Subject: Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico!
Hello again,
We‘re on holiday! My family won a prize –tickets for a round-world-trip on the Freedom of the Seas! Can you believe it? This is one of the biggest cruise ships in the world –it‘s huge! It‘s as long as 37 buses and can carry more than 4,000 passengers. That‘s a lot of people!
You know that I like to be very active, so at first I thought this cruise was going to be a little boring … I was so wrong! The ship has an ice-skating rink, an outdoor climbing wall (more than 13 metres high), two swimming pools, a water park and even a boxing ring. But best of all …the Flowrider! It‘s a surfing attraction at the top of the ship. I tried it yesterday but I kept falling! I must try again this afternoon.
Mom and Dad were also pretty impressed by the shopping mall on the ship. You‘ve really got to see this wonderful ship –it‘s truly spectacular. I‘ll write again w hen I get home (Sunday) and tell you more about the cruise.
Bye!
Anne

―When can I get a cell phone?‖ The answer is when your parents think you need one, though many kids seem to be getting them around age 12 or 13. Some younger kids may have them because their parents see it as a matter of safety and convenience. For example, a kid can call mom and dad when sports practice is over. And a cell phone can give kids almost instant access(快捷通道) to their parents if something goes wrong or they need help. It can give parents quick access to their kids so they can check on them and make sure they‘re OK.
If you do get a cell phone, make some rules with your parents, such as how many minutes you‘re allowed to spend on the phone, when you can use your phone, when the phone must be turned off, and what you will do if someone calls you too often, and so on. You‘ll also have to learn to take care of the phone in your life. Keep it charged(充电) and sto re it in the safe place so it doesn‘t get lost. And whatever you do, don‘t use it in the bathroom. I know someone who dropped her phone in the toilet!

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following guides.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. It is about twice of the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when there is a fire. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement(水泥) might end in injury. Bushes(灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall.

I left secondary school in New Zealand when I was 17 years old. I had no idea what to do with my life. In Western countries, many students like to take a ‗gap year‘. This lets a student travel a nd work before they begin university. Some people think that it is a good idea, as the students can see more of the world around them to help them decide what they want to do.
So I decided to take a gap year too. I travelled around New Zealand with my friends. We lived in Queenstown for the winter. It is very famous for its mountains and winter snow. My friends and I went snowboarding every day! We also did a lot of other outdoor activities, such as hiking.

One of my mother‘s friends was a schoolteacher. She said I should do that. I didn‘t know if I could control a class. But as I thought more and more about it, I started to like the idea. I applied to the University of Auckland and was accepted to do an education degree.
Halfway through my degree, I visited Hong Kong during my summer holidays. I was amazed by how busy it is, and how hard everyone works. Information is stored in different parts of your memory. Information stored in the short-term memory may include the name of a person you met moments ago. Information stored in the recent memory may include what you ate for breakfast. Information stored in the long-term memory includes things that you stored in your memory years ago, such as memories of childhood.
Aging can affect memory. When you‘re in your 20s, you begin to lose brain cells (细胞) a few at a time. Your body also starts to make less of the chemicals that your brain cells need to work. The older you are, the more these changes can affect your memory.
Your short-term and long-term memories aren‘t usually affected by aging, but your recent memory may be affected. You may forget names of people you‘ve met recently. These are normal changes. Many other things besides aging can cause memory problems, including dementia (痴呆), other illnesses, side effects of drugs, a head injury or much alcohol.
A memory problem is serious when it affects your daily life. If you sometimes forget names, you‘re probably okay. But you may have more serious problem if you have trouble rememb ering how to do things you‘ve done many times before.
The difference between normal memory problems and dementia is that normal memory loss doesn‘t get much worse over time. Dementia gets much worse over several months to several years. It may be hard to figure out on your own if you have a serious problem. You should talk to your family doctor about any concerns you have. Your doctor may be able to help you if your memory problems are caused by a medicine you‘re taking or by depression.

The yo-yo was first played in China, around three thousand years ago. The same principles of the hobby are found in the performances of acrobats in modern China, where they spin pieces of wood on a string.

In Philippines, around five hundred years ago, hunters threw rocks at wild animals to try to kill them. Each rock was attached to a string, which the hunter would pull to get the rock back. The name―yo-yo‖comes from the Philippines. It means―come-come‖.
Yo-yos were also known in India, as shown by a picture on a small box that was produced in 1765; in France, where a painting of 1789 shows a small prince playing with a yo-yo; in England, where a drawing dating back to 1791 shows members of the royal family playing with yo-yos; and in the USA in the 1860s, where records of new inventions include a yo-yo with weights around the discs. Sunday evening, October 30, 1938, was peaceful in New York City. Some people were returning home from a trip to the countryside, and others were sitting down to dinner. In those days, televisions were not very common. Most people listened to the radio for news and entertainment.
At eight o‘clock that evening, there was a concert of dance music, but suddenly, the programme was interrupted with a news bulletin: a large spaceship had landed in a field and an army of Martians was moving towards New York City… and then the radio went silent.
People panicked. Some drove out of the city as quickly as possible, but soon the roads were jammed with cars. Many people were so frightened that they did not hear the next announcement on the radio: ―Ladies and gentlemen, you are listening to a radio play, called The War of the World.‖
A message was sent to police stations that there was no real Martian attack, and the police officers soon restored calm to New York City.

Dear Auntie Alice
Please help me! I have a terrible problem at school. This year, my class chose me to be the monitoress. At first, I was really excited to have been chosen. I thought I must be popular. I liked the new monitor, Charlie, as well. He h as a funny face and he‘s very hard-working.
My best friend, Sally, was also happy for me. She said the last monitoress, Joey, had been unfair to her. She always talked about it. Actually, she talked about Joey a lot. I usually ignored it.
Charlie and I have to stay behind after school to make sure that the classroom is clean. I came back before Charlie last Thursday. I found Sally-- my best friend-- at Joey‘s desk. She was cutting up Joey‘s English textbook. I was shocked. Sally asked me not to tell anyone. She wanted revenge for Joey being unfair to her. Sally ran out when Charlie ran in.
Charlie saw the book and soon realized what had happened. He asked me what I had seen but I said nothing. The next day, Joey was crying. Her parents are poor and she can‘t afford to buy a new one. She is scared to tell our teacher because he may think that she did it. Sally is happy about this. She thinks she got away with it. This makes me a little angry. Charlie insists that I tell our English teacher about what Sally ha s done by Monday. I‘m afraid that if I tell, she‘ll have to leave the school and I‘ll lose my best friend.

All living things on the earth need other living things to live. Nothing lives alone. Most animals must live in a group, and even a plant grows close together with others of the same kind. Sometimes one living thing kills another, one eats and the other is eaten. Each kind of life eats another kind of life in order to live, and together they form a food chain(链条). Some food chains are simple, while others are not. But all food chains begin with the sun, and all food chains become broken up if one of the links disappears.
All life needs sunlight to live on. But only plants can use sunlight directly. Plants are "factories". They make food from sunlight, water and things in the soil and air. Plants feed all other living things. Animals can only use the sun‘s energy after it has been changed in to food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.
What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat rice, vegetables, and fruits and so on. We also eat meat and drink milk. But men often break up the food chains. They kill wild animals. They also make rivers, lakes and seas polluted, when these rivers, lakes and seas are polluted, the fish in them can not be eaten. If men eat the fish, they will get strange diseases.
Each form of life is linked to all others. Breaking the links puts all life in danger.

One of the things I always believe is that no matter how bad something is, you can take something positive out of it. The one time I wasn't sure of that was on September 11.
I usually wake up at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning. That day, I happened to wake up earlier. I turned on the TV and I saw that a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. My first reaction was that it was a terrible accident. Then I saw another plane fly into the South Tower and I realized that I was witnessing an act of terrorism(目击恐怖袭击).
My wife and I spent the day watching the terrible pictures over and over again. When I watched family members looking for their loved ones, the pain in their eyes was something I would never forget. I couldn't understand how something this terrible could have happened.
It wasn't until a few weeks after September 11 that I began to see that perhaps some good did come from this tragedy(悲剧). People seem different now, more understanding, more tolerant(宽容的). Little things that seemed to be such a trouble before are no longer big things. Personally, I am more tolerant than I was. I realize life is too short to let myself get worried over small things.
People go to work and don't come back. One moment they're living and the next minute they're not. And, it doesn't matter who you are, there is nothing you can do about it. We never know when our time here will be over, so we all need to make the most of every minute we have.
You try to learn from what happened. You can't be used up by it. You can't live by it. All you can do is just live.
