A large dinner party is being given in an up-country station by a colonial official and his wife. The guests are army and government officers and their wives, and an American naturalist. At one side of the long table, a spirited discussion springs up between a young girl and an army officer. The girl insists women have long outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era, and that they are not as anxious as their grandmothers were. The officer says they are, arguing women haven't the actual nerve control of men."A woman's reaction in any crisis," the officer says, "is to scream. And while a man may feel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has."The American scientist does not join in the argument but sits and watches the faces of the other guests. As he stares, he sees a slight, though strange look of anxiety come over the face of the hostess. With a small gesture she summons the servant standing behind her chair. She whispers to him. The servant's eyes widen. He turns quickly and leaves the room. No one else sees this, nor the servant when he puts a bowl of milk on the balcony outside the glass doors. The American understands. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing. It is bait for a snake. He realizes there is a cobra in the room. The American's eyes move across the room but he sees nothing. He realizes the snake can only be in one place—under the table. His first reaction is to jump back and warn the others. But he knows any sudden movement will frighten the cobra and it will strike. He speaks quickly, the quality of his voice so arresting that it quietens everyone. "I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred—that's five minutes —and not one of you is to move a single muscle. Now! Ready!"The 20 people sit like stone images while he counts. He is saying "…two hundred and eighty..." when, out of the corner of his eye, he sees the snake emerge and make for the bowl of milk. Four or five screams ring out as he jumps to slam shut the balcony doors."There is your proof!" the host says. "A man has just shown us real control.""Just a minute," the American says, turning to his hostess, "How did you know that cobra was in the room?"A faint smile comes across the woman's face as she replies. "Because it was lying across my foot."(1)What is the argument between the army officer and the young girl about?A.Whether women are afraid of mice.B.Whether men are calmer than women.C.Whether men are cleverer than women.D.Whether women would make suitable soldiers.(2)Why is the servant asked to put out some milk?A.To play a trick.B.To serve the guests.C.To attract the snake.D.To feed the hostess's pet.(3)Why does the scientist suggest the guests play a game?A.He doesn't want anyone to panic.B.He intends to test the officer's theory.C.He sees there was a snake in the room.D.He wants to entertain the other guests.(4)What does the author imply through the hostess's final statement?A.The army officer's opinion is wrong.B.The hostess understood the American's intention.C.The American was surprised by the snake's presence.D.The hostess has had previous experience dealing with snakes.6.Have you ever heard of a pawpaw(木瓜)? If not, do not feel bad. Most Americans do not know of the fruit, though it is native to the United States.Once, however, it was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happily, those who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods. A pawpaw is a tropical-like fruit that grows on trees found all over the eastern United States. It's also the largest fruit native to the US.It is similar to a typical mango in size. It has a dull green-colored skin, and a soft, almost-creamy orange inside. The pawpaw was not sold commercially in the past. The fruit requires a very special environment-low, wet areas that sometimes flood. It has a very short harvest season, from two to three weeks in September and October. In addition, the fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw tree it came from.Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers haveorganized "pawpaw festivals" to reintroduce people to the food. At such a festival in Maryland recently, farmers displayed different products made with pawpaws. There were pawpaw jams, pies, gelato(冰淇淋)and beer. Michael Judd helped organize the Maryland pawpaw festival.Farmers are trying to grow kinds of pawpaws that will be easier to ship and sell commercially. Donna and Jim Davis are pawpaw farmers in Westminster, Maryland. They said that they purchased their pawpaw trees in the 1990s and now sell the fruit at farmer's markets and online.(1)What can we know about the pawpaw according to the text?A.Its harvest season lasts long.B.It grows in Europe originally.C.It has already returned to its former position.D.It used to be well-received in North America.(2)What limited the pawpaw to being sold commercially in the past?A.It was unknown to the world.B.It's hard to grow, store and transport.C.It has similar taste with typical mangoes.D.The planters were unwilling to grow them for low profits.(3)Why do farmers hold "pawpaw festivals"?A.To show lots of delicious food to people.B.To make the pawpaw known to people again.C.To introduce people to a completely new fruit.D.To tell people the forgotten history about the fruit.(5)What is the best title for the text?A.The History of Pawpaws.B.How to Grow Pawpaws.C.The Comeback of Pawpaws.D.The Origin of Pawpaw Festival.四、七选五(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)7. They use the devices to stay in contact with family and friends while driving. The most common method of communication is by sending written text messages, a custom known as texting.A new study suggests that more than half of U. S. parents believe texting while driving a car or other vehicles is unsafe. Yet most of those questioned said they do it anyway. The finding was reported earlier this month in a scientific publication. Researchers questioned 435 parents from across the United States. Regan Bergmark, who led the survey, said that many people believe texting while driving is unsafe but have also likely done it. In fact, the survey found that 52 percent of millennial(千禧年的)parents said they thought it was "never" safe to text and drive. The same goes for 58 percent of older parents. But almost two-thirds of parents reported reading texts while driving, and more than half of them have also written texts. Millennial parents were more likely to use email while driving and drive faster than the speed limit."The problem with smartphones is that they have become an unavoidable part of daily life for most people," Regan said. "Many people are expected to be reachable by phone or email immediately, to be reachable for their children or work. Being a responsible adult therefore often means always being reachable —yet we also know that while driving, being reachable carries with it the risk of a crash."In general, it is never safe to use a smartphone while driving. There are a number of apps that can help to limit distracted driving by disabling cell phone features when the vehicle is in motion. The simplest thing to do is put the phone out of sight and out of reach to reduce the temptation to drive distracted.【长难句分析】"The problem with smartphones is that they have become an unavoidable part of daily life for most people," Regan said.翻译:“智能手机的问题在于,它们已经成为大多数人日常生活中不可避免的一部分,”里根说。

Hiking generally doesn't require any fancy equipment or special skills, just a piece of map and a thirst for adventure. This activity can be as relaxing as you make it.Backcountry CampingWhy limit yourself to just a day hike when you can have a full weekend(or longer)adventure? Backcountry camping involves packing your tent, sleeping gear, food, and water on your back to set up camp in a remote location. If you're an experienced hiker and camper, this is an excellent way to test your survival skills and explore the wilderness.Mountain and Rock climbingUnlike long hikes through the woods, biking allows you to cover more ground and travel farther in nature. Mountain biking typically involves riding up and down steep slopes, between trees, and over rocks. If this sounds too intense or your tires aren't suited for rugged terrain, consider taking a road bike on paved trails through forest preserves or along country roads.GardeningContrary to popular belief, you don't have to travel beyond your own backyard to experience the beauty of nature every day. If your personality is less adventurous or your mobility restricted, consider planting a garden to grow your own vegetables, fruits, herbs, or flowers. There's something truly satisfying about mixing up a salad with fresh ingredients you grew yourself. One of the best parts about spending time in nature is that it doesn't have to break your budget and anyone can do it.(1)What does hiking need for hikers?A.Practical skills.B.Necessary equipment.C.A world map.D.A strong desire.(2)Where will you go to show your survival potential in the wild?A.To a backyard.B.To a far-away place.C.To a mountain.D.To a forest.(3)Which of the following can take you to travel farthest?A.Hiking.B.Backcountry Camping.C.Mountain and Road Biking.D.Gardening.(4)What is the advantage of enjoying the nature beauty in your garden?A.It's adventurous.B.It saves money.C.It's popular.D.It requires carefulness.4.Daniel was born in New Orleans, LA., in 1962, slow to walk and talk, and short. He was the tiniest in his class, but he developed a warm, outgoing nature and was popular with his peers(同龄人). And he becameskillful at sports.Baseball gave him his earliest challenge. He was an excellent players in Little League. At graduation, the coach named Daniel the team's most valuable player. His finest hour, though, came at a school science meeting. He entered an exhibit explaining how the circulatory system works. It was traditional, especially compared to(与……相比)the modern, computerized, blinking-light models entered by other students. My wife, Sara, felt embarrassed for him.It turned out that the other kids had made their exhibits. As the judges went on their rounds, they found that these other kids couldn't answer their questions. Daniel answered every one. When the judges awarded the Albert Einstein Plague for the best exhibit, they gave it to him.By the time Daniel left for college he stood six feet tall and weighed 170 pounds. He was in superb condition, but he quit baseball for English literature. I was sorry that he would not develop his athletic talent, but proud that he had made such a satisfactory decision. One day I told Daniel that the great failing in my life had been that I didn't take a year or two off to travel when I finished college. This is the best way, to my way of thinking, to broaden oneself. Once I had married and begun working, I found that the dream of living in another culture had disappeared. Daniel thought about this. After graduation, he worked as a waiter at college, a bike messenger and a house painter. With the money he earned, he had enough to go to Paris. The night before he was to leave, I tossed in bed. I was trying to figure out something to say. Nothing came to mind. Maybe, I thought, it wasn't necessary to say anything.(1)How can we describe little Daniel?A.He was thin and tall.B.He was slow in his study.C.He was good at basketball.D.He got on well with his classmates.(2)Why was Daniel's mother upset about his exhibit?A.Because it was not to the taste of the judges.B.Because it was computerized.C.Because it was designed by his father.D.Because it was attractive.(3)What can we infer according to Paragraph 6?A.Daniel will study in Paris.B.Daniel dropped out of college.C.What the author said impressed Daniel greatly.D.Daniel worked hard to pay off the money he borrowed.5.A handful of old mobile phones lay in a grey bucket. These outdated devices, which are about to be chopped into thousands of pieces, will be given a second life as recycled e-waste. But many phones won't.According to the latest estimates, the world gets rid of approximately 50 million metric tonnes of e-waste annually. E-waste is full of dangerous materials that can cause damage to human health and the environment if not managed properly. But only 20 percent of global e-waste is recycled. The rest ends up in landfill, or burned— or is not recycled at all.And yet, Switzerland is a good example of how to deal with the growing environmental issue. The country collects and recycles roughly 75 percent of this discarded material. This is thanks to a strongvoluntary "take-back" system, where consumers can take e-waste to a recycling collection point or any electronic shop retailer. A recycling station can be found within at most 300 meters from any residential area. Everyone gets involved. Switzerland's e-waste system is unique and can't be easily copied—due to a strong recycling culture within the country. However, Switzerland faces the same global challenges as every nation. The built-in lithium ion batteries aren't easy to take out. The only way to remove these potentially dangerous components is with a bar and hammer. This poses a significant risk to those handling the goods. As such, producers need to be more transparent(信息透明的)and indicate better, where the harmful substances are, and how they can be removed.Once the battery is removed, e-waste is sorted into different component parts —metals, plastics and other materials. Roughly 70 percent of the device can be recycled. The material that cannot be recycled is used for other purposes like construction material or is burned to generate energy. Mobile phones—from a material perspective, from a value perspective, and also from an environmental impact perspective —are very important. For the past 15 years, Switzerland has been actively encouraging and supporting electrical waste disposal practices. They are happy to share their knowledge, experience, lessons learned, and they are happy if other people pick up on it.【长难句分析】1. As a child, Murray hated school because when she did go,she was teased as an oddball—after all, she had no one at home to make sure she showered or got up on time.Rather than submit to the sadness that had characterized her brief experience in foster care, Murray chose to care for herself. When Murray was 16, her parents both died from drugs. Murray felt that event as "a slap in the face" that caused her to question where her life was going. With an eighth-grade education, Murray decided that, as she said, "Life rewards action. I was going to go out there and... have action in my life every day instead of this stag-nant(停滞的)behavior that I had been staying in for so long."At an alternative high school, Murray took a double course load and completed high school in only two years. The school took its top 10 students, including Murray, on a trip to Boston, where the group walked through Harvard Yard."It's not as though I had some sort of insight at the moment... It was more that I got jealous of how these students had so much opportunity, and I felt that I had very little. And so then I thought, 'Well, what's the difference between me and anyone here?' And I filled in all the gaps." Her grades earned Murray a scholarship from the New York Times. She applied and was admitted to Harvard, and graduated in 2009.Along the way, Murray began to tell her story through writing and public speaking. Her tale was adapted by Lifetime Television in the 2013 film Homeless to Harvard: the Liz Murray Story. In all she does, Murray shows ambition—not only to achieve material goals and accomplishments, but more importantly, to go beyond circumstances and achieve the very best of which one is capable.(1)What was Murray's life like when she was a child?A.Happy but busy.B.Quiet and comfortable.C.Hard and lonely.D.Poor but satisfying.(2)When did Murray decide to change herself?A.In her childhood.B.After high school.C.During Studying in Harvard.D.After her parents' death.(3)How did Murray spend her time in the high school?A.She felt doubtful about herself and admired others.B.She turned sorrow into strength to work hard.C.She tried to enjoy life and got more opportunity.D.She took a double course load to become the best student.(4)What may be the best title for the text?A.An uneven life road of MurrayB.The way of Murray to become perfectC.Murray, the girl who never gave up goalsD.Murray, the girl who grew up in hardship4.Affordable housing in US cities just got a lot easier to find. That's because Repvblik, a Los Angeles, California-based company, is turning unused commercial space into homes for low-income people.Hotels across the US are closing, and the pandemic(疫情)didn't help, but some have been vacant for years. A former Days Inn in Branson Missouri is one such example. According to Fast Company, the hotel was unused for eight years. Now, it is being used for affordable housing.Repvblik changed this empty hotel into a housing project called Plato's Cove that features studio and one bedroom apartments for low-income people who could not afford standard rent prices. Rents start at $ 495 for an unfurnished studio that includes all utilities(公用设施),one large room, a kitchen and a full bath. The monthly income requirement is only 2.5 times the rent. Now, Branson, a city that depended heavily on tourism, has affordable housing for people who have low-income jobs or are out of work due to the economic downturn that occurred because of the coronavirus pandemic. But unlike most affordable housing projects, the company did not use federal funding. "We were told with this market that it couldn't be done," said Rubin. "Everyone said, 'You can't do it without low-income housing tax credits,' which is completely incorrect. You absolutely can."Rubin argues that many other large commercial spaces that are not being used can be turned into affordable housing and he has been doing it for years. First in his native South Africa, where he converted office buildings into housing in Johannesburg. He said that he struggled to find investors for Repvblik for a few years but that is changing.Rubin sees his model as something that can be used to create housing for the homeless. While cities have been cautious to consider doing this type of construction in the past, the pandemic has pushed them to consider new options to get people off the streets.(1)Why are low-income people easier to find housing now?A.More hotels available.B.Repvblik's contributions.C.Good commercial activities.D.Influences of the pandemic.(2)What does Branson mainly rely on?A.Traffic.B.Tourism.rge companies.D.Cultural industry.(3)How did Rubin react when others raised objections?A.He almost gave up.B.He hesitated a bit.C.He argued with them,D.He believed his decision.(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Rubin Has Unique SightB.Care More for the HomelessC.Repvblik Becomes Well-knownD.Change Unused Hotels into Homes5)especially on weekdays作状语。

The machine makes the clothes turn round quickly, heats them to remove the sweat, and then passes the steam through a kind of special material to make purified water.Since it was brought into use for the first time, its creators say more than 1,000 people have drunk others' "sweat" in Gothenburg. They add that the liquid is cleaner than local tap water. The machine was built for the United Nations' child-focused charity UNICEF to promote a campaign highlighting the fact that 780 million people in the world lack access to clean water. The machine was designed and built by engineer Andreas Hammar, known locally for his appearances on TV tech show Mekatronik. He said the key part of the sweat machine was anew water purification part developed by a company named HVR, which worked with Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology."It uses a technique called membrane distillation(膜蒸馏)," he told the BBC. "We use a special kind of material that only lets steam through but keeps bacteria, salts, clothing fibres and other things out. They have something similar on the International Space Station, but our machine was cheaper to build. However, one thing we are not satisfied with our machine is that the amount of water it produces depends on how sweaty the person is, but one person's T-shirt typically produces 10 ml, only about a mouthful."The machine has been put on show at the Gothia Cup—the world's largest international youth football tournament. Mattias Ronge, chief executive of Stockholm-based advertising agency Deportivo, said the machine had helped raise awareness for UNIEF, but in reality had its limitations."People haven't produced as much sweat as we hoped—right now the weather in Gothenburg is so bad," Mattias Ronge said. "So we've equipped the machine with exercise bikes and volunteers are cycling like crazy. Even so, the demand for sweat is much greater than the supply. And the machine will never be produced in large numbers, since there are better solutions out there such as water purifying pills."(1)What does the text manly tell us?A.A better solution to purifying dirty water.B.A machine which turns sweat into drinking water.C.The serious shortage of clean water the world is faced with.D.The advantages of a new invention over water purifying pills.(2)Why is UNICEF mentioned in the text?A.To show how the machine works.B.To tell us who invented the machine.C.To show the importance of the United Nations.D.To explain why the machine was invented.(3)What is the machine's disadvantage according to its inventor?A.It costs a large amount of money to build.B.The water produced by it isn't clean enough.C.The amount of water it produces is rather small.D.It needs too much time to turn sweat into drinking water.(4)What does Mattias Ronge think of the machine?A.It does not work at all.B.It is not worth popularizing.C.It can only be used in summer.D.The water it produces tastes sweet.(1)What is the underlined phrase "a one-size-fits-all way" in Paragraph 1 refer to?A.An alternative way.B.A temporary way.C.A unique solution.D.A perfect solution.(2)What can be learned from Paragraph 2?A.Each heavy individual is at higher risk for diseases.B.Fat people are considered to be metabolically healthy.C.Not all fat people suffer high blood pressure or diabetes.D.Thin people were twice as likely to get diabetes as fat ones.(3)How does the author convince us of the effects of weight-central health care?A.By listing figures.B.By quoting opinions.C.By giving examples.D.By making comparisons.(4)Which can be the best title of this passage?A.Weight ShameB.Weight Loss, Health GainsC.Weight EffectsD.Only Weight Is Not Enough四、书面表达(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)7. And the machine will never be produced in large numbers, since there are better solutions out there such as water purifying pills."(1)What does the text manly tell us?A.A better solution to purifying dirty water.B.A machine which turns sweat into drinking water.C.The serious shortage of clean water the world is faced with.D.The advantages of a new invention over water purifying pills.(2)Why is UNICEF mentioned in the text?A.To show how the machine works.B.To tell us who invented the machine.C.To show the importance of the United Nations.D.To explain why the machine was invented.(3)What is the machine's disadvantage according to its inventor?A.It costs a large amount of money to build.B.The water produced by it isn't clean enough.C.The amount of water it produces is rather small.D.It needs too much time to turn sweat into drinking water.(4)What does Mattias Ronge think of the machine?A.It does not work at all.B.It is not worth popularizing.C.It can only be used in summer.D.The water it produces tastes sweet.6.Of all the animals on Earth, none are so driven to explore as humans. Other animals will go in search of food or water. But humans can be encouraged by the possibility of discovery. So what is it that caused us to spread out across the world 60,000 years ago, instead of just staying in Africa?Perhaps it's in our DNA. In 1999, Dr. Chuansheng Chen led a team of scientists who were studying a gene(基因)known as DRD4-TR. This gene is found in about 20% of all humans. It's been connected with higher rates(比例)of risk-taking, exploration, and interest in new ideas. Dr. Chen found that DRD4-TR is more common in societies that move around a lot than those who don't. For example, studies in Africa show that the gene is much more common in nomadic tribes(游牧的部落)than in tribes that prefer to stay in one place. Several other researchers have studied this topic and found additional evidence to support Dr. Chen's research. But can a single gene be a drive for something as complex as the need to explore? Dr. Kenneth Kidd doesn't think so. He thinks DRD4-TR might increase curiosity(好奇心), but other important sets of genes also give us great minds and skilled hands. He believes that not just one gene, but groups of genes work together to create complex behaviors like exploration. The context(环境)we live in also plays a role in our need to explore. For example, during the European Age of Exploration, explorers became rich and famous for their discoveries. This drove others to try to increase their wealth through exploration. In this case, their exploration was more likely driven by money than by genes.Maybe the need to explore comes from something inside us, such as the DRD4-TR gene. Or maybe it has more to do with what's happening in the world around us. Maybe it's both. Whatever the reason, it seems we(or at least some of us)will keep exploring the mountains, the sea, the stars, and beyond, because that's just what humans do.【长难句分析】1. In an experiment, they found fish returned after hearing recordings of the sounds of a healthy ocean reef. The scientists placed underwater speakers in areas where coral had been dying in Australia's northern Great Barrier Reef. They played the sounds over a period of about six weeks in 2017 and studied the results. The team reported that twice as many fish arrived in areas where the sounds of healthy coral were played. The sounds also led to a 50 percent increase in the number of species present in the area, the researchers found. Among the arriving fish were species that feed on all major food sources.Different species of fish perform many activities that support the ocean environment and sea life. "Damaged reefs have a higher chance of recovery if they have healthy fish populations," the scientists wrote in the report. Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places. They contain the sounds of many kinds of shrimp, fish and other sea creatures. Young fish listen for these sounds when they are looking for a place to settle.Reefs "become ghostly quiet" when they suffer destruction that is usually related to human-caused pollution. Coral damage can cause unappealing smells and sounds that drive shrimp and fish away. But the experiment suggested that the use of underwater loudspeakers was an effective way to get young fish to come back. The return of these fish is the first step to seeing major improvements in reef health. Recovery is supported by fish that clean the reef and create space for corals to regrow. The underwater sounds are a promising way to fight coral reef damage at the local community level. But other threats need to be reduced as well. These include climate change, pollution and overfishing.(1)The final purpose of putting sounds speaker systems underwater is to ________.A.catch more fishB.attract more speciesC.help damaged coralD.cause more fish to return(2)What can we learn from the text?A.Healthy sea life contributes to the ocean environment.B.Healthy corals depend on a variety of sea species.C.Coral reefs become noisy when they suffer pollution.D.Coral damage is caused by unappealing smells and sounds.(3)What's the best title of this passage?e Sounds to Call Fish Back to CoralB.Find Ways to Recover Sea Ecological BalanceC.Coral Reef Damage, Human's ErrorD.Coral Reef Needs Peaceful Environment(4)Where is the passage most likely from?A.A researcher's diary.B.A geographic guidebook.C.An academic report.D.A technological magazine.D.The time management.(2)What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A.Ways to find the precise entry angle.B.Consequences of wrong entry degree.C.Factors to survive "the seven minutes".D.Reasons for the necessity of speed reducing.(3)What does "it" refer to in paragraph 4?A.The spot.B.The area.C.The system.D.The surface.(4)What can be inferred from Lori Glaze's words?A.Instruments aboard the rover are not quite reliable.B.Perseverance is able to collect enough evidence needed.C.Man still has a long way to go to prove life was on Mars.D.Samples of Mars will be returned soon to our labs on the earth.三、书面表达(本题共计 2 小题,每题 5 分,共计10分)6. 假设你是红星中学高三(1)班的学生李华,你校正在招募志愿者,为春节期间中外学生交流活动做准备。
