1. Zoom
o
There are a couple of team building exercises that can bring out the leader in anyone that
has those qualities and one of the more effective team building exercises is one called
Zoom. In Zoom each member of a group is given a photograph that they cannot show the
other members of the group. All the photographs are related in some way, and the group
needs to come up with a composite image based on the individual pictures. Since they
cannot show each other their pictures, each person must describe their image and the
group needs to process that information and use it to create one composite image. Zoom
is an excellent team building and leadership activity because it requires patience,
communication, and someone to step forward and coordinate all of the activity that is
going on. It can be a frustrating exercise, but if the right kind of leader emerges then Zoom
can become a very effective way to show that person's leadership skills to the group and
to the company.
What to Look For
o
A leader is someone that is able to evaluate the skills of the people around them, and then
motivate those people to use their skills to the mutual benefit of the group. A leader
knows how to listen to the people around them, and they display an aura of confidence
that motivates people to act to the best of their abilities. Leaders can be difficult to find,
but when you see a leader emerge through a team building activity then you need to
nurture those leadership qualities and put them to work for the future of your company.
Blindfold
This game from the Experiential Learning Games website will help your class get a better
understanding of the innate importance of trust in a leadership role, both from the leader
and the followers. Divide your group into two separate teams. Take one team out of the
room and blindfold them. The other team comes out and each member takes one
blindfolded person by the hand. The sighted team members are the "leaders." They will
not talk during this game. They can only use touch to move their blindfolded partners
through the room and through the task you have set up in the room. The task can be
anything you like, such as finding two different objects or moving carefully through a small
obstacle course. The followers must obey the touch commands of their leaders and trust
them to lead them in the right way. The leaders learn how important it is to use leadership
wisely. The followers realize the power of leadership. Switch teams to give everyone a
chance to try both sides. Talk about the game after you are finished.
Shape Builder
The shape builder game will really test the leadership skills of your class. Divide
your class into four-person teams. In each of these teams, one person is designated
as the "builder," another as the "leader" and the other two as "runners." The leader
is placed in a separate room. He uses building blocks to create a shape. He then
goes into the "runner" room and tells the runners how to build the shape. He can go
into as much detail as he wants. The runners never see the shape. They then go into
the "builder's" room and describe the instructions to the builder. He then attempts to
rebuild the shape described by the leader. The runners can then describe the object
to the leader and see how close the shape is to the leader's shape. The leader must
choose his commands carefully and oversee the entire project without actually
seeing the builder's shape.
