My mom was never a fan of the traditional Christmas cookie. Instead of making cookies, mom made

cheese balls. This was an all-month affair, starting with three weeks of mom telling everyone she knew that

she was going to make cheese balls. She loved everything about them:the shopping, the creaming and the

folding. By the time she finished making a cheese ball, it was the size of a small plate. “Quick!”she’d shout.

That was the signal for one of us kids to rush over with the Christmas platter(大盘). She’d pick up the ball

with two hands and put it down with satisfaction. We’d gather round the table and stare at the warming ball.

Finally, mom would look at dad and say, “Well, who wants to go first? ”After I had children, I started my

own Christmas baking traditions. I am my mother’s daughter, so I, too, have some unused cookie cutters. I

do make chocolate chip cookies, but they’re free-form ones. Fortunately, my Christmas Day rum cake

saves the day. Technically, it’s not my rum cake.

The recipe came from a person who didn’t like me very much, which she mentioned in December.

One day she showed up with a rum cake. It was delicious. When I asked for the recipe(食谱), she agreed. I

get teary-eyed every time I make the rum cake. This may have something to do with my single-mother days.
