How long will it be before you find yourself famous?

“IN the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” US artist Andy Warhol made this famous statement in 1968. Back then, the only really famous people were pop stars and actors, political figures and war heroes – although things were changing. In just 30 years, his statement seems to have come true.

Today there are countless individuals that go in and out of the media spotlight. The most common way that ordinary people today become famous is through reality shows. Both American Idol and Hunan TV’s Super Girls have produced quite a few instant stars.

The most famous person of this type is Scottish singer Susan Boyle, an out-of-work, plain-looking 48-year-old who came to international attention when she appeared on the reality TV program Britain’s Got Talent in April 2009.

However, Boyle’s success was largely due to a video posted on YouTube. According to the BBC, the video had been viewed “a whopping (庞大的) 120 million times worldwide” by the end of 2009.

Indeed, today many people showcase their own videos on YouTube and other sites. “This model makes it easy for an average Joe (路人) to get noticed,” writes Jonita Davis for the Associated Content.

But 15 minutes is a very short time; most of these instant celebrities fade from view. If others show true talent or staying power, they may be awarded extra time to prove themselves worthy of media and public attention.

But while Warhol emphasized the short-lived nature of modern fame, he also pointed out that fame is easier to get nowadays. If digital video cameras enable people to become reporters, why shouldn’t they also become celebrities?

Helping out

MORE and more migrant workers (外来务工者) are looking for jobs in cities. This has created a problem: the large number of children that are left behind.

This winter break, my friends and I visited such a stay-at-home kid.

Huang Taizhong is a Junior 2 student at Chengdu No 7 Middle School. His parents got divorced (离婚的) and both moved away to work in other cities. Huang lives with his old grandparents in an apartment with only old furniture.

Huang was shy at first but became talkative when we helped him with his math and English.

At the end of our talk, I gave him many books that were too expensive for his family to afford He just smiled and said: “I really appreciate your help. Don’t worry, and I will study hard!”

His words moved me. I hope that our visit brought him joy and helped him face up to the challenges of his life and studies.

------Don't tell Jim about it. Otherwise it would make waves at work.

You can have it all

HERE’S $3 million (20 million yuan) in cash. OK, so it’s Monopoly (大富翁游戏) money. But never mind –go on, take it. You can use it to buy Chang’an Avenue in Beijing, or any other street in any other city on Google Maps.

That’s right. The online map is now one big Monopoly game board. The new worldwide (全球的) online Monopoly game, called Monopoly City Streets, started last month. So many people tried to play that the website went down.

“We expected an opening rush when we launched (推出) the Monopoly City Streets online game, but the first few hours are beyond even our greatest expectations (预期),” a post on the game’s website read.

Monopoly City Streets allows users to buy up streets in cities around the world, from New York to London to Beijing. Players can also build all kinds of different buildings on their street. They can also create danger on other people’s streets. The idea is to beat your friends and the world to become the richest property (财产) owner.

Monopoly first became popular in the hard economic times of the 1930s, and the new game appears in another hard period – the present financial crisis As The Christian Science Monitor points out, people like to pretend they can make money in times when they have so little of it in the real world. But you’d better hurry if you want to play the game. People are buying up streets fast, and the game will end in January 2010.

How to start

The first step is to go to the website (https://www.doczj.com/doc/9911791087.html,/game.html). When you get there, find a street you want to buy on the map. Then click (点击) on it and click “buy” on the deed (契约). Streets that are purple (紫色的) are owned by the bank and can be bought. Streets that are blue are owned by other players and may be for sale. You ow n streets that are red. When you click “buy” on the deed it will have you set up a Monopoly City Streets account with 3 million Monopoly dollars.

Ban these ads?

YES

Embedded (植入的) ads are acceptable.

Mao Weiying: I think it’s reasonable for advertisements to appear in films and TV shows. It is an important way for the makers to earn money, which supports their investment (投资), and thus produces more good work.

Shi Xingjian: Adverts that break up a program or film are frustrating for the audience. Embedded advertising is better, since the program is not interrupted. It’s more natural.

Ye Xueni: We watch teleplays (电视剧) from beginning to end. Embedded advertisements don’t affect this, as commercial breaks (广告时间) do. And they do make profits for business. Why not just turn a blind eye to them? NO

Embedded advertisements are annoying (烦人的).

Wu Luxue: Even if a film or a TV program is good, an embedded advertisement can spoil it. Even worse, some of the ads are not a natural fit for the show. There is nothing in the world more annoying than ads.

Wang Xubo:I don’t believe there should be ads in films and TV plays. They are an insult (侮辱) to the art and they kill interest in the program.

Han Danyang: We know why businesses pay to embed ads in programs; for the same reason the producers make them in the first place –money. Audiences, however, do not watch TV shows and movies for a commercial reason.

Head to New York...

MANY people think of New York City as an international center for eating. Top chefs (厨师) from around the world set up restaurants there. They hope to find success in a city where people love to eat well and are willing to spend good money to do it.

New York is also the perfect city for street food: inexpensive take-away food sold out of carts (手推车) on the streets and sidewalks (人行道) of the city. New York City is home to people from all over the world, who have brought their language, culture, and food with them. A diverse (多种多样的) population means that there will be plenty of food to taste from all over the globe.

Street food is attractive (吸引人的) to New Yorkers for many reasons. There are so many different flavors (风味) and styles, all just steps away. The meals are inexpensive. And in a place full of busy, rushing people, it takes only minutes to get a meal.

Street food is the talk of the town after the fifth yearly Vendy Award contest, in September. The Vendy Awards give awards for the best street food vendor (商贩), the most popular carts, and the best new vendor of the year. According to celebrity chef Mario Batali, the Vendys are “the Oscars Academy Awards of food for the real New York.” This year, flavorful (美味的) Mexican food of the Country Boys taco truck (专卖墨西哥玉米面卷饼的餐车) won the top award.

If you're looking for the best food in New York, step outside the restaurants –the perfect meal may be waiting on the street.

Here's how Dad and I bonded

MY father and I did not talk very often. When he got home from work I was always concentrating (专注于) on my homework. I said “Hi” without looking up at him. Sometimes it was the only communication between us.

This winter vacation, I went to Guangzhou to visit my aunt. My father stayed alone at home since he did not have time off. I often thought of him as the night fell. One evening, to find out if he was all right, I sent him a text message.

To my surprise, he replied immediately. “I’m great. Thanks for your concern. How are you doing, sweetie?”

I was astonished (惊讶的) because I didn’t know he could send messages that fast and I didn’t expect that he would call me “sweetie”.

After that, we shared our daily news every day via text messages, over the whole holiday. It made me feel great. It was as my dad said afterwards, “It is really good to know that someone you love does care about you.”

Thanks to the vacation, the generation gap (代沟) between us faded away (减退). It’s so important that we let our loved ones know how we feel.

Chase after

STILL on their world tour, members of the Taiwan pop trio (三人组) S.H.E. released their new album Shero on March 26. The three girls – Selina, Hebe and Ella – sing about romance, friendship and work.

The title song Shero was written by Mayday’s lead singer, Ashin. The group claims to hope to inspire (激励) women to chase after their ambitions. The CD also contradicts the rumor that the group will split up.

意为“追逐、追赶” (try very hard to get sth)。例如:He’s been chasing after the world record all season.

This is Pato...

FROM Ronaldo and Ronaldinho to Kaka and Robinho, Brazil is never short of football stars. If you have ever wondered who could be the next big name, 20-year-old Alexandre Pato is a player to watch. Pato showed his talent in a Champions League (冠军联赛) match against Spanish giants Real Madrid on October 22. His second goal gave AC Milan victory in a 3-2 thriller at the Bernabeu football ground. Before the match, Kaka, who left Milan to join Madrid over the summer, was the center of all the attention. But it was Pato who stole the show.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pato explained his thoughts in the instant before he took his decisive (决定性的) kick: “I said to myself: you must hit the net! And I did it. I want to make football hist ory and the two goals against Real Madrid are just the beginning of this story,” he said.

Pato started to play indoor football at the age of three. In fact, he had already become part of history at 17 when he scored a goal in the FIFA World Club Cup tournament – he was the youngest scorer in the history of FIFA competition.

Pato has good control and moves intelligently (聪明地). Most of all, he is quick. It''s clear why many people have linked him to a young Ronaldo. Yet Pato says that the praise does not give him pressure. Instead, he welcomes it.

“I was happy to listen to people saying I was a great player. It makes me want to do my best.”

Now, the question remains: with Ronaldinho, Kaka and Pato, which team will be able to stop Brazil on their road to the next World Cup title?

Nudes are making the news

THIS week, it’s nudes (裸体) in the news.

By the time the Spanish airline Air Comet went bankrupt (破产) last winter, some of its workers hadn’t been paid in over nine months. Now former Air Comet flight attendants (乘务员) are demanding (索要) their wages (工资) in a very public way.

Nine of the young women took off their clothes recently to pose (摆姿势) nude for a calendar. A spokesperson for the women said that the flight attendants contributed (贡献) to th e calendar in order to “continue to publicize their situation and demand a solution”.

The flight attendants took off their clothes to make an important statement, but what was Daniel R. Lee’s excuse?

The 22-year-old man was caught by police after running through a supermarket in Tennessee, US, wearing nothing more than a face mask (面具). When questioned, he told the police that he made his naked shopping trip because he was “bored and didn’t have anything else to do”.

Police officers found the young man in the bathroom of a nearby fast food restaurant. Employees said that he had run into the restaurant and asked if someone could lend him clothes. One kind worker gave him a pair of shorts.

I Have a Dream

I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of the day and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal”. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content their character.

I have a dream today.

Jane Eyre (excerpt)

“No. You must stay! I swear it —and the oath shall be kept”.

“I tell you I must go!” I retorted, roused to something like passion.

“Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you? Do you think I am an automat ion? —a machine without feeling? And can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!—I have as much soul as you, —and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh—it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal—as we are!”

Where There Is Life, There Is Music

If you ask me what is the most important thing in my life, I will say music without hesitation. I have liked music from my childhood. My father often says when I was a baby I would never go to sleep without soft, beautiful music. Now music is a part of my life. When I feel tired, disappointed, or in low spirits, I usually turn to music. Music, nothing but music, can have so wonderful an effect on my heart and feelings.

Not only me, but also many high school students like popular music. They listen to music before class, after class, and even at lunch.

It’s hard to imagine life without music. In fact, music is an important part of many p eople’s everyday life.

Music comes with us. Where there is life, there is music. Where there is music, there is hope. You can hear music wherever you may go. A man who doesn’t know music will lose half the world. A world without music would be a dull and dead one.

So dear friends, let’s open our arms and embrace music and enjoy it throughout our lives. Love music and love life.

Yesterday Once More (song) When I was young, I’d listen to the radio, waiting for my favorite songs. When they played I would sing along. It made me smile.

Those were such happy times, and not so long ago.

How I wondered where they’d gone.

But they are back again, just like a long-lost friend, all the songs I love so well.

Every sha-la-la-la, every wo-wo still shines.

Every shing-a-ling -a-ling, that they’re starting to sing, so fine.

When they get to the part where he’s breaking her heart,

It can really make me cry, just like before, it’s yesterday once more.

Looking back on how it was in years gone by, and the good time that I had, makes today seem rather sad; so much has changed.

It was songs of love that I would sing to them, and I’d memori ze each word. Those old melodies still sound so good to me, as they melt the years away.

Every sha-la-la-la, every wo-wo still shines.

Every shing-a-ling -a-ling, that they’re starting to sing, so fine.

All my best memories come back clearly to me; some can even make me cry. Just like before, it’s yesterday once more.

Opportunity

The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.

Opportunity is the same way. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet opportunity alone is not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to get in on a ground floor opportunity, as if the opportunity will do all the work. That’s impossible.

Just as you need air to breathe, you need opportunity to succeed. It takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity, however. You must make use o f that opportunity. That’s not up to the opportunity. That’s u p to you. It doesn’t matter what floor the opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it.

We need good manners

Do you remember the time when people were a litter nicer and gentler with each other? I certainly do. And I feel that much of the world has somehow gotten away from that. Too often I see people rushing into elevators without giving those inside a chance to get out first, or never saying “Thank you” when others hold the door open for them. We get lazy. And in our laziness, we think that something, like a simple “Thank You” doesn’t really matter. But it can matter very much. The fact is that no matter how nicely we dress, or how beautifully we decorate our homes, we can’t be truly elegant unless we have good manners because elegance and good manners go always hand in hand. In fact, I think of the good manners as a sort of hidden beauty secret. Haven’t you noticed that the kindest, most generous people seem to keep getting prettier? It’s funny how that happens. But it does. Take the long-lost art of saying “Thank you” like wearing a little makeup or making sure your hair is neat. Getting into the habit of saying “Thank you” can make you feel better about yourself. Good manners add to your image while an angry face makes the best dressed person look ugly.

2. elegant adj.

3. makeup n.

Yesterday (song)

yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away

now it looks as though they’re here to stay

oh, I believe in yesterday.

suddenly, I’m not half the man I used to be,

there’s a shadow hanging over me.

oh, yesterday came suddenly.

why she had to go I don’t know she wouldn’t say.

I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.

now I need a place to hide away.

oh, I believe in yesterday.

why she had to go I don’t know she wouldn’t say.

I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.

now I need a place to hide away.

oh, I believe in yesterday.

Hard Work Is Good for Health

Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy, away from loneliness and solitude. Researches show that people feel unhappy, worried and solitary when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work, people come into contact with each other. By collective activity, they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man spiritually and makes him liable to disease.

Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment and a sense of achievement. Work makes one feel his value and status in society. When a writer finishes his writing or doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.

From the above we can come to the conclusion that the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study well and live a happy and healthy life.

April Fool’s Day

The fir st of April is commonly known as April Fool’s Day, and it is customarily on this day to play a trick on a friend. If your friend falls into the trap, then he or she is an April Fool.

It isn’t only children that like such jokes. Grownups like such pranks, too.

Even the media occasionally try to deceive the public with a clever April Fool story. Some years ago, for example, a famous joke was played on the radio. A scientific correspondent reported that strange geological changes had resulted in weaker gravity in different parts of Britain. He asked listeners to jump up and down and see if they could jump higher than they normally could. Many people did. The hundreds of calls the BBC received proved how successful the hoax was. Not until twelve o’clock did the BBC gently remind its listeners it was April Fool’s Day that day.

Making jokes only lasts until the noon of the day, the rule is rigid and everywhere acknowledged. Anyone who tries to make a fool after midday is a bigger fool than he who has been fooled. The late trickster is instantly rebuffed, as a piece of poem goes:

April Fool’s gone and past.

You’re the biggest fool at last.

When April Fool’s Day comes again,

You’ll be the biggest fool then.

The Rainy Day

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;

It rains, and the wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the moldering wall,

But at every gust the dead leaves fall,

And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold and dark and dreary;

It rains and the wind is never weary;

My thoughts still cling to the moldering past,

But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! And cease repining;

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

Thy fate is the common fate of all,

Into each life some rain must fall,

Some days must be dark and dreary.

(19)Under Southern Skies (song)

There is a peace in our hearts

And a hope in our hands

We’re a family of children

We come from many different lands

Our time is just beginning,

Our race is yet to run,

But if you would take us with you

Then we have already won

Under the southern skies

Together in this land

Every voice in celebration

A family hand in hand under the southern skies

As one we rise

And turn our eyes to see

All the wonder of the future in a world of harmony There’s a great spirit rising

From the desert to the sea

As it sweeps across the southern land

It comes to you and me Where the dreamers are the dreaming,

Where the race of the edge yet to come,

Every child can be a hero

If our world could live as one

Under the southern skies

Together in this land

Every voice in celebration

A family hand in hand under the southern skies As one we rise

And turn our eyes to see

All the wonder of the future in a world of harmony

How long will it be before you find yourself famous? 眼球经济时代,速成“明星”究竟能红多久 “IN the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” US artist Andy Warhol made this famous statement in 1968. Back then, the only really famous people were pop stars and actors, political figures and war heroes – although things were changing. In just 30 years, his statement seems to have come true. Today there are countless individuals that go in and out of the media spotlight. The most common way that ordinary people today become famous is through reality shows. Both American Idol and Hunan TV’s have produced quite a few instant stars. According to the BBC, the video 庞大的) 120 million times worldwide” by the end of 2009. had been viewed “a whopping ( Indeed, today many people showcase their own videos on YouTube and other sites. “This model m Davis for the Associated Content. easy for an average Joe (路人) to get noticed,” writes Jonita But 15 minutes is a very short time; most of these instant celebrities fade from view.

Youth Youth is not a time of life; it's a state of mind; it's not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it's a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it's the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for the adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than of grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear ,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust. Whether 60 or 16 ,there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and

如一进课堂老师说:“It’s nice to see you again./It’s fine today, isn’t?/How are you today?”星期一上课问:“Did you have a good time in the weekend?”

The road to success It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their business lives sweeping out of the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself. Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly start ed, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “my place is at the top”. Be king in your dreams. And there is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on the line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it. The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here, there, and everywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry too many baskets that break most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration.
