When Christian Bucks was in the first grade, his dad was considering taking a

job in Germany. So the family wanted to find a school for Christian, they looked

through the 1 of German schools online. One of the schools they looked at showed

a “Buddy Bench”. It is a 2 bench(长凳) where students can sit when they would

like someone to talk to them or ask them to play.

Christian’s dad didn’t take the job in Germany, 3 Christian couldn’t stop

thinking about the Buddy Bench. At his own school, he had often seen children 4

alone at break time. He thought a Buddy Bench would make a great 5 to his school.

“I didn’t want any kids to be lonely,” he explained.

So Christian talked to the headmaster of the

school 6 getting a Buddy Bench

for the playground. The headmaster, Mr. Miller, thought it was a 7 suggestion

and agreed to buy the bench. So Christian went to 8 the style and color of the

bench at a store.

Then Christian made a video, in which he and some of his friends showed the other

kids how to 9 the Buddy Bench. “It’s for kids who are 10 at break time

and don’t have anything to do,” explained Christian. “They go to the Buddy Bench

and someone will ask 11 they want to play or talk.”

The kids at Christian’s school liked the idea and started using the bench 12

it was fixed. Some kids thanked Christian for bringing the idea to this school. What

has surprised Christian most is all

the 13 the Buddy Bench has received outside

of his school. Other schools all over the United States have 14 Christian’s

school for information about the Buddy Bench. “Mr. Miller has heard from 36 states!”

said Christian 15 .

And Christian has a message for other kids, “If you have a hope and a dream, 2 take action.”

Recently, Hannah Lucas and her brother Charlie sat at their kitchen table

describing the mo-ment the two of them put their heads together to create a special

app.

At the time, Hannah was suffering with an illness that caused her to pass out. 3 Unluckily, there was nobo-dy around.

Later she searched for an app that would allow her to press a button so a trusted

friend or family member would know immediately that she needed help. After realizing

there was no such thing, Hannah and her brother decided to do something about it.

After some research, Hannah made some early drawings of what the app might look like.

Then, after taking a programming class, Charlie began figuring out the best way

for the app to work. The pair wanted something that would send a text message to

up to five contacts that reads: “Hey, I’m not OK. Please call me, text me, or come

find me.”, along with a link to the user’s current GPS location. Together, they

started looking for someone to help them make the app. And when Hannah shared her

dream with instructors in a summer business class she attended, they got behind the

idea. “They were really excited about the app. They thought of a million different

mar-keting strategies,” Hannah said.

By mid-December, a working version of the app, named “notOK”, was finished

as a birthday present for Hannah. “It was exactly what we wanted,” Charlie said.

She was excited to know that her app would help many more people. “It’s like I

went through my dark times just so I could help people through theirs,” she said.
