By far the most common difficulty in studying is simple failure to get down to regular concentrated

work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan and have no regular routine

of study. Many students muddle along (得过且过), doing a bit of this subject or that as the mood

takes them, or letting their set work pile up until the last possible moment.

Few students work to a set timetable. They say that if they did construct a timetable for themselves

they would not keep to it, or would have to change it frequently, since they can never predict from

one day to the next what their activities will be.

No doubt some students take much more kindly to a regular routine than others. There are many

who are shy away from a self-controlled weekly timetable and who dislike being tied down to a

fixed program of work. However, many able students claim that they work in cycles. When they

become interested in a topic, they work on it intensively for three or four days at a time. On other

days, they avoid work completely. It has to be admitted that we do not fully understand the

motivation to work. Most people over 25 years old have been used to a work routine, and the

majority of really productive workers set aside regular hours for the more important aspects of their

work. The “tough-minded” school of workers is usually very contemptuous (蔑视的) of the idea

that good work can only be done naturally, under the influence of inspiration.

Those who believe that they need only work and study as the fit takes them have a mistaken belief

either in their own talent or in the value of “freedom.” Freedom from discipline leads to unhappiness

rather than “self-expression” or “personality development.” Our society insists on regular habits,

timekeeping and punctuality. Whether we like it or not, if we mean to make our way in society, we

have to meet its demands.

If you follow some of our suggestions below and have enough exercise, you can keep your heart

strong and healthy.

Eat Fruits & Vegetables

Not only are fruits and vegetables high in vitamins, minerals and fibre, they’re also very low in

calories and high in antioxidants (抗氧化物质), which can help prevent disease.

Pay Much Attention to Fibre

Fibre is found in fruits, vegetables and grains. It keeps the body’s digestive system running smoothly

and helps the body feel full. Most importantly, soluble (可溶性的) fibre can help lower cholesterol

(胆固醇).

Watch Your Sodium Intake

Sodium (钠) can raise blood pressure. Sodium in Americans’ diets mainly comes from foods with

added salt. By cooking fresh food at home, you can cut back on sodium by using herbs (香草) and

spice (植物香料) for flavour and cooking with half as much salt as in the past.

Go for Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Research has shown that omega-3 acids lower fat in the blood, help keep the “good” cholesterol,

and reduce sudden heart attacks, blood clots and stroke (血栓和中风).

Get Moving

Exercise is the key to keeping healthy. Try to aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day.

Not only will it help take waste out of your body, but it will also raise “good” cholesterol. 第3页
