Unit 1

"Wu Wei is a born artist, " said his best friend. "He's quiet and doesn't like to talk much, but his work shouts!" Wu Wei, the young artist, has impressed the whole country with his creative work. His sculptures for Sunshine Town Square have won high praise from the art community. "I want to share the best art with people, so I’m always searching for something better or different. This in itself is great fun," he said.

Su Ning gave up her job as an accountant five years ago and started to work for the sales department in a big company. “ I’m active and energetic, and I love working with people. However, in my last job, I could only work with numbers day after day. That made me unhappy." Su Ning is now the general manager of the company. "Life is like a race. You either take the lead or fall behind. I'm ready to take on new challenges any time,” she said.

Liu Hao is the chief engineer of the high-speed railway connecting Sunshine Town to Tianjin. "To us, a miss is as good as a mile. We can't afford to make any mistakes, " said Mr Liu. " All of us know that it's necessary to pay attention to every detail. " "He's serious and well organized, "one of his team members said. " He always works to high standards, but he's modest and easy to work with." Fang Yuan, head of Sunshine Hospital and a pioneer heart surgeon, is kind and patient. "As a doctor, you can't be too careful," she said. "Carelessness will be a disaster not only to ourselves but also to patients." "She's always willing to work extra hours, said another doctor. In fact, Doctor Fang often does operations for about ten hours a day. She has devoted most of her time to her work. All the people in the town respect her.

Unit 2

Colours and moods

Some people believe that colours can influence our moods. You may wonder whether it is true. In fact, colours can change our moods and make us feel happy or sad, energetic or sleepy. This article explains what colours can do and what characteristics they represent.

Calm colours Have you ever walked into a room and felt relaxed ? It could be because the walls were painted blue. Blue is a calm colour. It brings peace to our mind and body. Blue can also represent sadness, so you may say “I’m feeling blue” when you are feeling sad. White is another calm colour. It is also the colour of purity. Many women like to wear white on their wedding day. Warm colours Some colours , such as orange and yellow, can make you feel warm. People in cold areas prefer warm colours in their homes to create a warm and comfortable feeling. Orange represents joy. It can cheer you up when you are feeling sad. Yellow is the colour of the sun, so it can remind you of a warm and sunny day. Yellow is also the colour of wisdom. Some people prefer this colour when they hope for success.

Energetic colours When you feel tired or weak, you should wear energetic colours like green. Green can give you energy, as it is the colour of nature and represents new life. However, it is also the colour of envy, so we may say someone is “green with envy”.

Strong colours If you require strength in either body or mind, red may be of some help to you. Red is the colour of heat. It represents power and strong feelings. Wearing red can also make it easier to take action. This may help when you are having difficulty making a decision.

Unit4 I used to be afraid of the dark A_3a From Shy Girl to Pop Star For this month’s Young World magazine, I interviewed 19-year-old Asian pop star Candy Wang. Candy told me that sheused to be really shy and took up singing to deal with her shyness. As she got better, she dared to sing in front of her class, and then for the whole school. Now she’s not shy anymore and lovessinging in front of crowds. I asked Candy how life was different after she became famous. She explained that there are many good things, like being able to travel andmeetne w people all the time. “I didn’t use to be popular in school, but now I get tons of attention everywhere I go.” However, too much attention can also be a bad thing. “I always have to worry about how I appear to others and I have to be very careful about what I say or do.And I don’t have much private time anymore.Hanging out with friends is almost impossible for me now because there are always guards around me.” What does Candy have to say to all those young peoplewhowant to become famous? “Well,” she b egins slowly, “you have to be prepared to give up your normal life. You can never imagine howdifficultthe road to success is. Many times I thought about giving up, but I fought on. You really require a lot of talent and hard work to succeed. Only a very small number of people make it to the top.”

Betty:Well, each of us reads a favourite book and writes a review for the discussion. Mr.Jackson:I see. We’re still influenced by Confucius ideas, and Shakespeare’s plays also make a lot of sense to us today.People have always read, and will always read great books.By the way, what do you think of Mark Twain, the Great American writer in the nineteenth century? Unit 1 A Unit 1 A A body language Debbie and Simon have looked up as an old lady entered their office. The lady looked at them both quickly, and then walked over to Debbie. Debbie greeted her cheerfully. Simon sighed and took some papers over to the fax machine. Chris, a senior member of staff, was standing there "What’s up, Simon? You don’t look very happy. " "Customers always prefer Debbie to me. I can’t understand it. " "I can. It’s the way you commun icate." "How can that be? " Simon said. "I don't even get a chance to speak to them." "Communicating is not just about speaking. Body language is important, too " "Body language?" "I mean your gestures and the expression on your face. Your whole appearance communicates things as well as your words." "The way you look at people doesn’t give them a good impression, Simon. You often rest your head on your hand. You look down. You never smile." "But look at Debbie. She holds her head up. She looks at pe ople’s eyes. She smiles before speaking to the. That’s why they go to her for help, and not you." After that, Simon tried to improve his body language. He sat up and smiled at people. This seemed to work. Minutes later, a beautiful girl entered. She looked at Debbie and then Simon. Without hesitating, she went to Simon and gave him a big smile. A few moments later, she left, still smiling. Chris came over at once and said, "Well done, Simon. You made a good impression on her." "That was my sister, " Simo n said.” She came to remind me that tomorrow is her birthday." B. Eye contact Throughout the history of mankind, people have communicated with body language. In many situations, the way you something is far more important than what you say Eye contact is sometimes the key to communication. It can signal friendliness or hostility, interest or boredom, and understanding or confusion In Western cultures, making eye contact in conversations is necessary. As a matter of fact, a westerner might consider a lack of eye contact as a lack of intertwine Spain, Italy and Greece,
