About 800 years ago, a Chinese man named Wan Hu made the world’s first rocket but unfortunately lost his life. It was not until April 24th, 1970 that China launched its first satellite Dongfanghong-1, which made the country a modern space-exploring (太空探索) nation.

To celebrate the first big success for the country’s space development, April 24 is now China’s Space Day, which started this year. While celebrating, China also announced new exploration plans to make a space station and go to Mars and beyond.

A space station is like a home for astronauts in space. Astronauts live and work on a space station and spaceships can even park there. China plans to finish building its space station in 2022.

According to China’s top space scientist Zhou Jianping, by that time, becoming an astronaut will be a normal job because more space exploration means that astronauts are needed more than

ever before. They also need to be able to finish more tasks. “We’ve been choosing astronauts mainly from pilots. Now, we will also pick them from engineers, doctors and space technology experts.”

Another plan is about Mars. China will launch a probe(探测器) to Mars—around 2020. It will land there and even bring back things from the Mars surface, a plan that never has been achieved by any country.

“It’s such a big plan,” said Zhang Rongqiao, the chief designer of China’s Mars plan. “Only by doing this can China say it has truly started the exploration of deep space. And the exploration will help us understand how the universe changes, how life comes into being and the structure of matter(物质的结构).”

Heavy smog has been covering many cities in northern China. It has caused the government to invent the mist cannon(水雾大炮). The mist cannon can be used to fight with pollution.

The mist cannon is a large machine. It is fixed on a truck that sprays(喷洒)water mist. It is not well-known, but gaining popularity. They were firstly used at building houses to reduce dust. But engineers have improved the machines. They want to make them send off drops of mist. “It is now for fighting airborne particles(大气尘埃)and protecting the environment,” said Xu Yuexin, an engineer with Beijing Capital Group Boom-sound Environment Science & Technology Co Ltd. It provides the mist cannon service in parts of the capital.

“The truck works by spraying water mist. Then they could combine with the dust and small particles to fall to the ground,” Xu said. Experts have found they’re effective, but have their limits. They are only one of the measures being taken. However, reducing emissions(排放)is still the best way to control air pollution for the longer term. The government should pay more attention to measures to cut emissions.

Many Germans, both the young and the old, love celebrating their birthdays. In Germany, like in most countries around the world, cake, presents, family and friends bring fun and happiness to such a special day. In general, birthday customs(风俗)in Germany are similar to ones in American birthday celebrations. However, there are some different ones one should pay attention to when in Germany.
