I was a shy girl. I didn’t even like to answer the telephone for fear I’d have to talk to somebody I didn’t know. I enjoyed the loneliness of exploring nature. However, at school I had to spend all day in the company of others. My escape was reading. I spent a lot of time studying and was rewarded with good grades. My only failure was Spanish -I’d get all As on my written work and tests, but Ds and Fs on the spoken part.

Eventually I went to college. During my third year of college, I had enough of being shy and determined to change my outlook and behavior. One day while at school, I noticed an advertisement for positions on the local classical music radio station. I had grown up listening to classical music, and I could easily pronounce names such as Tchaikovsky, Albinoni, and Chopin.

I had absolutely no background in radio, and absolutely no hope of getting the job. The idea of talking to thousands of listeners in “radio land” terrified me. However, I luckily survived the interview. I was given brief descriptions of symphonies(交响乐)and a public service announcement to read, and a list of composers’ names to pronounce. It wasn’t hard for me. I left the recording session(录音时段)with a sense of relief and a sense of accomplishment. About two weeks later I actually landed the job. It was a challenging job, but I grew to enjoy it greatly. I began to feel comfortable talking to people.

Although I now spend many hours each week talking with people, I’m still basically a quiet person. Perhaps it is my soft voice and my quiet nature that helps draw people out as they respond to my questions as I interview them. My former shyness is a fortune, as I can relate to people who feel discomfortable when they talk to newspaper reporters. I still enjoy moments of loneliness and th e peace found in nature. But I’m also glad I decided to make a change in my life that has opened many doors and opportunities that

I never knew existed.

24. What do we learn about the author?

A. She didn’t like reading.

B. She didn’t work hard enough.

C. She wasn’t interested in music.

D. She wasn’t good at speaking Spanish.

25. How did the author feel before the interview?

A. Very excited.

B. Pretty confident.

C. Highly confused.

D. Extremely nervous.

26. What does the author later think of her quiet personality?

A. It makes others feel less comfortable.

B. It is beneficial for

her challenging job.

C. It prevents her being a newspaper reporter.

D. It draws a negative response from audiences.

27. The text mainly focuses on the aut hor’s .

A. desire to find her true self

B. feeling about being a radio hostess

C. story of exploring the meaning of life

D. experience and feeling of overcoming shyness

C

Vinegar is great. It makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even clean your windows with it. And now, according to scientists, it may even help the planet ’s population to ease hunger.

Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan found that growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower.

The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis, a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate(醋酸盐) – the main component(成分) of vinegar.

After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants, before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this si mple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive.

Jong Myong Kim, co-author of the study, told Popular Science magazine that he’s already been in touch with people all over the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from flower growing companies to amateur gardeners. Although at this point keeping thirsty plants alive isn’t as easy as just pouring vinegar over them, Kim said he and his team are working on making the process as simple as possible. “Now we are trying to cooperate with some farmers, and also some companies, to make a method to apply this system.” he said.

And for those of us who always forget to ask our neighbors to water our plants when we go away, hopefully this means the end of returning home from

a trip to find our favorite flowers have died.

28. What is mentioned as a feature of the Arabidopsis?

A. It produces acetate in wet conditions.

B. It is mainly composed of acetate.

C. It can survive in nowhere but desert.

D. It can be tolerant of drought.

29. The scientists experimented further in order to ______.

A. find a simple way of keeping the crops of farmers alive

B. add acetate to the soils of other plants to stop watering

C. check the effectiveness of the acetate to resist drought

D. treat the dried-up plants by adding acetate to them

30. What is the author’s attitude to the discovery?

A. Objective

B. Unsupportive

C. Indifferent

D. Optimistic

31. What may be the best title for the text?

A. Vinegar could end hunger

B. Vinegar keeps plants living forever

C. How to survive climate change

D. Advantages and functions of vinegar

It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth(收费站). “I'm paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,” she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth w ere informed, “Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”

It turned out that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice random(随意的) kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she c opied it down.

Judy Foreman noticed the same phrase on a warehouse(仓库) wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters, “like a message from above.” Her husband, Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting that though she liked it, she didn't know where it came from or what it really meant.

Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days.

“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly.” Her fantasies(想象) include painting the classrooms of old schools, leaving hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor

part of town, and giving money secretly to a proud old lady. Anne says, “Kindness can build on itself as much as violence can.”

The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found your fare paid, who knows what you might have been inspired to do for someone else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be yours!

35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

As the saying goes, a picture is worth one thousand words.

Dear Simon,

It's overwhelmingly awesome that you have a high aim for yourself and you know what has prevented you from achieving high scores in exams. But you should remember that even the very best student can make mistakes sometimes. So don't put too much pressure on yourself.

As far as I am concerned, learning from your mistakes in past exams is a quick way to stop making the same mistakes next time. To begin with, if there are questions that can't be solved by yourself, you should turn to your teachers or classmates for help. What's more, during the exams you'd better make a good plan to distribute your time according to the questions. Besides, try to leave a few minutes at the end to check your answers.

Enjoy the challenge that each new exam brings to you. I believe a good learning habit will finally help you gain success.

Yours ,

Li Hua
