A About the year 1900, a small, dark-haired hot boy named Charles Chaplin was often seen waiting outside the back entrance of London theatres. He looked thin and hungry. He was hoping to get work in show business. He could sing and dance, above all, he knew how to make people laugh. But he couldn’t get work and so he wandered(流浪) about the city streets. Sometimes he was sent away to a home for children who had no parents. But twenty years later this same Chaplin became the greatest, best-known, and best-loved comedian(喜剧演员) in the world. Any visitor to the cinema must have seen some of Chaplin’s filmstrips. People everywhere have sat and laughed at them until the tears ran down their faces. Even people who don’t understand English can enjoy Chaplin’s films though most of them are silent. It isn’t what he says that makes us laugh. His comedy doesn’t depend upon words and languages. It depends upon little actions which mean the same thing to people all over the world. Acting out, without words, common human situations plays an important part in the dances and plays of many countries. It’s a kind of world language. B I would like to suggest that for sixty to ninety minutes each evening, right after the evening news, all TV programs in the United States should be stopped. Let’s look at what the result might be if this suggestion were accepted. Families might use the time for a real family hour. Without TV, they might sit around together after dinner and truly talk to one another. It is well know that many of out problems come out because we fail to talk with each other. By using the quiet family hour to discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better. On evening when such talk is not necessary, our families could find out more active ways to pass our time. If we were free from TV, we would be forced to find our own ways to enjoy ourselves. We might take a ride together to watch the sunset, or take a walk together and see our neighbors with fresh new eyes. With free time and no TV , children and parents might discover reading. There is more enjoyment in a good book than in a month of TV programs. It is reported that the generation(一代人)growing up with television can only write a sentence, even when they are in colleges. Writing is often learned from reading. A different form of reading might also be done, as it was in the past:reading aloud. Few pastimes(消遣)bring a family together than gathering around and listening to mother or father read a good story. The quiet hour could become the story hour. When the quiet hour ends, better TV programs might come out to get us back from our newly discovered activities. ( )5.In this passage, the writer mainly wants readers to know about . ( )7.Which of the following would NOT happen without TV programs? A.The whole family would like each other better. B.There would be fewer family problems.
