• Now, what is the meaning of the word “social”?
– Social in this context refers to people within groups and society.
3
SO WHAT DOES SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP MEAN?
13
Is social entrepreneurship new?
- No, the behavior of social entrepreneurship has been around almost as long as humans.
14
Even in the early days of humankind, whenever any activity to help any members of the society became an organized part of the culture, this could be called early social entrepreneurship.
18
• When these good deeds started as a part of the warrior associations, this would be an example of early social entrepreneurship. • Someone had the idea for a warring organization to start engaging in good deeds to help people within the sociaty.

Our Definition of Social Entrepreneurship
In this course, social entrepreneurship will mean: Developing and starting a program (or innovating to improve an existing program) that has the primary purpose to help people in need
25
- I would like for this class to be a part of this possible revolution to do good.
26
WHAT I BELIEVE IS INSIDE ALL OF US
• Goodness • A desire to help others • Passion to make a difference • Unbelievable energy
- I believe the time is ripe for an explosion of nongovernmental assistance to people in need.
24
- I believe there could be a social entrepreneurship revolution in the making.

BUSINESS ENTREPRENEUR VS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR
• A business entrepreneur’s primary purpose is money. • Although a social entrepreneur may need money to operate, the primary purpose for social entrepreneurs is helping people in need.

SUMMARY OF THE 3 DIFFERENCES
The 3 differences between social entrepreneurship and volunteering are: 1. Social entrepreneurs start or improve programs, but volunteers usually don’t. 2. Social entrepreneurs always innovate, but volunteers often don’t. 3. Volunteers are never paid, but social entrepreneurs are often paid.
19
In many of the more technologically developed parts of the world we can find good examples of social entrepreneurship in the 1600s and 1700s. The point is that social entrepreneurship has been around for a long, long time.
21
The French word entrepreneurship is long and cumbersome to most of us English speakers. E-n-t-r-e-p-r-e-n-e-u-r-s-h-i-p (gasp!) However, this word “captures” a meaning for which we have no English word.
27
GOODNESS
Some people engage in much harmful behavior directed toward others. Does this mean they don’t have goodness inside them? I believe we all have much goodness inside us, which is an important ingredient to becoming a social entrepreneur.
16
Right now, I’m thinking of human societies before there was finple: Some Indian tribes had warrior associations. When there was no war, some of these associations began performing good deeds.
15
As societies became more complex and began emphasizing organizations separate from the family, social entrepreneurship became more formal. - New organizations emerged that helped members of the society.
6
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP VS VOLUNTEERING
• Volunteering is often extremely important when helping people in need, but the idea of volunteering does not require that a program be built. • So social entrepreneurship is much more extensive than volunteering.
8
Another Important Difference
Another crucial difference between the meaning of volunteer and social entrepreneur is: • Social entrepreneurship always involves innovation/creativity.
10
• A volunteer may perform wonderful tasks such as helping the elderly in a nursing home or handing out food at a food pantry for the poor. • However, this would not be social entrepreneurship if there is no innovation.
22
The exciting dimension this word brings is: - taking risks and creating something of value through innovation
23
So what lies ahead in our society and world?
11
• Another important point is that social entrepreneurship can be done on a voluntary basis, but many social entrepreneurs are paid. • Volunteers are never paid. • Social entrepreneurs are often paid.
7
• Whereas volunteering could simply involve a couple hours of picking up bottles and cans along a roadside for recycling, social entrepreneurship (as used in this course) always involves the development and launching of programs (or improvement of existing programs).
