Unit 6 FootballAncient: 1) belonging to the very distant past and no longer in existence 古代的2) having been in existence for a very long time 古老的常用词组: the Ancient of Days （《圣经》中一种称呼）上帝, 神an ancient city 古城the ancients (尤指古罗马或古希腊的）古人, 作家们ancient times 古代Kick: strike or propel forcibly with the foot 踢eg: He kicked the door open. 他把门踢开了。

常用词组: a kick in the teeth 重大挫折，失望kick against the pricks以卵击石；螳臂挡车；自讨苦吃kick someone in the teeth 使某人受到重大挫折；让人失望a death-bed [dying, last] kick垂死挣扎kick someone when they are down 落井下石，雪上加霜kick someone upstairs 明升暗降kick sb. downstairs 把某人踢下楼; 赶走; 把某人降职Defend: 1) protect from harm or danger保卫，保护2) (in sport) protect one's goal or wicket rather than attempt to score against one's opponents(体育用语)防守[同义词]: 都含“保护”、“使安全”的意思。

defend指“保卫”、“防御”,应用范围很广,对象可以是具体的,也可以是抽象的,guard 指“注意观察、戒备, 以免受可能的攻击或伤害”, 如:guard a coastline守卫海岸线。

protect 指“保护...以免遭受危险或伤害等”, 如:protect the children from harm保护儿童免受伤害。

shield 指“保护,保卫...免受惩罚或伤害等”,如:shield one's eyes against the glare of the sun保护眼睛不受强烈的阳光伤害preserve 指“防护、保存...免被分解或腐烂”, 如:Salt preserves food from decay.盐能防止食物腐烂。

Vanish: 1) disappear suddenly and completely 突然不见;消失2) disappear over a period of time 逐渐消失Eg: Emily vanished without trace. 艾米丽消失得无影无踪。

permit 和allow 在许多情况下可以通用, 但它较allow 正式, 含有“积极地、从正面地允许”的意义, allow 指“并不反对”或“不加阻止”, 偏重“默许”或“听任”, 含义较消极let 是最不正式的, 较口语化, 而语意最弱, 指“给予可能或同意”, 有时含“难以阻止或限制”之意Entertain: 1) provide (someone) with amusement or enjoyment使娱乐，使快乐2) receive (someone) as a guest and provide them with food and drink招待，款待Dictator: a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained power by force独裁者Eg: A dictator must have a firm hand. 独裁者的手段是很厉害的。
