Do you want to improve your physics and chemistry grades? Well, maybe you should first learn something about the struggles (奋斗) of great scientists.

The American Psychological Association did an interesting study. More than 400 students from schools in New York City took part in it. The students were divided into three groups. Group 1 read a typical textbook that describes the achievements of great scientists. Group 2 read about those scientists' personal struggles. For example, as a Jew, Einstein (爱因斯坦) ran away from Nazi Germany to avoid persecution (迫害). The last group read about the scientists' intellectual struggles, such as Marie Curie's failed scientific tests. These stories about struggles also told students how the scientists dealt with these obstacles(障碍) .

The students took a science exam before the study. After the six—week study, they took another. Scientists found those in Groups 2 and 3 improved their science grades. Students in Group 1 didn't see a grade increase. Some of them even had lower grades after the study.

The study was led by Xiaodong Lin—Siegler, a teacher at Columbia University. According to Xiaodong, kids often think Einstein was truly intelligent. They believe they will never match him. Many of them fail to realize that any success requires a long journey. Along the way, there are many failures(失败) .

Students who read the struggle stories more probably said that great scientists were like themselves. The "great minds" also had to overcome obstacles to achieve success.

Xiaodong says today's science textbooks fail to bring science to life. As a result, students seldom regard science as part of their everyday lives. Instead, they just see a long list of facts that they have to remember. Xiaodong thinks textbooks should include more stories about how great scientists had to struggle to succeed. And students should focus more on how these scientists dealt with the obstacles they met along the way.

A. reading the achievements of great scientists more carefully

C. learning about how great scientists dealt with their obstacles

Andy Hunt

Class 2, Grade 9

2018.4—9 86

2018—5—22 79

(4)In Paragraph Four, the word "match" means "___________ " in Chinese.

In Canada and the United States, there is a new group of children called "satellite kids", who live in one place but whose parents live in another place.

Asians are immigrating (移居) to Canada and the United States in larger numbers than ever before. Most Asians immigrate because they believe that they can give their children a better education in the west. In Asia, especially in China, Japan and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave their countries so that their children can go to university.

The problem is that when Asians arrive, they discover that finding a job and making money are more difficult in the west. So these children become "satellite kids", and most of their parents do not know how sad it is to be a "satellite kid".

Only until now are Canadians and Americans discovering the "satellite kids" problem. Because these children do not speak English and because their parents are not there to take care of them, they are often absent from school. A few months ago we started a blog at https://www.doczj.com/doc/9210237399.html, called Confessions(自白) of an English Learner. This blog is for you to share your stories about language misunderstandings, and to laugh, cry and sympathize(同情) with other people's stories.

Adam from Taiwan wrote that he was taking a tour with his son in Hawaii. His son had gone to the restroom. The tour guide asked where the boy was, and Adam answered, "He is in the toilet." In other countries, that answer might have made perfect sense. But in the United States, most people would say "He's in the restroom." or "He's in the bathroom." To Americans, a "toilet" is what you find in a restroom instead of the name for the room itself. So you can see why saying "in the toilet" might have sounded funny.

Michele from France had a funny and maybe somewhat painful story to tell. She was visiting London and the weather was very cold and rainy. She went into an Indian restaurant and ordered a meal. The waiter asked if she wanted it "hot". She was surprised by the question and said, "Yes, very, very hot." Michele said after she took her first bite she realized her misunderstanding. The food was very, very spicy(辣的).So be careful the next time someone asks if you want your food "hot". It can also refer to(指) the flavor(味道).

(1)On Confessions of an English learner, you should tell .

A. stories about the best ways you improve your English

B. stories about mistakes you made in learning English

C. experience you've got in English-speaking countries

D. stories about your trip in English-speaking countries

(2)When the waiter asked Michele questions about "hot", she thought the waiter referred to .

A. the weather

B. the temperature

C. the flavor

D. the room (3)The writer wrote the passage by .

A. giving examples

B. giving suggestions

C. listing some points

D. asking questions

【答案】(1)B

(2)B

(3)A

【解析】【分析】文章大意:主要写的是一个英语学习者的自白所犯的语言错误的事。(1)细节题。根据This blog is for you to share your stories about language misunderstandings

可知,这个博客是为了分享所犯的语言错误,所以在这个博客上,你会说所犯的错误,故选B。

Not long ago, my daughter's shoes were scratched(划损)by someone's knife. I took the shoes to the shoemaker to get them repaired. He looked at them and said to me, "If you trust me, I will add more scratches on both of the shoes."

I was surprised and asked why. He explained," As if the openings were made on purpose for a special style". I didn't fully understand him, but I decided to leave the shoes there.

Two days later I dropped by from work to fetch the shoes. At the first sight I found there were indeed five or six more scratches on each shoe, but all the openings were patched(打补丁)by red soft leather(皮革). They looked special. I couldn't help making compliments(赞扬) on the shoemaker's skills.

Another time, there was a large opening on the back of my wife's sister's white coat. My wife took it over, checked carefully, and then said," Let me take it home and mend it."

Three days later, seeing the coat again, I was shocked: the big opening was taken place by a beautiful flower and it took on a wonderful look. I gave my praise," It's just as beautiful as a piece of art!"

Perfection is impossible to achieve in everything, and so is human's life, which will appear in the form of injury, disability or disease. Since you can't change a wound(伤口), you should not expect people's pity by exposingthe wound, which shows nothing meaningful. All you can do and have to do is to make up the wound by patches and try your best to grow the most beautiful flower on the wound, and that is the meaning of life.

(1)How did the writer feel about the shoemaker's work?

A. Satisfied.

B. Moved.

C. Magic.

D. Angry.

(2)The word "exposing" in the last paragraph is the closest in meaning to " ".

A. appearing

B. showing

C. seeing

A. the shoemaker didn't know how to make shoes

B. the shoemaker fooled the writer on purpose

C. the writer's wife was good at mending coats

D. patches are common in our clothes

(4)Which is the best title for this passage?

A. A Wonderful Wife.

B. The Scratches Shoes.

C. A Kind of Perfection.

D. The Patches of Life.

【答案】(1)A

(2)B

(3)推理判断题,根基文章第五和第六段的描述,可推断出作者的妻子很擅长缝补衣服,故选C。

Lots of people are afraid of speaking in public. According to a study, there are 3 of every 4 people having such a problem. The conclusion is a bit surprising and worrying, as most jobs require some speaking ability. The following will help you to make a speech better.

Write note cards. Write main ideas on your cards. You needn't write details. Just put in some fun facts, questions, and other activities on the cards to share with the class. You needn't look at your cards for a long time while speaking. Only have a quick look at the card for information instead of reading every last word if necessary.

Smile at your class. When it's time to speak, a good old-fashioned smile is the best to draw your class into your speech. Be happy, because you're about to teach your class something they don't know before. Studies have shown that smiles are infectious. That means once you smile, it's hard for everyone else not to smile. So if you want your speech to go off well, smile. That will make everyone smile and maybe those smiles will make you actually smile.

Make eyes contact. It's so boring to listen to a speaker who looks at the floor or at note cards. Relax. Your class is made up of your friends and you talk to them all the time. Talk the same way now. Have a look at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like

you're communicating with them. Also, you'll look like you know what you are talking about.

Use hand motions. Move you hand along as you talk, using them to express your key points and keep the class interested. It will also lead your nervous energy into a better place.

Except for a few times, Americans are not big present-givers. There's no exchange of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that

he wants to bribe(贿赂) him. Americans have learned that in some other countries people like to give presents to others, but among ourselves we don't see the need for presents.

Even friends may never exchange presents. When I go to foreign countries, I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I didn't. I don't often remember a friend's birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine. If someone gave me presents too often, I'd get unpleasant. But a present from a foreigner-that kind from his or her homeland-won't go wrong, except to government employees(政府职员) who can't be given presents.

You usually open a present at once and in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday presents. You should only say, "It's so nice. Thanks…" when you get Christmas or birthday presents.

You may want to bring a bottle of wine(葡萄酒) or flowers to a dinner party, but you're never asked to. Nobody will mind if you bring wine, but your friend may not use it that evening.

At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes our friends. We also give presents to people who have been helpful during the year—doormen, babysitters, housecleaners, newspaper senders—anyone who has often helped us.

(1)What kind of presents don't Americans usually open in front of the givers?

A. The small presents.

B. Christmas or birthday presents.

C. The expensive presents.

D. The presents for dinner party.

A. American business people don't want presents because they are rich enough.

B. The writer of this passage must be an American.

C. Everyone must give presents to one's family and friends at Christmas.

D. Government employees can get little presents from a foreigner.

(3)What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Present-giving in the United States.

B. Customs(习俗) in the United States.

C. American people and present-giving.

D. When and how to give presents.

Big data(数据) is lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer program. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites(社交媒体网站), companies and governments. One set of data can have people's names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.

Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need more help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.

Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he, she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.

How can big data be used for good and bad things? It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data. Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.

The "G" stands for the "generation" (代)of your mobile network. But the symbols will become things of the past after 5G networks fully arrive. On March 30, Shanghai vice-mayor Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a Huawei Mate X Smartphone. Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks. About 100 times faster than 4G networks, 5G will let people download and upload data(数据) faster than ever before. But 5G won't just bring faster mobile internet. People can use it for many other things as well. For example, 5G will help to make self-driving cars safer. Today's self-driving test cars have one problem-lag(延迟). When the car "sees" an obstacle(障碍物), it sends this information to a data center and receives instructions, However, it will be some time before it sends and receives this information. With this kind of lag, the cars might crash because they don't receive instructions in time. With 5G, this lag will be greatly lowered, making the cars safer. 5G could also be used to power the internet of things (IoT), that is, a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology. The IoT could be used in a lot of ways. For example, with IoT, your refrigerator could automatically (自动地) place an order online for eggs when it finds that there are no eggs left inside. (1)Which city was 5G tested for the first time? A. Beijing. B. Shanghai. C. Shenzhen. (2)What can we infer(推测) according to the passage?. A. 5G is widely used in China now. B. 5G networks will make our lives more convenient. C. A robot that can do housework. B. An online store where you can buy anything. C. A large online network that connects things and people. (5)Which sentence is right according to the passage?
