TheHazelett ElasticMooringSystemOur refined elastic mooring system is the result of a seed that was planted over 60 yearsago when Bill Hazelett rode out the tail end of the 1938 hurricane on board a 48-ft boatat Indian Harbor Yacht Club, in Greenwich, CT. Bill noticed that the heavy chain moor-ing the boat became an unforgiving rod of steel. Some years later, nylon line was introduced. Its elasticity was an improvement, and itsuse for mooring lines became widespread. However, the traditional heavy chains contin-ued to drag over the sea bottom, to corrode unforgivingly, and to require yearly inspec-tions.In our ongoing program to develop an ideal mooring system, the Hazelett aluminum sparbuoy was developed in 1985. The spar buoy melts ice around it in the spring and slipsbelow moving ice. Its design saves owners the expense of hauling their moorings out inthe fall just to replace them the next year and aids marinas in setting their boundaries. There are over 800 installations of the Hazelett aluminum spar buoy in fresh water. Some of them have been in place for almost 20 years. The idea for an elastic mooring system got a start in 1990 with the invention of the elas-tic rode. The initial trials had excellent results and thousands of hours of data were col-lected. Hazelett Marine is confident that we have achieved a reliable, maintenance-free

product.1

fax: (802) 863-1523 hazelettmarine.com tel: (802) 863-6376The Hazelett Maintenance-Free Elastic Mooring System was developed to allow boats to ride out stormy weatherwith more security and less wear on the components. Aconventional mooring system employs a chain to connect the anchor to the buoy. In storm conditions, chainstraightens into a rod of steel and even the elasticity of nylon line reaches the limit of its stretch. Just when you needed elasticity in your mooring system, you have run out of it.The Hazelett Elastic Mooring System offers several unique solutions. The hardest working component of theHazelett Elastic Mooring System is the Elastic Rode, or pendant. It absorbs peak loads and maintains a muchlower, steady pull. The boat stays pointed into the wind and rarely yaws in stormy weather. Under extreme loading, such as the impact of a breakaway boat or a surge in the water depth, the Elastic Rodemay elongate up to 300%. Another quality of the Elastic Rode is its long life. We recently tested seven-year-old Elastic Rodes, and they per-formed the same as they had when they were new. Each Elastic Rode is thoroughly inspected and tested at our

plant before it is made available to our customers.2THE HAZELETT ELASTIC MOORING SYSTEM

The softer polyurethane Boot fits precisely on the top grooves of the Spar Buoy. The Bootkeeps the Swivel aligned with the Pendant to allow free rotation ofthe system. For ease of inspection, the Stainless Steel Swivel isinstalled in the Pendant.3

In theoff-season, the spar buoy reduces the potential for ice to move the mooring. The Hazelett Elastic Rode has excellent abrasion resistance. It also ELIMINATES THE MAINTENANCE OFCHAIN AND OTHER METAL-TO-METALWEARING PARTS. The only portion of the Hazelett Marine ElasticMooring System that is metal-to-metal contact is the shackle connecting the rode to the anchor. To prevent wear,we have oversized that shackle. The Elastic Rode has very little buoyancy and offers little resistance when dragged over the bottom. The rode canbe floated to prevent entanglement with the anchor and to limit bottom abrasion.

We recommend a limit line for marginally protected mooring locations.4

In certain situations, 1 to 1 scope is feasible with a properlyinstalled helix, an extra heavy Dor-Mor, a granite block, or a concrete anchor. With a short scope, the verticalforces will be high until conditions stretch the Elastic Rode, which will increase the scope.Lake Champlain has the largest collection of sunken historical ships on the North American Continent.
