Holiday Fun for Everyone

In China, the Spring Festival is the most important celebration of the year. Holiday celebrations take many forms; it can be a time to be merry, to exercise, to learn and to reflect. We take a look at how some Chinese people spend the holiday. Ask anyone about their Spring Festival plans, and the same place will always pop up.

Temple fairs have been an integral part of Spring Festival rituals for many generations. While the general idea is to have fun and deliver silent prayers, there are various ways to accomplish this.

People throw coins to strike a lucky bell or patiently join a zigzagging queue to touch a lucky zodiac animal on the wall. They are all asking for blessings.

If you don’t like the cold winter weather, indoor temple fairs offer a cozy atmosphere to stroll around. Booths are set up selling everything from desserts to decorations. Toys in the shape of an ox are in hot demand.

Elderly people like to sit down with a cup of tea, and tap their fingers to the rhythms of a Peking Opera performance. The Laoshe Tea House in downtown Beijing is doing a bustling trade, not to be overshadowed by temple fairs.

B ut for the adventurous type, it’s time to set out.

With the global economic downturn eating into travel package prices and fuel surcharges suspended on domestic flights, this Spring Festival is a great time to travel in China or abroad. Travel agencies say airfare prices to foreign destinations have dropped thirty percent, with the Maldives, Bali, Saipan all hot destinations.

While some people are heading to the beach, others are hitting the slopes. Seeking an adrenalin rush, more and more Chinese people are taking up skiing. The sport requires a lot of energy, so does a class of fencing or taekwondo.

After a Spring Festival feast, it may be time to burn a few calories. Hitting the gym is the choice for many commuters, who struggle to find time on workdays to work up a sweat.

The new year hoopla is taking a quiet and elegant turn at an ongoing exhibition at the National Art Museum of China. The Chinese Folk Arts and Crafts show gives a mind-boggling look at the country’s exquisite craftsmanship.

Coveri ng all nine halls of the museum’s first floor are 350 objects chosen from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions on the Chinese mainland. Visitors receive more than a lesson on art. Each work comes with its own history to tell. This is the first ever exhibition of Chinese fol k arts and crafts in the museum’s 46-year-history. The exhibition gives an insight into less well known traditions, and runs into early February.

Browsing for the latest releases at book fairs and in bookstores is another popular way to spend free time over the holiday.

With so many options around, the question now is: How will YOU spend the holidays?

Spring Festival in My Eyes

The Spring Festival is a traditional Chinese festival and also the most important one of the whole year. Through the evolvement of thousands of years, a series of traditional customs are spreading far and wide. “Sweeping the dus t” before the Spring Festival means a thorough cleaning of houses to sweep away bad luck in the past year. Many people like to paste “Spring Couplets”and paper-cuts to give a happy and prosperous atmosphere of the Festival and express the good wishes of Chinese people looking forward to a good life. On the first day of lunar New Year, people give New Year’s greetings to each other. With the development of the new technology, it is common to send New Year’s greetings by such modern means of communication as telephones, emails and SMS. In recent years, it is popular for people to travel abroad and in China during the holiday. Many young people prefer to take up skiing, fencing, taekwondo and other sports to work up a sweat. Browsing for the latest releases in the bookstores is another popular way to spend free time over the holiday.

As for me, I find myself looking forward more and more to school after the Spring Festival. For one thing, the Spring Festival is always a big distraction, and for days before and after nobody can get any work done. Now I find myself enjoying it less and less. I stopped enjoying fireworks and firecrackers years ago. The firecrackers especially get on my nerves. I really think we should stop making them, as every year many children have their eyes hurt or even blinded. Even worse, sometimes fires are started and whole buildings get burned down. When it comes to food, people

spend days queuing and buying them, such as chicken, duck, fish, pork, beef, mutton—name what you will. The result is too much. Too rich food does nobody any good. It’s all right for a few really good friends to get together and chat over some tea or drinks. But mere acquaintances and the usually not too neighborly neighbors dropping in to say hello—well, I suppose these are well-intended gestures, but I find them a pain in the neck(讨厌的任务). No wonder parents are looking very tired and find the whole thing a strain. Maybe only the little children are still immersed in their happiness which comes from gift money and no homework everyday. When changes in life happen, we all miss the old good days.

Task 2

In task 2, students will watch a video clip about Christmas and then do the exercises as required. Before watching, students are supposed to read the words, expressions and cultural notes related to the video.

Do You Celebrate Christmas?

CNN’s Bill Schneider reports on a poll that looks at people who celebrate the Christmas holiday.

Americans are divided over many religious issues, but Christmas is not one of them. In a CNN poll conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation, 94% of Americans say they celebrate Christmas; nearly three quarters send Christmas cards and have a Christmas tree in their home. Oh, well, people do that for the kids? Nope, more than seventy percent of Americans who have no children at home put up a Christmas tree. Religious people, right? Nope. Even Americans who rarely go to church put up a Christmas tr ee. But what kind of tree? That’s where things are changing. Ten years ago, a third of Americans put up a real tree. Now that number is down to twenty two percent. Today most Americans use art ificial trees. Maybe because it’s cheaper than buying a new tree every year; maybe because it is safer; maybe because people are more environmentally conscious, or maybe it is just easier. Putting up Christmas lights is not easy. But nearly six in ten Americans do it including this woman in Los Angeles who happens to be Jewish.

“I don’t think Santa Claus and talking snowman and flying reindeer and candy-cane trees have any religious significance at all.”

She happens to live in an orthodox Jewish neighborhood. Are her neighbors offended? Some are, others are not.

“I am not an orthodox Jew, (Okay) and I think it’s unusual that Merry puts on, but you know, it is ok, d oesn’t faze me. I think it’s pretty.”

Christmas is less and less likely to divide churchgoers and non churchgoers, people with and without kids, even Christians and non-Christians. They can all agree on one thing: it is pretty.

Bill Schneider, CNN, Los Angeles.

Mid-Autumn Festival

On 25th September this year, people all over China will be getting together to eat with their families, look at the moon and celebrate one of the biggest festivals in the Chinese lunar calendar. However, the celebrations stretch far beyond the borders of China. Here in the UK events are

taking place for Chinese people living here, and to teach the people of Britain more about this popular festival.

The Soho Theatre in London conducted a study which sh owed that Chinese Londoners don’t engage much with the arts world. As a result, Moon Walking in China has been created to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

This is no normal theatre production though, as it doesn’t take place in the theatre. Theatre professionals and volunteers from the local community will take audiences around the streets of Soho on a magical lantern-lit walk through the landmarks and backstreets of Chinatown.

They tell the story of three generations of Chinese Londoners who all cross paths one night in Chinatown. Rabbits, karaoke and a woman who lives on the moon all feature prominently.

It’s the Soho Theatre’s first site-specific production and looks to be a unique way of marking the famous Chinese festival.

And the celebrations don’t stop there! In early October the British Museum is actually opening late for a special free Mid-Autumn Festival event. There will be Chinese musical performances, a guess-the-mooncake-flavour game and you can learn how to perform a fan dance.

You can also try your hand at a variety of other traditional Chinese arts and crafts, as well as learning Mandarin and learning more about the history of China.

The Chinese population in the UK is quite large, so no doubt there will be events happening not only in the capital, but all around the country.

However you are celebrating, we hope you have fun. Happy mid-Autumn festival from everyone at BBC Learning English!

Thanksgiving: Filled with Family Traditions and Food

VOICE ONE:

Welcome to THIS IS AMERICA in VOA Special English. I’m Barber Cline.

VOICE TWO:

And I’m Steve Ember. Our subject this week is what the writer O. Henry called the one day that is purely American—Thanksgiving.

(MUSIC)

VOICE ONE:

This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. This is the 143rd official observance of the holiday. But the tradition is much older. Thanksgiving is an autumn harvest festival like those found in many cultures.

Today the holiday is a time of family reunions, parades and watching football games on television. And, oh yes, food. For millions of Americans, Thanksgiving is a day spent cooking, eating and talking.

VOICE TWO:

Thanksgiving is what the social scientists call a civil holiday. It is not religious but it does have spiritual meaning. For some families, Thanksgiving may be the only time of year when everyone gets together. The government says the Sunday after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for long-distance travel as people return from gatherings.

(MUSIC)

VOICE ONE:

Now we come to the part of the holiday that Thanksgiving memories are often made of -- the big Thanksgiving Day meal. Some families serve ham. Others serve a meatless dinner. But the traditional main dish is turkey. Most people cook the bird in an oven; some prepare the turkey other ways, like fried in oil.

Turkey on Thanksgiving is usually served with a bread mixture inside. Some Americans call it stuffing; others call it dressing. Popular side dishes on Thanksgiving include cranberries, sweet potatoes and green beans. Then for a rich, sweet dessert there is often pumpkin pie or pecan pie. Many Thanksgiving tables also are heavy with other dishes, often brought by guests. And if the guests eat all that is served, they too will feel heavy.

Some people like fruit soup, green salads and baked potatoes with their turkey. Others like baked squash, creamed onions, creamed spinach and corn pudding. Many people eat more at Thanksgiving than any other time of the year.

VOICE TWO:

For people who do not have much food or a home to go to at Thanksgiving, charity groups play an important part. To help the needy, religious and service organizations across the country serve special Thanksgiving meals.

Reference for the Illustration

Thanksgiving Day was first celebrated in colonial times in New England. When the Pilgrims landed their ships at Plymouth Rock in the year 1621, they needed the help of the neighboring Native Americans to learn how to plant crops and grow food. After they had completed their first

harvest, the Pilgrims had a feast with the Indians to celebrate their friendships. This was called “The First Thanksgiving”. It is still celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November, usually with a feast of turkey, stuffing, corn, potatoes and apple pie. It is a time for each person to think of what and who they are thankful for.

“Summer Work/Travel” Brings Many Students to US

This is the VOA Special English Education Report.

This week, we answer a question from a student in Odessa, Ukraine. Marushka wants to know about a program that lets foreign students work in the United States during their summer vacations.

The program is called Summer Work/Travel. The State Department administers it for full-time college or university students who speak English well.

Students come on a J—1 exchange visa. They can work for up to four months during their school break. They generally work in service jobs in stores, resorts, hotels, restaurants and amusement parks. But summer internships are also permitted.

“Summer”in this case means summer i n the student’s country. Those from south of the equator come to the United States during the northern winter.

Students cannot work as housekeepers in private homes or be involved in patient care. And they are supposed to be paid the same as Americans.

Congress created this popular program under a nineteen sixty-one law, the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act. Last year, one hundred fifty thousand students came to the United States this way.

Students can do the Summer Work/Travel program more than once.

Sally Lawrence heads the State Department office responsible for the program. She says students should begin to gather information a year before they want to travel.

More than fifty organizations are approved to act as sponsors. Sally Lawrence advises students to avoid unapproved groups offering services, and to research a few different sponsors.

Sponsors must confirm the English language ability of students and make sure they are currently in school. But sponsors do not all charge the same price for their services.

Another difference: some sponsors arrange employment and housing for students before they leave home. Others permit students to find their own jobs after they arrive.

Sally Lawrence says the first thing to do is to find the list of sponsors on the Web page for J visa exchange programs.

The address is a little long, but here it is: https://www.doczj.com/doc/ed4100425.html,/education/jexchanges. Click on Designated Sponsor List, then choose Summer Work/Travel under Category Description. For more information about the program, go to the main page and click on Private Sector Programs.

To make it easier, we’ll post a link at https://www.doczj.com/doc/ed4100425.html,. And that’s the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy Steinbach. I’m Steve Ember.

Part III Oral Practice

In this part, students will have 3 tasks to accomplish.

Task 1 Picture Description

Students are asked to describe the given pictures.

Sample (omitted)

Reference for the Descriptions

1.Pure Brightness / Tomb Sweeping Day

Qing Ming (Pure Brightness) is a traditional festival highlighted by worship at ancestral graves. Usually it falls between April 4~6. At this time people also customarily make offerings to family ancestors, go outings and flying kites. Following tradition, people pay their respects to their ancestors by sweeping tombs. Today this festival is also a memorial day for revolutionary martyrs. People from government offices, schools and other social organizations visit public cemeteries and express their esteem by placing a bouquet of flowers, a bunch of budding willow branches or a wreath of cypress and pine on the tomb of a martyr.

2. Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Festival, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is a traditional Chinese festival dedicated to the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan for his devotion to his native state. Local people honor the memory of Qu Yuan on this day by holding dragon-boat races. It is said that the boat races were regarded as a symbol of the people’s attempt to rescue Qu Yuan. It is a tradition to eat zongzi, pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, with different fillings added for interest. According to one popular story, such dumplings were thrown into the river as food for the fish and shrimp to keep them from eating QuYuan’s body.

3. Double Ninth Festival

The traditional Double Ninth festival is on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. The typical activity is to climb mountains. Autumn is the best season to climb mountains, as the weather is pleasant, the sky clear and the air crisp. People enjoy the fresh air and warm sunshine. As a pastime, mountain climbing is good for keeping fit. Chrysanthemums are in full bloom in autumn. Chrysanthemum shows are usually held in big cities across China and attract numerous visitors, because the chrysanthemum is regarded as the “gentleman” of flowers.Recently the Double Ninth Festival has been given another title, the Festival of Respect for the Aged.

4. Saint Valentine’s Day

Saint Valentine’s Day is a day to promote the idea of love. It is celebrated on February 14th. People send greeting cards, roses, chocolate or other gifts to loved ones and friends to show them that they care.

5.Easter Day

Easter Day occurs on the first Sunday after the full moon following the spring equinox(春分). Its origin is related to religion. It is the day to commemorate(纪念)the

Resurrection of Jesus Christ. On Easter Sunday children wake up to find that the Easter Bunny has left them baskets of candy. Children hunt for the eggs all around the house.

Neighborhoods and organizations hold Easter egg hunts, and the child who finds the most eggs wins a prize. The Easter Bunny is a rabbit-spirit which becomes a symbol of fertility.

Christians consider eggs t o be “the seed of life” and so they are symbolic of the resurrection of Jesus Christ

6. Halloween Day

Halloween day means “holy evening”. It comes every October 31. Now it is a holiday for children mainly. Every autumn, when the vegetables are ready to eat, children pick large orange pumpkins. Then they cut faces in the pumpkins and put a burning candle inside. It looks as if there were a person looking out of the pumpkin! These lights are called jack-o’-lanterns, which mean “Jack of the lantern”. The children also put on strange masks and frightening costumes every Halloween. Then they carry boxes or bags from house to house. Every time they come to

a new house, they say, “Trick or treat! Money or eat!” The grown-ups put treat-money or candy

in their bags. Most grown-ups can disguise themselves as ghosts. This brings them the satisfaction of being young.

Task 2 Role Play

Students are asked to perform a role-play with their partner. Choose two pictures from section 2 and make dialogues. Suppose one of them is an American, and the other is a Chinese. The Chinese introduces the traditional Chinese festivals to the American and vice versa.

Sample(omitted)

Task 3 Oral Presentation

There are 2 topics for students to discuss in groups. Students can focus on any one topic to make an oral presentation in front of class.

Reference for Oral Presentation

Topic 1 traditional Chinese festivals vs. foreign festivals

The first opinion: Today is Chinese Va lentine’s Day. But few people are to celebrate it in our university. And obviously foreign Valentine’s Day is more popular than our Chinese Valentine’s Day among the youth. Indeed, it is a pity for Chinese youth not to remember our native festivals but to celebrate the foreign ones. For some people, all things related to foreign seem to be advanced, noble and modern. As we all know, every year when Christmas Day, and Valentine’s Day are around the corner, numerous decorations and presents are filled in nearly every shop and mall. Young people make full preparations to welcome them. I can’t figure out why it is. We, youth, a new generation, should know that our tradition is long and unique, which deserves to be

cherished and preserved. It is our responsibility to protect our old traditions.

The second opinion: Foreign festivals in China today are celebrated for fun. They give people occasions to relax and celebrate, to show appreciation and gratefulness. The acceptance of foreign festivals generally depends on China’s opening to the outside world and people’s familiarity with the western culture, most importantly, on the rising of people’s financial status. So, the critics really do not have to worry about celebrating foreign festivals. Some people in China are celebrating foreign festivals for merely fun and curiosity.

Topic 2 significance of festivals

Yes, I agree that festivals are important events in a year. The importance of festivals lies in two aspects. For the country, it’s a time to remember our cultural origin and our distinguished history. The whole country celebrates our root and it’s very inspiring. We become so proud of our tradition. It is also a chance to preserve and promote our tradition—the priceless heritage of our ancestors. As to the individual, festivals give us a chance for relaxation as we often have a few days off. It’s a time for fun, meeting friends and entertainment. So after that we feel refreshed. In a sense, holidays restore our balance between work and leisure. Maybe that’s also why we need festivals.

Time for Fun

Enjoy a flash about the Spring Festival.
