In order to tell you what I believe, I must bring up something from my personal history.

The turning point of my life was my decision to give up my business job and study music. My parents, although sharing my love of music, didn't think it was a good choice that I took up music as a job. Considering my family background, this was understandable. My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years at Spring Hill College in Mobile, and though he was much loved by his students, he didn't earn(挣钱)enough to provide for his large family. As a result of this example in the family, my parents strongly asked me to go to the college instead of a conservatory(音乐学院) of music although I loved my violin and spent most of my spare time practicing.

Before my graduation from Columbia, the family ran into some money problems and I felt it was my duty to leave college and take a job. That was why I took a business job, which I always think of as the wasted years. I went into it for money, for being able to help the family. Money is all I go out of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by.

My wish was to save enough to quit(退出)and then go to Europe to study music. I continued to make money, and finally, bit by bit, I earned enough to make myself able to go abroad. The family got out of the trouble and ▲ . I felt like a free man and sailed for Europe. I stayed for four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working and enjoyed every minute of it.

"Enjoyed" is too soft a word. I walked on air. I really lived. When I broke away from business, it was against the advice of all my friends and family, but if I had stayed in business, I do not believe I would have made a success of living.

(1)The writer presented his grandpa's example in order to .

A. show how much his grandpa was loved by his students

B. tell to be a musician wasn't a good choice for the writer

C. explain why his parents disagreed him to take up music as a job

D. thank his parents' support for studying in the conservatory of music

(2)How did the writer feel when he was taking his business job?

A. Successful.

B. Shameful.

C. Hopeful.

D. Painful.

(3)Which of the following can best fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?

A. my point was that business was not for me.

B. my help was no longer necessary.

C. I earned so much to support my family.

D. I got up early to practice the violin.

(4)From the underlined sentence "I walked on air", it can be inferred that the writer .

A. couldn't find his place in a new environment

B. couldn't make a success of living

C. felt free because he was doing what he loved

D. felt pity for beginning a new life

【答案】(1)C

(2)D

(3)B

(4)C

My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years at Spring Hill College in Mobile, and though he was much loved by his students, he didn't earn(挣钱) enough to provide for his large family.

That was why I took a business job, which I always think of as the wasted years.

The family got out of the trouble

I felt like a free man and sailed for Europe. I stayed for four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working and enjoyed every minute of it.

One day I got in a taxi, and we left for the airport. We were driving in the right lane(车道)when, suddenly, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. I was frightened. But then I couldn't believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head and started yelling at us. I couldn't believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This

guy almost sent us to hospital.”

This is when my taxi driver taught my what I now call, “The Law of the Rubbush Truck(垃圾车法则).” He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger and full of bad feelings. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they'll throw it at you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.

Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love those who love you and pray(祈祷)for those who don't.

A. The writer went to the airport by taxi that day.

Science fiction is a popular kind of writing, and many people think of Jules Verne(凡尔纳) as the father of science fiction. He was born in France in 1828. His father wanted him to become a lawyer, but from his early 20s Verne decided to become a writer. At first he wrote plays for the theater. Then, in 1863, he wrote a story called Five Weeks in a Balloon. The success of this book encouraged him to write more stories such as A Journey to the Center of the Earth(1864) and From the Earth to the Moon(1865). In the 19th century, many people were interested in science and inventions. Jules Verne wrote about scientific subjects in his stories and, as a result, they were very popular. That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter (笑声)Clubs around the world and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. "Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day," says Dr. Kataria. "Everyone is naturally good at laughing-it's the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives." There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over l,300 in the world. Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%. So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha.” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it worked! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed-and comfortable I felt. So if you're under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results! (1)The first Laughter Club was started in __________. A. India B. America C. Britain D.
