Westudytheeffectofdisorderontheeffectivemagneticresponseofcompositeleft-handedmeta-materialsandtheirspecificpropertiessuchasnegativerefraction.Weshowthatrelativelyweakdisorderinthesplit-ringresonatorscanreduceandevencompletelyeliminatethefrequencydomainwherethecompositematerialdemonstratestheleft-handedproperties.Weintroducetheconceptoftheorderparametertodescribenovelphysicsofthiseffect.

Recentlyfabricatedcompositestructures[1,2,3]open

anuniquepossibilitytostudyexperimentallytheprop-

ertiesoftheso-calledleft-handedmetamaterials[4].

Specifically,thecompositematerialscreatedbyarrays

ofwiresandsplit-ringresonators(SRRs)areknownto

possessanegativerealpartofthemagneticpermeabil-

ityandnegativedielectricpermittivityinthemicrowave

range[1,2,3],andtheydemonstratemanyunusualprop-

ertiespredictedtheoreticallylongtimeago[4],includ-

ingnegativerefraction,inverselightpressure,reverse

DopplerandVavilov-Cherenkoveffects,etc.Moreover,

manyideastocreatesuchleft-handedmetamaterialsfor

opticalfrequenciesarecurrentlyunderstudy(see,e.g.,

Ref.[5]).

Themetamaterialscreatedbyarraysofmetallicwires

andmicrowaveresonatorsaredesignedtooperateforthe

wavelengthsmuchlargerthentheperiodofthestruc-

ture,andtheirsimultaneouslynegativedielectricper-

mittivityandmagneticpermeabilityoccurinsomefi-

nitefrequencyrange.Withintheeffectivemediumap-

proximation,dielectricpermittivitybecomesnegativein

arelativelylargefrequencydomainduetoalinearre-

sponseofwires,whereasmagneticpermeabilityofthe

structurecanbecomenegativeinarelativelynarrow

frequencydomain.Itisthisspecificfrequencydomain

wheretheinducedmagneticmomentumofeachresonator

isdirectedoppositetotheexternalmagneticfieldbeing

strongenoughtoproducecollectivelynegativevaluesof

theeffectivemagneticpermeability.

InthisLetter,westudytheeffectofweakdisorder

inthestructureparametersonthemagneticresponse

ofcompositeandtheexistenceofthefrequencydomain

wherethecompositematerialexhibitsthespecificleft-

handedpropertiessuchasnegativerefraction.Weshow

thatevenrelativelysmallvariationoftheSRRparam-

eterscanresultinthedramaticdecreaseofthesizeof

theleft-handedfrequencydomainand,aboveacertain

thresholdvalue,disordercansuppressandeveneliminate

completelytheleft-handedpropertiesofthemetamate-

rial.

Westudyacompositestructuremadeofmetallicwires

andsingle-ringmicrowaveresonators,asshownschemat-

icallyinFig.1(a).Thismodelisqualitativelysimilarto

themodelofdouble-ringresonatorsusuallystudiedinthe

theoryofleft-handedcompositemedia(see,e.g.,Ref.[6]andreferencetherein).Withintheeffectivemediumap-

proximation,thedielectricpermittivityofthisstructure

canbecalculated[7,8]andpresentedintheform

Results(2)and(3)areobtainedunderthemajoras-

sumptionthatallresonatorsinthestructureareiden-

tical.Nowweconsiderthecasewhenthesizeofthe

slotdgisrandomanditischaracterizedbyastatistical

distributionfunction.Ourstudycanbemotivatedbya

numberoftherecenteffortstocreatethemetamaterials

withtheleft-handedpropertiesforshorterwavelengths

and,forthesmallerSRRsizeinthestructure,thekey

parameterswouldbedifficulttocontrolinfabrication.

Inourstructure,theparameterηdoesnotdependon

dg[seeEq.(3)],andonlytheSRReigenfrequencyω0is2

affectedbyfluctuationsofdg.Then,theequationforthemagneticsusceptibility(2)canbegeneralizedtodescribe

ThevalueΓchasthemeaningofthecriticallossesin

thecompositestructureabovewhichthedomainwith

negativevaluesofthemagneticpermeabilitydisappears,

andtherelativecriticalparameterΓc/ω0dependsonly

onthestructureofthecomposite.Takingthecharacter-

isticvaluesd=0.5cm,a=0.2cm,andr=0.05cm,we

obtainΓc/ω0=0.046.Thisresultindicatesthateven

forthecaseoflosslessresonators,i.e.γm=0,relative

fluctuationsoftheSRReigenfrequenciescannotexceed

4.6%.Accordingly,iftheslotsizeisdg=0.01cm,(then

ω0/2π=9.6GHz)thecriticalvariationcanbeestimated

as∆dg∼5µm.Existenceofsuchacriticaldistribution
