“ Congratulations, Mr. Jones, it’s a girl.”

Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and bring forth a different response from every man who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good fathers. Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.

Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is obvious that the shift from the role of husband to that of father is a difficult task. Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this resocialization process. Although numerous books have been written about American mothers, only recently has literature focused on the role of a father. It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father’s role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother’s role. The mother’s role seems to require a complete transformation in daily routine and highly innovative(革新的) adaptation, on the other hand, the father’s role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we mentioned the fact that growing numbers of women are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.

56. According to the author, being a father________.

B.excuses the American writers for ignoring the difficulties of being a father.

C.supports the idea that the chief role of a father is to earn money for the family.

https://www.doczj.com/doc/7f17103239.html,plains about the lack of social program to help husbands get used to the role of a

59. The transition to the mother’s role requires that the wife ____

A. change her life style in a highly innovative way

B. stay at home to take care of the baby

C. make a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situation.

B: Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War has existed for at least six

thousand years. It was always evil and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modern skill has changed this. Either man will end war, or war will end man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the greater danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeeded in stopping war, there would be no danger for us. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not by contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but this is what must be attempted.

Some people hold completely false attitudes towards how to prevent war. In fact, they are willing to go to war in support of them. However, the movement of world opinion during the past two years has changed very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course, very difficult problems remain in the international world, but the attitude towards them is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that agreements should be reached even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between East and West, but between Man and the atom bomb.

61. From the first paragraph we can know that ______.

D.Dangerous weapons are forbidden in modern society.

A.it is important for man to live without war.

B.the difference between East and West will lead to war

C.war must be stopped if man wants to survive.

63. The author believes that the only way to stop war is to ______

A. stop nuclear weapons

B. settle international problems through agreements

C.get rid of bacteriological and chemical weapons.

D: There is a new type of small advertisement becoming increasingly common in a newspaper classified columns. It is sometimes placed among “ situations vacant(招聘栏目)”, although it does not offer anyone a job, and sometimes it appears among “situations wanted”, although it is not placed by someone looking for a job, either. What it does is to offer help in applying for a job.

“Contact us before writing your application”, or “Make use of our long experience in preparing your resume or job history”, is how it is usually expressed. The growth and apparent success of such a specialized service is, of course, a reflection on the current high levels of unemployment. It is also an indication of the growing importance of the resume( or job history), with the suggestion that it may now qualify as an art form in its own right. There was a time when job seekers simply wrote letters of application. “Just put down your name, address, age and whether you have passed any exams” was about the average level of advice offered to young people applying for their first jobs when I left school. The letter was really just for openers, as was explained, and everything else could and should be saved for the interview. And in those days of full employment the technique worked. The

letter proved that you could write and were available for work. Your eager face and intelligent replies did the rest.

Later, as you moved up the ladder, something slightly more complicated was called for. The advice then was to put something in the letter which would distinguish you from the rest. It might be the aggressive approach. “Your search is over. I am the person you are looking for” was a widely used trick that occasionally succeeded. Or it might be some special feature specially designed for the job interview.

There is no doubt, however, that it is the increasing number of applicants with university education at all points(到处) that has led to the greater importance of the job history.

70. The new type of advertisement that is appearing in newspaper columns _____.

A.divides available jobs into various types.

https://www.doczj.com/doc/7f17103239.html,rms employers of the people available for work.

E: London----For many years John Randolph hesitated at whether to cycle to the workplace 10 miles away every day until July7, 2005, when London’s underground and buses got exploded.

“I shouldn’t have waited until there came the threat of bomb,”said the 32-year-old manager of a restaurant. He said he had lost 7 pounds and saved £185 bus fare since he began to use the bicycle.

London is quite different from Amsterdam and Copenhagen, where cycling to work is very common. It is only since the bombing event in which 52 lives were lost that London has rapidly been turning into an important cycling city. There are an increasing number of such cyclists as Randolph in London. They set up cycling clubs and websites, and call themselves “bomb dodgers(躲避炸弹者)”

So far there are no reliable data to show how many people in London using bicycles, but according to London Transportation Administration(LTA), the number of London cyclists may increase by 52%, based on the volume of bicycles crossing the Thames.

Despite this, there are only 2% of Londoners riding bicycles every day, sharply compared to 20% in Copenhagen, and 28% Amsterdam. The mayor of London Ken Livingstone, a cycling amateur too, hopes that the percentage of cyclists will have gone up to 80% by 2010. “Shuttling through London, cycling is the quickest, cheapest and most environmentally friendly way. More and more Londoners are beginning to use bicycles. In the past five years, the number has doubled while traffic accidents have fallen by 40%.”

According to London Cycling Campaign, Livingstone attempts to rebuild London into a capital of bicycles, in which case there will be much fewer traffic jams and pollution. There are now 273-mile-long cycle lanes, a half of which have been built since 2000. Its goal is to build 560-mile-long cycle lanes by 2010.

73.Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

A.London used to be a capital of bicycles.

B.Livingstone spent£7 on a bicycle and saved a bus fare£185.

C.There will be 287 more miles of cycle lanes to be built in five years.

A summary of the teaching work of senior three English teache rs 汇报人:JinTai College

People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: people with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more
