Suddenly a sweet voice broke the hypnotic trance (昏昏欲睡) we were all caught in. “Mom,

“No, honey. Wait until it slows down a bit, or we’ll get wet

When people reunite(重聚)with their loved ones, it’s usually all extremely happy moment. But what is their most common response to seeing them again? It may seem strange, but most of the time they break down in tears.

Now a group of psychologists from Yale University say they have found the reason why, and that crying tears of joy may well be the body’s way of keeping emotional balance. “They seem to take place when people are overtaken by strong positive emotions, and people who do this seem to recover better from those strong emotions.” Oriana Aragon, the lead researcher said.

Aragon and her fellow psychologists looked at hundreds of participants’(参与者的)

emotional responses to different things, including happy reunions and cute babies. Many participants said they would react in a negative(消极的)or fierce way to the positive things --- to cry at happy moments and want to pinch (捏) a cute baby’s face or even tell them “I want to eat

you up!” But then researchers found that these people were able to calm

down from strong emotions more quickly.

There are many other examples of times when people respond to a positive experience with a negative emotional reaction. At an exciting concert, fans scream at their idols. People who have

just had a big lottery(彩票)win are often in floods of tears. “These findings advance our

Hawking died early Wednesday at his home in England at the age of 76. Throughout his career as one of the world’s most recognizable universal thinkers, he regularly threw himself into pop culture’s comedic ring with cameos (客串)on programs such as The Simpsons and Late Night with Conan O’Bri en.

These appearances described Hawking ’s personal life as much as his universe-shaking theoretical work. Humor, however, was not just one side of

his personality, but a solution to overcoming the disease he struggled against since 1963.

“Keeping an active mind has been important to my survival, as has keeping a sense of humor.” Hawking said in a 2013 documentary. “I am probably better known for my appearances on The Simpsons and Late Night with Conan

O’Brien than I am for my scientific discoveries.”

At 21, Hawking was diagnosed (诊断)with a condition similar to

amyotrophic lateral

scle rosis (ALS 肌萎缩性侧索硬化症), also known as Lou Gehrig ’s disease. According to the ALS Association, “Half of all people affected with ALS live at most three or more years after diagnosis. Twenty percent live five years or more; only ten percent will live more than ten years.”

The disease would finally shut down Hawking ’s motor functions, making

him speechless and unable to move without a wheelchair. Doctors said he would be dead in two years. His condition, however, proved to be a rare slow-acting style.

But Hawking fought through his worse physical state, rising to a position as a celebrated professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge and changing the popular conception of physics with his 1988 bestseller --- A Brief History of Time.

“When I turned 21, my expectations were reduced to zero.” he said in a TV show. He added, “It was important that I came to appreciate what I did have. It’s also important not to become angry, no matter how difficult life is, because you can lose all hope if you can’t laugh at yourself and at life in general.”

minded. D. He was intelligent and

warm-hearted.

the disease.
