Should Old Building be Preserved? 1

In recent years, many old buildings in cities are pulled down and replaced by new ones for the

needs of development. This has aroused people’s heat discussion about whether these old

buildings should be preserved or not. Some people think that we should preserve old buildings for

its spiritual value. While others are not agreed with that opinion. As far as I’m concerned, I

support the latter viewpoint and my reasons go as followings.

Preserving old buildings is an obstacle of development. Times flowing on and society keeping

changing and developing, the issue of urbanization was put. Urbanization and citizen means

changing, innovation and developing. It’s no dout that urbanization shall be configurated with

modern constructions. Just image a picture that there are all modern, bright skyscrapers surround

an old, dull and small tile-roof house. Is it beautiful? Obviously not. In such case, old building has

nothing helpful except for producing a bad image of the city, just like a patch to a worn clothe. It’s

unsuitable and unmatchable. A business street may not be achieved because of one or two left

antiquated buildings. Developing is the rhyme of society. Those can’t change to adapt to

development and those do not develop itself at all will vanish one day. It’s the principle of nature.

So it does with the old buildings. Some may argue that old buildings are the classical architecture

of the past. But the classical is a matter of time. Today’s modern architecture will also become

classical in the future. Old building contributed to the past however it does not help for today’s

prosperity. It is the modern building that does!

Old buildings are incomparable with modern ones. Generally, modern constructions are

floor-buildings that range from several floors to hundreds, which can contain a lots of families or

working places. That means modern buildings can hold more people in the same squares than old

ones. This is of significant importance for our country, a nation of large population within limited

space. Secondly, with parking lot, modern furniture and garden in residential area, modern

constructions are surely more convenient, more comfortable and healthier for people to live in.

However, after years of exposure to sun and rain, old buildings contain insecurity elements for

people to live in. You may worry that if they could sustain a strong storm and then continue

providing shelter. If you insist on preserving them, of cause you have to repair now and then. The

rehabilitation and maintenance is too-time-consuming and uneconomic. And, if you lack high

technique, you can’t make it the original one, thus losing its value. If so, it’s better to replace them

with modern buildings.

To sum up, compared with modern buildings, old buildings have shortages and disadvantages

no matter for developing or living condition. Therefore, there’s no need to preserve the old

buildings.
