enAustralia With My Eyes
(Australia Through My Eyes)*

Sunshine and beaches, koalas and kangaroos! When asked about the
wonders of Australia, without a doubt, these are the most frequent answers.
However, for people who have been there in person, the results may be
different. Six years ago, I took part in a summer camp and spent one month
in Australia. That trip showed me the real Australia. A country that possesses
attractive natural scenery, profound cultures and an harmonious social
environment. Here is Australia with my eyes.
The first thing that impressed me was the combination of cultures. As is
widely known, Australia is a country with a lot of immigrants. My host
family was a good example, the host was a Malaysian born Chinese, while
the hostess was British. This kind of family is quite common in Australia
and it makes this country a melting pot of various cultures. However, in the
process of cultural integration, Australians never leave their native culture
behind. From the special art they create to their own unique lifestyle,
aboriginal culture is an important part of Australia.
Second, Australia is a real land of fancy where amazing things happen. As
far as I know, Kevin Rudd, the ex-Prime Minister of Australia is the only
leader of a western country who can conduct an interview completely in
Chinese. That, to some extent, can serve as a sign of the friendship between
China and Australia. In Australia, there is no clear boundary between nature
and human society. Kangaroos and hares can even take a walk on a highway.
Respecting the relationship between nature and human society has long been
a thorny problem, and Australia solved it quite well.
The last two things that I mentioned may seem insignificant, but from my
point of view, small details are the best indicators of greatness. Through
those inconspicuous points, Australia demonstrates her magnificence and
amiability to the whole world. So, with my eyes, Australia is a place where
you can find surprises everywhere.

* It is better English to use “through” my eyes, than to use “with” my eyes,
but I understand that this is the topic you were given. So use the one you
think the Judges prefer.
