Butterfly Jungle
by Matthew Gilbert, age 14
Last month, there was a competition at my school. I won it and spent a day at Butterfly Jungle. This is a new exhibition in the Natural History Museum where visitors can see butterflies of the rainforest in their natural environment.
Luke Brown, the manager, was waiting for me outside the museum entrance and took me inside to see Butterfly Jungle. It was really hot and wet in there – it was like a real rainforest. It felt great. The butterflies were flying everywhere – onto my face and my clothes. I helped Luke to clean their food table and put out fruit for them to eat among the trees and plants.
After that, Luke took me to a room that only museum staff can enter. It had boxes full of beautiful things called chrysalises, in all sizes and colours. Each one had a tiny butterfly inside and I was able to watch them being born, which was really cool! I didn’t know that many butterflies only live for three to six weeks. Each week, Luke has to put around 300 new butterflies into Butterfly Jungle.
I’ll never forget my day there. I’d love to have Luke’s job when I’m older.
