1. OBJECTIVE This document resulting from the work of the reflection group led by the DGCCRF, combining competent laboratoriesin the field of materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, representatives ofmaterials industries, processors, food industries and retailers, is tospecify the procedures for verifying suitability for food contact of metals and alloysfor this purpose. This document and records that are distributable and are published on the website DGCCRF, in the space dedicated to materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs: http://www.economie.gouv.fr/dgccrf/Materiaux-au-contact-des-denrees-alimentaires 2- SCOPE The schedule for the metals and alloys intended to come into contact with foodstuffs that component document are to: - Laboratories working in the analysis of materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffsfood; - The manufacturing industries of materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs; - Distributors of these materials; - The food industry using such materials; - Official control services of the DGCCRF. 3- DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS SPECIFIC Not applicable 4- CONTENT Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 of 27 October 2004 states that materials and articles set, intended to be placedor which may reasonably be expected to be brought in contact with food must be inert vis-a-vis thereof. Application of this regulation texts define, for certain categories of materials, rules(composition, purity criteria, etc.) to ensure suitability for food contact. Thus thespecific guidance, as in the field of ceramics or regenerated cellulose film,or regulations, such as in the field of plastics or active or intelligent materials wereadopted. Moreover, in the absence of specific text applicable at the level of the European Union to a type of material, national regulations apply, such as those relating to stainless steel, aluminum and itsalloys, rubber or silicone elastomers. However, a number of materials are not yet subject to specific regulations, eitherat EU or national level, or are regulated incompletely. Such is the case of metals and alloys, which are the subject of several Community provisions in Regulation(EC) No 1895/2005 of 18 November 2005 concerning the use of certain epoxy derivatives inmaterials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, but not fullyregulated by a specific text. To overcome these difficulties, the DGCCRF together the relevant laboratories in the field of materials contact the representatives of the materials industries, processors, and food industriesdistributors within a working group called "think tank on regulations and the terms ofcontrol the inertia of materials for food contact ".As part of this group, cards are developed for different types of materials to clarify procedures for verifying their suitability for food contact. The schedule for the metals and alloys intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, attached toherein, are derived from the work of this group.
