Encourage Children to Think

Creativity is the key to a brighter future, say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children.

If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have a new type of tape that we now think important. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he developed a kind of material which was strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company, the Minnesota Mining Company, learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking and developing new ideas.

Creativity is not something one is born with, nor is it a sign of high intelligence. Just because a person who is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources(资源)one has to produce new ideas that are good for something.

Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage children's creativity. With strong attention to tests and the development of reading, writing and math skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can’t recognize ways to use it in new situations. They may know the rules correctly, but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems.

It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it’s choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money, but not help them too much if they make the wrong decision. The child may have a hard time, but that is all right. This is because the most important character(性格特征)of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.

46. What did the company where Dick Drew work learn from its mistake?

A. They encouraged people to work a longer time.

B. They discouraged people to think freely.

C. They asked people to spend all their work time developing new ideas.

D. They encouraged people to spend some of their work time considering new ideas.

A. that people are born with

B. that depends on intelligence

C. that is a way of using what one has learnt to work out new problems

A. They don’t understand the importance of education.

B. They pay too much attention to exams and language skills.

C. They don’t want their students to make mistakes.

D. They think it more important to remember some information.

49. What should the parents do when their children decide how to spend their money?

A. Help them if their decision is wrong, but not too much

B. Take no notice of whatever they do

C. Try to help them as much as possible

D. Leave them as they are

50. What is the purpose of Paragraph1 in the whole passage?

A. To introduce the topic

London Underground

The world’s first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate(重新定位)their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(减轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.

The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays (推迟), but the fast railway was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground rail which was 6 kilometers long. About 30,000 people got on the subway on the first day. Riders enjoyed comfortable seats and pleasant decorations(装饰) inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine(引擎) soon filled the air in the tunnels(隧道) with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. Interesting Foreign Languages

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car, before they left, they asked me about how to find accommodations(住所).I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodations gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.

“We didn't stay at bed and breakfast houses,”they said.“Because we found that most families were away on holiday.”

I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays” because Spanish word for “holiday” is “VACANCIES”.So they did not go to houses where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”,which in English meant there are free rooms. Then my friends went to houses where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”,because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full.As a result, they stayed at hotels!

We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish,a wor d that is very similar to “DIVERSION” means fun.So when my friends saw the

word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun.In English, however, it means that the workman is repairing the road, and that you must take a different road.

English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages.Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee,I said “Thank you” in French.I meant that I would like one more cup of coffee. However,to my surprise, the coffee pot was taken away!Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No,thank you”.

63. “No vacancies” in English means ____.

A.no free rooms B.free rooms

64. If you see an English road sign that says “Diversion”,you will ____

A.fall into a hole

The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some change. "I have $2.50" he said. "May I please look at them?" The store owner smiled and whistled, taking out five dogs. One puppy was left behind, immediately the little boy singled it out and said, "What's wrong with that little dog?" The store owner explained that the little puppy was disabled. It would always be lame. The little boy became excited. "That is the little puppy that I want to buy." The store owner said "No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just give him to you.” The little boy got quite upset, looked into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger, and said, "I don't want you to give him to me. That dog is worth eveny bit as much as all the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $2.50 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for." On hearing this, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace.
