Some recent surveys show that the health conditions of many white collar employees and office workers are rather critical. Death cases among white collar employees and office workers are increasing year by year and these cases are generally believed to have been caused by overwork and spending little time taking rest or doing exercise. If their offices are within the distance of half an hour's walk, some office workers now choose to go to work on foot. Ms. Deng, who works in a foreign enterprise in Beijing, has been walking to her office for more than six months now. I usually have a tight work schedule and can't find time to do exercise. So I choose to walk to work. As she said, if the office is not far from home, most women would like to go to work on foot. Walking is good for their health and can help them to keep good figures as well.Apart from walking to office, one can also find time to do exercise when one is at work. The simplest way is to abandon the lift. Mr. Wei, who works in the Passenger Service Department at Shenzhen Airlines, is one of such men who frequently climb stairs to his office. I only use the lift whenever I'm with my colleagues or my boss. Otherwise, I would climb stairs instead of taking the lift.In addition, some office workers try to find time to go to a gym at the end of a day. Ms. Sang works in a law firm in Shenzhen. She goes to the gym several times a week when she has the time.I go to the gym every weekend. During the weekdays, I will also go there whenever I have the time. Ms. Sang and her husband both have a gym membership card for a whole year. The cards cost them 3, 000 yuan. However they think it's worth it.(1)What is the best title of the passage? (No more than 8 words)(2)How many ways that office workers keep healthy are mentioned in the passage and what are they? (No more than 15 words)(3)What does the underlined "abandon" mean? (1)White-collar workers going to great lengths for stress reliefA soldier of the South Korean special attack corps paints his eyes during a friendly Taekwondo match at a South Korean Army Base in Pochon, north of Seoul.Stressed out white-collar workers are scaling(攀登) skyscrapers, camping out on rooftops, smashing up restaurants, pretending to be children and even visiting cemeteries in a bid to relieve the pressure of modern life.As the country's economy continues to steam ahead, once popular forms of entertainment, such as karaoke, card games and even boxing bars, appear to be losing their appeal.Consider the members of Shanghai's Cat Rain club. By day, this group of young women works executive jobs, but by night they climb buildings so they can spend the night on the roof."It's a good way to release our pressure. You feel relaxed when you're sitting on the roof, looking up to the sky and chatting with intimate(亲密的)friends," said Gong Ying, 25.The stress of work is not just limited to people in Shanghai.A recently opened restaurant in Beijing encourages customers to smash plates - as long as they are willing to pay to replace them.Though there has been some debate about the extravagance(奢侈)of such services, some psychologists say the activity reflects the desire of some white-collar workers to vent their angst. Some workers even appear eager to return to their childhoods. This May, hundreds of people took part in a festival in which adults pretended to be children. It was an adults-only event, and participants could read comics and eat sweets all day.Scenic places such as parks and rivers can also help people relax and put things in perspective. But a cemetery?Cemetery companies in Shanghai organized visits to local graveyards for stressed-out workers in March. The participants were taken to quiet spots in the cemetery where they could contemplate(考虑、打算)life and their futures.Roof-camper Chen Bin, an IT marketing professional, said she had camped out on a rooftop about 30 times. When she's not sleeping out under the stars, she also has several other adrenalin-fueled interests, such as downhill racing and paragliding."Pressure may bring us distress, but it doesn't mean we can't find ways out," Chen says. "Life should be imaginative."Keys: 1. stress 2. popular 3. past 4. modern 5. roof 6. smash 7.pretend 8. relax 9. sleeping 10. imaginative( 2 )请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。
一、高中英语任务型阅读1.任务型阅读Directions:Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. Most parents know that they need life insurance. But many would rather have a root canal than shop for the best life insurance policy.“People don't think about, What will my family do if I am gone and not earning a living?'” says Peter Katt, a fee-only life insurance adviser.“ The who le point of this kind of planning is to provide the family with maximum flexibility so they're not stuck.”Planning for your death is not a cheerful topic. Too often, parents make a quick decision, ignoring important considerations. Among their mistakes one is that they do not buy enough life insurance. ________“They don't think that the person who is not bringing in an income needs life insurance,” says Greg Daugherty, executive editor of Consumers Union. But if that person dies, the other parent can't stop working and usually has to pay someone to help care for the family.________ Katt recommended that one young couple should buy $3 million for the husband who earns $100,000 a year and $1 million for the stay-at-home wife.At the same time, many families rely on employer-provided life insurance, but employer-provided coverage is rarely sufficient to support your family. Many employer-provided policies provide a death benefit of $10,000 to $25,000—barely enough to cover your funeral expense. Some employers provide a year's salary, but that may also fall well short of the amount your family would need to maintain its standard of living. Some employers let workers buy group life insurance through payroll deductions. They may be a good deal for workers who have health problems that would disqualify them for an individual policy. But if you're young and healthy, you may be able to get a better rate on your own.Another drawback is that if you leave your job, you may not be able to take your in surance.“ Given the job market, most of us are not absolutely certain that our jobs are secure,” Daugherty says.“________”On the other hand, some families buy too much insurance. Not everyone needs life insurance. Some people buy life insurance for babies, which is unnecessary, unless the baby is a child model who is supporting the family, Daugherty says: The purpose of insurance is to replace the income that a family has been relying on. Single people and those who have no children to care for usually don't need life insurance.Katt says a man with substantial savings in stocks and bonds and other sources of income recently asked him how much life insurance he needs.“ I said none,” Katt says. “________”A. There are people who don't need life insurance but have it and many more people who need it but are woefully uninsured.B. Families don't always insure a parent who is staying home to care for the children.C. Most people put off buying life insurance for any number of reasons if they even understand it.D. Even if you have a lot of insurance at work, it makes sense to have some more insurance onyour own.E. If you fall seriously ill of suffer significant injury later, it will make it tougher to get that kind of policy, if any at all.F. Most of us probably dreamed about becoming an astronaut when we were little. But how many of us actually became one, or are at least working toward it?The advice “Always follow your dreams” is something that is typically easier said than done. But still, this is the one piece of advice that Alyssa Carson wants to share with her peers. This 17-year-old girl from the US has become one of the candidates for NASA's 2033 project to go to Mars. If everything goes well, Carson will be one of the first human beings to ever set foot on the red planet.Carson has dreamed of going to Mars since she was only three years old. Watching an astronaut-themed cartoon and learning that humans have only been to the moon but not Mars, Carson decided that she wanted to be the first one to do so.Since then, she has worked hard toward this goal. At the age of 12, Carson became the first person to attend all three NASA space camps, and she sat with real astronauts in a NASA panel(座谈会) to discuss the future of Mars missions. Now 17, Carson is continuing with her space training while still taking on her high school work like a “normal” teenager, except that she studies all her subjects in four languages –English, French, Spanish and Chinese.“I don't think there's anything specific that makes it easier for me or makes it something that others can't do,” Carson said in an interview with Uproxx News. “I've just really focused myself on what I want to accomplish.”And Carson is willing to make sacrifices for her dream. She's fully aware of the danger of the mission and the possibility that she might never be able to come back. She also accepts the fact that she can't get married and start a family because any loved ones left on Earth may be a distraction for her and for the mission. But Carson believes that it's all worth it, summarizing her view with this ancient Greek proverb she once quoted, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they'll never sit in.”So after all the hard work that Carson has done and all the sacrifices she's made, everything still boils down to the simple phrase, “follow your dreams”. And while some people's dreams may sound out of this world, in Carson's case, they literally(毫不夸张地) are.(1)What will happen to Carson in 2033 if everything goes well? (No more than 8 words) (2)Why did Carson decide to be the first one to go to Mars? (No more than 20 words)(3)How does Carson differ from other students for the school work? 三明市高考英语任务型阅读试题(含答案)(1)一、高中英语任务型阅读1.任务型阅读Just as team members today have assigned doing roles, there should also be thinking roles. By knowing how other members of your learn and organization think---and by others knowing how you think—everyone can be more productive. So how should you evaluate how you and your team think? After a lot of trial-and-error, we developed a three-step method that delivers practical and meaningful results.Focus. Do you tend to pay the most attention to ideas, process, action, or relationships? For example, in the morning do you think about the problems you need to solve, the plans you need to make, the actions you need to take, or the people you need to see? This isn't about picking one to the exclusion(排除)of the other. It's about where your focus naturally lands.Orientation(方向). A good way to identify your orientation is thinking about what tends to bother you in meetings. Are you more likely to complain about getting dragged into the weeds or about things being too general and not specific enough? These dimensions are complementary(补充的)to personality, skills, and traditional roles.Combination. By combing these two dimensions you can know about the thinking style at work in whatever context or setting you chose. When you know your thinking style, you know what naturally energizes you, why certain type of problems are challenging or boring, and what you can do to improve in areas that are important to reaching your goals. Once you know your style, it helps to share it with others, and have others share theirs with you. In this way, your thinking style becomes a useful tool---a kind of social currency---for the team. Imaging you put together a team to work on a new initiative(行动). Wouldn't you like to know who is energized by big-picture strategy discussions and who finds them frustrating? Who likes to work on the details of the execution? And who is energized by managing the team dynamics? The landscape of business is changing rapidly, and we have to find new and better ways to connect and communicate. We all want to work better together, the challenge is actually making it happen. Understanding collaboration(合作)through the way of thinking rather than doing is a practical and powerful step forward.【答案】equally;improve/increase;evaluating;thinking;choice;whether;combine;contributes/leads;Conclusion;how【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,正如今天的团队成员分配的角色一样,也应该有思考的角色,两者同样重要。

There's a contradiction in the way many of us behave online: we know we're being watched all the time, and disapprove of the monitor by Google and the government. But the bounds of what's considered too personal to be uploaded or shared online seems to shrink by the day.I complain about the lack of privacy, for example, and yet I willingly and routinely trade it for convenience. I no longer run the risk of unforeseen delays on public transport; Google Maps will inform me of the fastest route to my destination; I no longer need to remember my friends' birthdays; Facebook will urge me, and invariably appeal to me to post an update to remind people I exist. All I have to do is make my location, habits and beliefs transparent to their parent companies whenever they choose to check in on me.So what's going on? “Visibility is a trap,” explained the French philosopher Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish: the Birth of the Prison(1975). Allowing oneself to be watched, and learning to watch others, is both attractive and dangerous. He took for example “Panopticon”, a prison where prisoners were observed from a tower manned by an invisible occupant. The prisoners would believe in the presence of the mysterious watchman, whether or not anyone was actually inside, and behave themselves.According to Foucault, the dynamics of the Panopticon are similar to how generally people self-monitor in society. In the presence of ever-watching witness, people police themselves. They don't know what the observers are looking for, or what the punishments are for disobedience (不顺从). But they willingly accept and follow this invisible discipline.Foucault claimed that such monitoring is worrisome, not just because of what companies and states might do with our data, but because the act of watching is itself a terrible exercise of power, which may influence behavior without our fully realizing it.But something's not right here. Why does the self-display continue when we are sure that we are watched from everywhere and nowhere?Social media provides a public space that often operates more like a private one, where many people hold the belief that there they won't suffer the consequences of what they say online, as if protected by technology.Plato would be alarmed by the lack of shame online. His point about moral knowledge is this: we already know the right way to live a just and fulfilling life, but are constantly distracted(转移) from that noble aim. For him, then, shame helps us be true to ourselves and to pay attention to the moral knowledge within. A man without shame, Plato says, is a slave to desire — for material goods, power, fame, respect. Such desire, by its nature, cannot be satisfied.Phenomenon While people hate being monitored, the ________ of privacy is gradually becoming a more serious problem. My experience I complain about the lack of privacy but still exchange it for convenience.convenience* I ________ on Google maps for the fastest route to avoid delays on public transport.* Facebook will remind me of my friends' birthdays, andappeal to me to be updated.cost I must make my ________ information available to relevant companies.Michel Foucault's explanations Idea: Visibility is a trap.An analogy:* In the Panopticon, prisoners behave themselves just because they believed they were watched by an ________ watchman.* In real life, the way people self-monitor ________ the dynamics of the Panopticon. They willingly follow the invisible discipline.Worries: Our data may be ________ and monitoring may influence us to change our behavior ________.Reasons for contraction Though being watched, self-display continues because some netizens think that they don't need to take ________ for what they say online. Conclusion*Shame is essential in leading a just and fulfilling life.*Shame helps us stay true to ourselves and focus on our ________.*Shame can ________ us being a slave to desires for fame and fortune.【答案】 invasion /violation /leak /lack;depend /rely /count;private /personal;invisible;resembles;abused/ misused;unconsciously;responsibility;morality /moral(s);prevent/stop【解析】【分析】本文是一篇议论文,我们所有网上的行为都被监视,虽然网络给我们带来了便利,但隐私的泄露却给我带来了很大的影响。
高考英语任务型阅读练习十二篇(一)At the beginning of the twentieth century, many people thought that the American family wasfalling apart. A century later, we know that this was not the case. However, although the family isstill alive in the United States, its size and shape were very different 100 years ago.In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were mainly two types of families in the UnitedStates: the extended and the nuclear. The extended family usually includes grandparents, parents, and children living under the same roof. The nuclear family consists of only parents and children.Today there are many different kinds of families. Some people live in “traditional”that is, a stay-home mother, a working father, and their own biological children. Others live intwo-paycheck families, single-parent families, adoptive or foster, families, blended families(where men and women who were married before marry again and combine the children fromprevious marriages into the new families),child less families, and so on.What caused the structure of the family to change? In the early 1900s the birthrate began tofall and the divorce rate began to rise. Women were suddenly choosing to go to college and takejobs outside the home. In the 1930s and 1940s, many families faced serious financial, or moneyproblems during the Great Depression, when many people lost their jobs. During World War II(1939-1945),5 million women were left alone to take care of their homes and their children.Because many men were at war, thousands of these "war widows" had to go to work outside theirhome.During the next ten years, the situation changed. There were fewer divorces, and peoplemarried at a younger age and had more children than the previous generation. It was unusual for amother to work outside the home during the years when her children were growing tip. Familiesbegan leaving cities and moving into single-family homes in the suburbs. The traditional familyseemed to be returning. In the years between 1960s and 1990s, there were many important changes in the structure ofthe family. From the 1960s to the early 1970s, the divorce rate doubled and the birthrate fell byhalf. The number of single-parent families tripled, and the number of couples living togetherwithout being married doubled again. In fact, the single-parent household, once unusual, hasreplaced the "traditional" family as the typical family in the States. If we can judge from history, however, this will probably change again in the twenty-first century. The Changes of the American FamilyMain comparisons ContextsDifferent___1____There were two __2___ types of families in the past, ___3____, the extended and the nuclear.Nowadays __4___types of families can be seen than before.Changes in different___5_____.In the 1900s and1940sMany of the women had to workoutside due to the __6___of money., thuscausing the fall of __7__and the rise ofdivorce rate.In the 1950sDivorce rate slided and there weremore children . There was the public male realm(领域)of "rational accomplishment" and cruel competition, and the private female and child-rearing sphere of home, intuition(直觉)and emotion. The private realm was supposed to be isolated from the realities of adult life. For both better and worse, television andother electronic media tend to break down the difference between those two worlds. The membrane around the family sphere is much more permeable(可渗透的). TV takes public events and transforms them into dramas that are played out in the privacy of our living rooms, kitchensand bedrooms.Parents used to be the channel through which children learned about the outside world. They could decide what to tell their children and when to tell it to them. Since children learn to read in stages, books provide a kind of natural screening process, where adults can decide what to tell and not tell children of different reading abilities. Television destroyed the system that separated adult from child knowledge and separated information into year-by-year slices for children of different ages. Instead, it presents the same information directly to children of all ages, without going through adult filters. So television presents a real challenge to adults. While a parent can read a newspaper without sharing it with children in the same room, television is accessible to everyone in that space. And unlike books, television doesn't allow us to flip(翻转)through it and see what's coming up. We may think we're giving our children a lesson in science by having them watch the Challenger take off, and then suddenly they learn about death, disaster and adult mistakes.Books allow adults to discuss privately what to tell or not tell children. This also allows parents to keep adult material secret from children and keep their secret keeping secret. Take that same material and put it on The Today Show and you have 800,000 children hearing the very things the adults are trying to keep from them. "Television takes our kids across the globe before parents give them permission to cross the street."More importantly, children gradually learn that adults are worried and anxious about being parents. Actually, television has also places families under a lot of stress. How Television Changes Childhood?Main comparisons ContextsDistance between ___1__and the outside.Homes used to be isolated from the ___2___realm.Homes nowadays are __3__to the outside world.Media through which children can obtaininformationIn the past, children might learn __4__about the outside world with the help ofparents and ___5___.More information is got directly through TV and other electronic media, which breaks down the __6___ between adult world and the child world._____7___ of the information children getTraditionally, kids could only knew what they should learn at their age, carefully___8___by their parents.Everything can possibly be known by children, including many aspects of _____ life.Effects on family educationParental instructionFamilies are now under greater stress than before. Content8. decided/ chosen9.adult 10. challenges(三)Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion? In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is ajungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences. In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts. Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others canactually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship. In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others. Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish?Main comparisons Contexts__1__ are changing In the past people put caring, sharing andgenerosity in the first ____2____.Nowadays, people seem to be more____3____about themselves.___4___are changing too. However, the image of product and the consuming circumstance have become the key points to attract customer awareness and stimulate their buying needs. Frequently, customers buy goods just because they are cute, lovely and unique. With a less emphasis on functional utilities, the experience and imaginative space are placed into an increasingly important role. The image of product is emphasized, as well as the communication between products and consumers.“Customer behavior, which appears to be focused and directed at the object and at p leasure, infact responds to quite different objectives: displaced expression of desire, and the production of acode of social values through the use of differential signs”(Baudrillard) . The reason forimage-oriented customer behavior is probably that customers’ lifestyle has been continuouslyvirtualized by paying much attention to “Virtual Reality”.The evidences can be traced fromcomputer games and Hollywood movies, in which customers’ preference for fleeing reality isperfectly matched. This change requires us to take efforts to enhance product image by integrating style, color, taste, shape and material, and communicate with customers creatively, imaginatively andinnovatively, and enable them to enjoy the distinctive experience image brings. “[A] need is not aneed for a particular object as much as it is a ‘need’ for difference” ( Baudrillard). Michael in Shanghaisays he is 26 and has battled obesity for most of his life.Obesity , a severe weight problem, is a complex condition. A doctor may advise taking medicine along with changing one’s behaviors. Experts say that the most successful weightloss plans include a well-balanced diet and exercise.People who want to avoid weight gain have to balance the number of calories they eat withthe number of calories they use. To lose weight, you can reduce the number of calories you take in, increase the number you use, or both.A recent study looked at four of the most popular dieting plans in the US. Researchers at Stanford University in California studied over 300 overweight women, mostly in their thirties and forties. Each woman went on one of the four plans: Atkins, The Zone, Ornish or LEARN. Thewomen attended diet classes and received written information about the food plans. At the end of the year, the women on the Atkins diet had lost the most, more than four andone-half kilograms on average. They also did better on tests for cholesterol levels and blood pressure.Christopher Gardner, who led the study, says the Atkins diet may be more successfulbecause of its simple message to eat less sugar. He also says that the advice to increase protein in the diet leads to more satisfying meals. He says that there was not enough money to study men,but that men would probably have similar results.Last week, another report based on thirty-one studies suggested that only a small minorityof people have long-term success with dieting. Most dieters regained their lost weight within fiveyears and often they become more overweight. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把…按能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade! Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect for their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, toanalyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks andassignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.Develop the abilities of pupils:●develop their full abilities, not their 1. ___________●value personal qualities●2.__________pupils-streamed teaching(disadvantages)3._____________ teaching (advantages) ●not4.________ the fact that children develop at different rates●have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child ● 5.________ the pupils who areat the bottom of the top grade●rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability ●only one aspect for pupils ’ total personality●6._________ pupils ’ full abilities.●give them the opportunity to learn to cooperate, to share, and to develop7. ________●learn how to cope with 8.________ ●learn how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate 9.__________.●The pupils learn from each other10.______ from the teacher.●They can do this at their own speed答案:1. academic ability2. social skills3. mixed-ability4. take into account5. discourage6. contribute to7. leadership skills8. personal problems9. effectively 10. as well as(七)There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.By contrast (对照) , the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, sinceit is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have , and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept. In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face. How we see ourselves as the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at firstwe try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt (适应) change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all. These feelings of insecurity (不安全) and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary ifwe are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.Title 1.________—Product or ProcessProduct:easily identified and 2.______ ●The workers4 .________●The students improve 5._________●The foreigners learns n ew languagesProcess:●3.___________ to determine ●never really ends●the attitudes, feelings people have●6.____________●experience the world7._____________●try new ideas●accept 8.__________●a willingness to 9.________●face the unknown●accept the possibility that they may “fail”●tend to take more chances and be more open to10.___________答案:1. Before that time, large computers were only used by large, rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work that used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most smaller companies can use themThe main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors (处理器) , or WPS as they are often called. 40% of British offices are now estimated to have a wordprocessor and this percentage is growing fast. There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re-typing letters and storing papers. He or shecan use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager’s point of secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobsautomatically outside office hours. But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this willmean that fewer secretaries will be needed. Another worry is the increasing medical problemsrelated to work with visual display units (显示器). The case of a slow loss of sight among peopleusing word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at aVDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed. Safety screens to put over aVDU have been invented but few companies in England bother to buythem.Whatever the arguments for and against word processor, they are a key feature (特征) of thisrevolution in office practice.small computers:▲1._______ larger and expensive computers▲2._________can use them▲Small computers has been 3._________in the field of word processors, or WPSadvantages 4.________▲The secretary :●freed from a lot of 5._________●do other more interesting work for the boss▲6.___________●secretarial time can be made better use of●7._______ can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hours.▲8. __________ will lost their jobs.▲medical problems related to work withvisual display units●Many people 9_________slowly●The unborn child in its mother’s body10.___________答案:1. replace2. most smaller companies3.improved4.disadvantages5.daily work6. Codes are one way of writing in secrets. Ciphers(暗码) are another. In the codeeach word is written as a secret code or word number. In a cipher each letter is changed.Codes and ciphers have played an important role in the history of the word. Julius Caesar, theRoman ruler who defeated almost all the countries in Europe about 2000years ago, used a cipherwhen he sent secret messages to his troops. During American Revolution, George Washington’spies used a kind of code to send him information about the enemy before his military(军事的)action. In World War 2,the American “broke”, or figured out, Japan’s most important navy code and got enough information to destroy a powerful Japanese fleet(舰队)。
How is it that siblings(兄弟姐妹)can turn out so differently? Each sibling grows up in a different family. The first-born is, for a while, an only child, and therefore has a pletely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is, for a while, the youngest, until the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too. One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father.Sibling petition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918.But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a l asting force in each others’lives. Dr.Annette Henderson says first-born children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren’t getting the same one-on-one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development. Later-borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I”and “me”.A Cambridge University study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially. Love-hate relationships were mon among the children. Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive munication as the other sibling pairs. One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age. Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third. Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being more feminine than girls with sisters. A xx research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.Title: Reasons for the (71)___________ betweeen siblingsKey: 71.difference 72.experiencing 73. grow 74.arriving 75.shaped 76. effect/influence 77. learn 78. necessarily 79. seeking 80. gap(2)The fast development of Internet makes it convenient for people to have access to the latest information all over the world, which broadens people's horizons. However, sometimes the Internet is abused by some to spread rumors(谣言)on purpose, resulting in side effect on people's life. Therefore, The Internet Society of China released a written proposal last Monday which demanded of Internet panies and websites to strengthen self-discipline and prevent the spread of online rumors.Three major websites in China voiced their solutions Tuesday to fight against online rumors in response to the warning on Monday.Chiefs of sina, baidu and qq have promised the government that theywill firmly cooperate with relevant departments to deal with the online spreading of rumors, saying they will improve self-management and take effective measures toward this goal.Microblogging websites should not be a hotbed for spreading of rumors, said a chief of sina, which operates the country's most popular microblogging site Weibo. He said Sina was making efforts to control the release of contents on Weibo and improve its ability to find out and remove rumors posted on it.Weibo and another major Chinese microblogging site t.qq stopped their ment functions from March 31 to April 3 after they were punished for allowing rumors to spread.A chief from Baidu said it was calling off illegal and fake(虚假)information in its search results and it would further increase technical and manpower investment to remove disinformation. The website qq is learning from the past experience and bettering the safety strategy for its microblogging service to further prevent the spreading of online rumors through microblogging sites, said an unnamed chief from qq.The measure has received widespread support from users and now people can enjoy a relative clean and safe net environment.参考答案:1.worldwide;2.Problems/Disadvantages;3.purposely/deliberately;4.demanding;5.cooperate;6.taken;7.discover;8.illegal;9.strategy;10.relatively(3)The word science is heard so often in modern times that almost everybody has an idea of its meaning. However, its definition is difficult for many people. The meaning of the term is confusing, but everyone should understand its meaning and objectives (目标). Just to make the explanation as simple as possible, suppose science is defined as classified knowledge or facts.Even in the true science, distinguishing fact from fiction is not always easy. For this reason great care should be taken to distinguish between beliefs and truths. There is no danger as long as a clear difference ismade between temporary and proved explanations. For example, hypotheses(假设) and theories are attempts to explain natural phenomena. From these positions the scientist continues to experiment and observe until they are proved or discredited. The exact status of any explanation should be clearly labeled to avoid confusion. The objectives of science are primarily the discovery and later the understanding of the unknown. Man cannot be satisfied with recognizing that secrets exist in nature of that questions are unanswerable; he must solve them. Toward that end, specialists in the field of biology and related fields of interest are directing much of their time and energy.Actually, two basic approaches lead to the discovery of new information. One, aimed at satisfying curiosity, is referred to as pure science. Sometimes practical-minded people miss the point of pure science in thinking only of its immediate application for economic rewards. However, one should remember that the construction of the microscope had to e before the discovery of the cell. The host of scientists devoting their lives to pure science are not apologetic about ignoring the practical side of their discoveries; they know from experience that most knowledge is eventuallyapplied. The other is aimed at using knowledge for specific purposes--for instance, improving health, raising standards of living, or creating new consumer products. In this case knowledge is put to economic use. Such an approach is referred to as applied science.71.nature 72.Definition 73.simply 74.easy75.aimed76.approaches 77.ignoring 78.curiosity 79.Applied e(4)Throw the bottles and boxes of drugs out of your house. A new theory suggests that medicine could be bad for your health, which should at leaste as good news to people who cannot afford to buy expensive medicine. Thisnew theory argues that healing is at our fingertips: we can be healthy bydoing Yoga on a regular basis.Supporters of medical treatment argue that medicine should be trustedsince it is effective and scientifically proven. They say that there isno need for spiritual methods such as Yoga. These waste our time, somethingwhich is quite precious in our material world. There is medicine that cankill our pain, x-rays that show us our bones or MRI that scans our brainfor tumors (肿瘤).We must admit that these methods are very effective in the examples thatthey provide. However, there are some “everyday plaints” such as backpains, headaches, insomnia, which are treated currently with medicine. When you have a headache, you take an Aspirin; when you cannot sleep, you take Xanax without thinking of the side effects of these. When you use these pills for a long period, you bee addicted to them; you cannot sleep without them. We pay huge amounts of money and bee addicted instead of getting better. How about a safer and more economical way of healing? When doing Yoga, you do not need anything except your energy so it is very economical. Its popularity has spread particularly throughout America and Western Europe. In quantum (量子) physics, energy is recognized as the fundamental substance (物质) which the universe consists of. Yoga depends on the energy within our bodies. It is a simple and effective way of restoring the energy flow. There are no side effects and it is scientifically explained.Opponents of alternative healing methods also claim that serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer cannot be treated without drugs. They think so because these patients spend the rest of their lives in the hospital taking medicine. How can Yoga make these people healthy again? It is very unfortunate that these patients have to live in the hospital losing their hair because of chemotherapy (化疗), losing weight because of the sideeffects of the medicine they take. Actually, it is mon knowledge that except for when the cancer is recognized at an early stage, drugs also cannot treat AIDS or cancer. Most of the medicines these patients use are to ease their pain and their sufferings. Instead of drugs which are expensive and have many side effects, you can use your energy to overe the hardships of life, find an emotional balance, leave the stress of everyday life and let go of the everyday worries. We should definitely start learning Yoga and avoid illnesses before it is too late.71. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down a street after someone he wants to talk to.Little of his time is spent in chatting. He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty of stupid crimes. Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as he’s arrested, the story is over. In real life, finding criminal is seldom much of a problem. Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attacks, little effort is spent on searching.Having made an arrest, a detective really starts to work. He has to prove his case in court and to do that he often has to gather a lot of different evidence.A third big difference between the drama detective and the real one is the unpleasant pressures: first, as members of a police force, they alwayshave to behave absolutely in accordance with the law. Secondly, as expensive public servants, they have to get results. They can hardly ever do both. Most of the time some of them have to break the rules in small ways.If the detective has to deceive the world, the world often deceives him. Hardly anyone he meets tells him the truth. And this separation the detective feels between himself and the rest of the world is deepened by the simple-minded —as he see it —of citizens, social workers, doctors, law-makers, and judges, who, instead of eliminating crime, punish the criminals less severely in the hope that this will make them reform. The result, detective feel, is that nine-tenths of their work is re-catching people who should have stayed behind bars. Conclusion(8)A new set of brain images shows why: Reading the Roman alphabets and Chinese characters uses different parts of the brain. The results also suggest that Chinese schoolchildren have reading problems in a different part of the brain used in reading alphabet-based languages. This shows that the learning disorder dyslexia (inability to read properly) is not the same in very culture and does not have a universal biological cause.Scientists described the results as “very important and revolutionary”. While dyslexia has certain mon roots, they said, they now have some proof that this kind of functional problem works differently according to the different demands that Western and Eastern languages place on the brain.Dyslexia is a mon developmental disorder in which people of normal intelligence have difficulty learning to read, spell and master other language skills. The results suggest that treating dyslexia around the world probably will require different treatments.“Reading is plex,” said Guinevere Eden, Georgetown University professor. “This shows we need to be more open-minded about diverse treatment approaches.”Its origins are plex. There appears to be a genetic aspect to the illness. It also may result from brain injury before birth that changes visual and hearing pathways in the brain.Earlier brain scans show that English-reading dyslexics don’t function properly in a left part of the brain associated with the awareness of 44 sounds from the English alphabet. However, according to the new study, reading Chinese uses some different parts of the brain located in the left-front of the brain. It is associated with symbol interpretation. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive reckless ly up and down America’s main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn’t forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman’s funeral (葬礼). I didn’t expect the event to affect me. Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved. Then her teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began: “I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our famil y dog would literally attract her, what would Nana say? ‘Oh, what beautiful markings that dog has.’ That was Nana.“She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for Grandpa’s career,” he said, with a voice now trembling. “That was Nana’s way.”Through a muffled sob, he continued. “Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you’d have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to brag.”Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, “Nana taught me courage. She put up an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana’s way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner.”There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven’t learned to be controlled. When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest ally and dearest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ritual. He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death. All over again we felt those powerful losses crisscrossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you say good-bye to a beloved grandparent, you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself. And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.1. highly 2 moved 3 influence 4 valuable 5 showed6. business 7 drop 8 sorrow 9 mind 10 control(10)Time talks. It speaks more plainly than words. Time municates in many ways.In social life, time plays a very important part. In the United States, guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation toa dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But this is perhaps not true in some other countries. There it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meanings of time differ in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life. For example, no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour. It would be too impolite. When equals(同辈) meet, a person who is five minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than five minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not plete the sentence. In the western world, particularly in the United States, people tend to think of time as something fixed in nature, something from which one cannot escape. As a rule, Americans think of time as a road stretching intothe future, along which one progresses. The road has many sections which are to be kept separate—“one thing at a time”. People who cannot plan events are not highly regarded. The American idea of the future is limited, however. It is the foreseeable future, not the future of the South Asian, which may involve centuries. Someone has said of the South Asian idea of time. “Time is like a museum with endless halls and rooms. You, the viewer, are walking through the museum in the dark, holding a light to each scene as you pass it. God is in charge of the museum, and only he knows all that is in it. One lifetime represents one room.”Since time has such different meanings in different cultures, munication is often difficult. (一)The Internet is making the world smaller and changing every aspect of our lives. The impact of this, in my opinion, will be strongly felt in the field of education. There are three reasons for this.First, the Internet provides equal opportunities for all students, as long as they can get access to it. In the traditional form of education, students who get higher marks in examines may enter a good school, and those who do not, have to enter a relatively less good one. With the Internet, every student is provided with access to the same educational materials, so they have equal opportunities to improve themselves. In that case, the general quality of education will be highly improved in our country.Second, the Internet poses a challenge to teachers. Traditionally, teachers have controlled education. With the Internet, a student may choose any teacher’s instruction as he wishes. Faced with this, a teacher is likely to try his best to improve his instruction and this will in turn improve the educational quality of our country. Last but not least, the Internet makes education more convenient for students. A student can learn at any time he likes and, at the same time, he can save the money spent on tuition and board. All of these may lead to a revolution in education. It is true that the Internet may still remain out of the reach of some people and maybe less amicable than human teachers. But the point is that, the Internet is sure to accelerate the development of education in our country.(二)Looking ahead to 2010, it appears, in money matters, impossible to provide 85,000 new students with classrooms at public four-year universities. Fortunately, such an approach is not necessary. In fact, it’s not even proper.Several forces are riding to the rescue. The two most important are distance learning and community and technical colleges. These will not remove completely the traditional setting where bachelor’s and graduate degrees are earned. But they will be able to handle much of the growth in the number of the students admitted and the demand for higher education.“When faced with a problem created by technology, bring more technology into operation,” a late reporter declared. High education seems to be an example. New learning technology is a determining tool in teaching new technical skills.William Richardson, president of Johns Hopkins University, praised “Western Governors’ University” --- a virtual institution that uses the Internet and other information technology to overcome the vast distances of the West and reach people with education. “Just as the extremely controlled high school of old was perfect in training for a production-line work force, so today’s college is equally proper as a setting for a society whose members must a cquire and manage knowledge from a wide variety of sources,” he notes.Eastern Washington has long been a leader in this movement. For the past decade, Spokane’s Education Service District 101 has brought the best teachers to country classrooms through satellite uplink. Washington State University (WSU) president Sam Smith reports that, during the same period, WSU managed a one-third increase in students with only 2% more faculty (e.g. teachers and workers)The other cost-effective method is dependence on community and technical colleges. Here, Washington state has an edge. Its public two-year colleges provide the widest coverage in the nation. Jean Floten, president of Bellevue community College, notes the system served 425,000 adult students last year, a tenth of the state’s adult population. Almost half were there for job hunting while 40% for learning preparation. There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, hurt many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.Though in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people hurt many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draw them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their(四)Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people, the nation, especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential of that nation. If today in America, you ask the high school students their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are involved with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.A second group of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area—sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of disorder. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of the sports star.A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model for young people.Today, the rock star, the athlete, and the actors all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? these people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone. What is really sad is that the young people try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American Youngsters are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.Keys :One:1. education2.
