Commentary on Wordsworth’s Feature of Poetry

William Wordsworth is one of the most popular poets in the Romantic Period,

Wordsworth changed the course of English poetry by using ordinary speech of the

language by advocating a return to nature. Here are some features in Wordsworth’s

poetry.

First, the beauty of imagery. For example, In I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, the

poet use visual and kinaesthetic imagery. “when all at once I saw a crowd , a host , of

golden daffodials”, he use visual imagery to describe the number and colour of the

daffodils. “Fluttering and dancing in the breeze”, he use kinaesthetic imagery to

express the beheavor of the daffodils. A great number of golden daffodils is dancing in

the breeze like a fluttering. What a beautiful scene!In The Solitary Reaper,

Wordsworth use visual and auditory imagery. “Behold her, single in the field, Yon

solitary Highland Lass” and “Alone she cuts and binds grain”, the poet use visual

imagery to describe a single and solitary girl, she is cutting and binding the grain.

“And sings a melancholy strain, O Listen!”, he use auditory imagery to describe the

sad tune. Although she is singing a sad tune , the girl doesn’t feel unhappy. The use of

comparison to arouse the auditory images and to the reader the beauty of her song.

Second, the simplicity and purity of his language. For example, In I Wandered

Lonely as a Cloud, Wordsworth use lonely﹑dance and so on. They are simple than

other words like jocund. In The Solitary Reaper, the writer use single、alone﹑sing in

the poem which echoes in the poet’s mind through a meditative consciousness. It is

much simple than chaunt.

Third, the natural world. For example, In I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud , the

poet express his views on nature. “And then my heart with pleasure fills, and dance

with the daffodils”. He describes the harmonious relationship between men and nature.

He thinks that happiness is the part of nature, and the natural world is the great source

of human happiness and fulfillment. He expresses his passionate love for nature and

unutterable delight in the presence of nature.

Fourth, the growth of the poet’s mind. For example, In I Wandered Lonely as a

Cloud . At the beginning, the poet is lonely , after see the daffodils, his mood is

change. He feels happy.

Fifth, the symbolic meaning of things. For example, In I Wandered Lonely as a

Cloud , daffodils symbolize happiness. He thinks the daffodil is part of nature , it is a

beautiful thing. Through the daffodil the poet becomes happy. And In The Solitary

Reaper , “the reaper” is clearly gives us a figure of time and death. Yet the

substitution of a young women for an old man (father time ).

The last, William Wordsworth said that poetry is the spontaneous overflow of

powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.
