Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization, language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

Sports Professionals' Earning So Much Is Justified

Sports stars are not only famous among young people but also envied by many middle-aged men, who long for wealth. An internationally renowned tennis player could make 100 million US dollars a year, an amount average people could not even dream about. However, I think sports professionals deserve this high pay.

First of all, the career of professional players is usually risky, which is worthy of high returns. Shoulder injuries during practice, tissue damage in games and irreversible symptoms after operation, all haunt each and every sport professional. For instance, Sang Lan, a gymnastic athlete, landed on her head and paralyzed herself from chest down at a young age. With high risks come high returns. This is fully justified. Second, it requires years of efforts and commitment to become a sport professional. No matter how talented one can be, he still needs to get drilling, exercises and training. David Beckham, for example, confessed that he had to kick the football many times a day to refine and perfect his shooting skills. There is nothing wrong about the rewards if one is working hard for them.

In conclusion, I think sports professionals are justified to earn a lot of money, because of the high risk they take and the hardship they go through.

The Importance of the Sense of Social Responsibility

The Importance of the Sense of Social Responsibility

Human beings are social animals: we live in groups; we work in groups. As John Donne said, "No one is an island". Because of this, the importance of having a sense of social responsibility is fairly prominent.

First of all, the sense of social responsibility is beneficial to our social cohesion. Some of us complain that our society is rather fragmented, and not as cohesive as it used to be. One major cause of this fragmentation is that we only mind our own business, without the sense to serve others and the society. If, however, driven by the sense of social responsibility, we would extend our helping hands to those in need, and we would feel nice and warm in the society. Secondly, the sense of social responsibility will make us behave ourselves in public, which is helpful for building a better society. When we walk around major cities, we could invariably notice that some people spit and litter in the street. These people, I dare say, are blind to social responsibility and put their needs before a clean and tidy public environment. If their sense of social responsibility is enhanced, they would be more

civic-minded.

In conclusion, the sense of social responsibility is of vital importance to our social cohesion and civic virtues.

3. The following chart shows the negative influences on left-behind children caused by parents' absence from home. Look at the following picture carefully and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should start with a brief description of the picture, explain its implied meaning, and give your view on the issue.

Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization, language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

Left-Behind Children

The chart reveals the negative effects on children caused by parents' absence from home. As can be seen, the most voiced concern is that children's study outcomes will suffer, with 47% of the respondents believing this is the case. This is followed by children's psychological problems (27%) and life problems (25%). Other less frequently expressed concerns include children's insufficient interpersonal skills (13%) and a sense of insecurity (10%).

Informed by the survey results, one could understand the extent to which children are unfavorably impacted when parents are not around. Based on the results, it is not difficult to explain why

left-behind children tend to underachieve at school. Without parents' guidance, it's hard for children to learn from good examples, and they are more likely to get distracted from study and misbehave. Given the negative effects, parents are advised to put their children before their business, but not the other way around. To parents, no achievement would be greater than their kid's healthy growth.

4. Nowadays, the runaway medical costs impose pressure on many people. Look at the following picture carefully and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should start with a brief description of the picture, explain its implied meaning, and give your view on the issue.

Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization, language quality.

High Charge of Medical Service

In the first part of the picture, a man walking out of a hospital is asking a middle-aged man walking in, "What's wrong?" He answers, "A headache." In the second part, an elderly lady asks the same middle-aged man the same question, "What's wrong?" He replies, "Heartache," holding a medical bill in hand, which says, "A common cold; cost: 888 RMB." This picture apparently intends to draw its readers' attention to the exorbitant prices for medical treatment in today's China. It also implies that many Chinese people could not afford to get sick.

As far as I can see, medical care reforms should be launched to solve this problem. For one thing, doctors' salaries should not be linked to the medication they prescribe and medical checkups they perform. Instead, their income should be based on the performance of their work. For another, the government health care system should cover more categories of medicines for common and chronic diseases, thus reducing the expenditure of the patient.

In short, to make medical treatment more affordable, the government should reform doctors' income structure and extend its healthcare coverage.

5. Read carefully the following excerpt on mobile phones in the classroom and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should:

A Teaching Tool or a Distraction?

After 20 years of teaching, Miriam Morgenstern is calling it quits this month. The Lowell High School history and ESL teacher's reason to leave the classroom is her frustration with students and their cell phones. The texting, tweeting, and Snapchatting during class time are "an incredible distraction, and makes it much more difficult to teach," she said. "It's pretty hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video."

It is the most vexing issue of the digital age for teachers and administrators: What to do about students' cell phones? Some maintain that smartphones and other devices in schools are crucial to being competitive in a global market, while others insist that phones and tablets distract students, compromising their learning and focus.

"You'll get kids saying, 'I'll look something up for English, and while I'm here let me quickly check my Instagram or Twitter feed.' And then it's, 'Oh, I never realized this girl said that to me,' and now they're distracted and not really engaged with their lesson plan," said Joni Siani, a Braintree psychologist and author of "Ceiling Your Soul: No App for Life," about how digital media affect young people. Educators don't agree on much when it comes to digital devices in classrooms, especially since the debate over cell phones is part of a broader conversation about a cultural shift underway in classrooms—a move away from the traditional model of teachers imparting information to students, to one where students actively participate in their own learning, using mobile devices to access the Web, educational apps, and other tools.

Mobile Phone Should Be Used in Class

Whether to use mobile phones in class is a controversial issue. Some teachers and administrators claim that cell phones are distractions. However, others maintain that cell phones can make students remain competitive and more engaged in their study. As far as I am concerned, negative as it may sound, the presence of mobile phone, if used properly, is actually beneficial to college students.

First of all, with advanced apps and software, mobile phones could be the very platform for immersible learning. Useful information is actually one touch away and it can be "pushed" to cell phones and stored for intensive study. Better still, it could be shared among students and teachers instantaneously, without wasting time to copy the materials and hand them out in the next class. Second, mobile phone, with Internet access, could be a walking encyclopedia, always ready to impart

knowledge. This is especially helpful for discovery learning in class. Teachers may assign some query tasks for students, who can make the best use of their mobile phones to locate the answer, collaboratively or individually. The hands-on learning experience is not only beneficial but also fun, which is a way better than the teacher preaching in the lectern.

In conclusion, mobile phones should be allowed in class, as they could serve as a useful tool for discovery and immersible learning.
