A book report of Animal Farm
First of all, I’d like to say this is a great critical novel. The story is very short, but it contains profound meanings.
The story in this novel goes like this: Animals on the Manor Farm rebelled against Mr. Jones and won the farm. They had planned to build the farm on the basis that every animal was equal. But with time passed by, pigs took the priority to other animals and concentrated the power into their hand. At length, they even took up human behaviors which had been attacked before. Therefore, the Animal Farm went back to the time when it was owned by Mr. Jones.
After finishing the book, I searched online to get some background information about the book. I found that some people said that in some ways this book had alluded to the history of Soviet Union and the international communist movement. Some people even said that it had perfectly predicted the path of the history. I don’t know whether they are right and I have no methods to prove these guesses. But I do think what the novel talks about has something to with politics.
Once the whole power is in a certain one’s hand, inequality and injustice are bound to exist. The hierarch is bound to abuse the power to seek profits for himself. The community will sink into a troublous and unstable state. Centralization is never a good choice for politicians.
Now I’d like to give my comments on some of the characters in the
novel.
Snowball and Napoleon are two leaders and politicians on the farm. There exists conflicts between them, and Napoleon wants to take the place of Snowball and be a dictator. I can not say that Snowball is better than Napoleon because they are both politicians who always think about themselves first, which can be proved by the case in the novel where they claimed that the apples and the milk should be stored for the pigs because they need to stay healthy to make guides for other animals. But I can say that Napoleon is too viperous. He took away puppies and trained them to be his guard. He had plotted to drive Snowball away and built a traitor image for Snowball. At last he even allied with human beings and behaved like them. And he used tyranny to suppress the counterview of other animals.
Boxer is a hard-working horse who works hard than any other animals on the farm. In order to finish building the windmill on time, he volunteered to get up earlier and worked on the construction site. He is loyal, however, his loyalty is blind. He does not have enough intelligence to distinguish. In the end, when he lost his value, he was sold by Napoleon to slaughterhouse and only got a tragic ending. I feel very sorry for him.
Squealer reminds me of the image of a sly persuasive talker and speechmaker. He can make black white. What he did is just one thing,
that’s to dupe the animals. I really hate such kind of person.
Mollie is a mare adoring vanity. She only cares about her own interests and only wants to lead a easy and cozy life, so she fled from the farm.
The writer just stopped at the plot where pigs and human beings became similar to each other. I wonder how the story will go on if he keeps writing. Will there be another rebellion? Will humans pretend to cooperate with pigs but in secret plan to plunder the farm? There are many kinds of possibilities.
I enjoy reading this novel a lot because every time I read it, I can feel the writer’s sarcastic humor. Even though I may not find something new, it’s still worth reading because the novel is thought-provoking and makes me reflect.。
