Abstract.ApartisanreviewofsomeofthemostimportantγγchannelsaccessibleatLEP2,withspecialstressonthemeasurementofthephotonstructurefunctionFγ2andonassociatedproblemswithMonteCarlomodelling.

2.ExtractingFγ2(x,Q2)Figure1showstheFeynmangraphfromwhichtheinterestingvariablesaredefined.Thetaggedleptoniseitheranelectronorapositron,detectedintheforwardorendcapdetectorswithascatteringangleθtandenergyEt.

•ItisverydifficulttomeasureFLbecausetherateislowerathighywherethistermismostsignificant,andthereareseriousbackgroundsgeneratedbybeam-associatedlowenergyelectrons–atleastinOPALandDELPHI.(Fory>>0.5,Et<<0.5,yetmosttaggedstudiesrequireEt>0.7Eb.)ThereisasuggestionthatALEPHmaybeabletodoit[1]butitishardtobehopeful.Nothinghaschangedsincethe1986Aachengreenbook[2].

•Thedoubletaggedrateislowwithexistingluminometers,butalloftheexperimentsarenowtakingtheirverysmallangletaggersmoreseriouslysoweshouldsoonseemeasurementsofP2dependencefrom0to≃0.5GeV2.•InsinglytaggedstudiesforFγ2realprogresshasbeenmade,buttherearepracticalproblems,mainlybecausethemassWoftheγγsystemishardtomeasure(acompletelyadifferentsituationfromHERAwherethetargetprotonhasaknownmomentum).Theseproblemswillbethemainfocusofmytalk.

Ourphotonscomefromaverysoft,spread-outspectrum.WeareforcedtomeasurethevisiblemassWvisofthehadronictracksandclusters.Thisisanefficientmeasurementinthebarrelregion(θ>300mrad)buttheefficiencyandaccuracybothfalloffintheendcapsandluminometers.ThetwostandardQCDMonteCarlos,HERWIG[5]andPYTHIA[6],bothshowaseriouslossofcorrelation[7]betweenthegeneratedandthevisiblevaluesatlargeW(e.g.section(a)offigure2,wheretheopencirclesrepresentameasurementusingonlythebarreldetectors).ThislackofcorrelationatlargeWcorrespondstoverypoorreconstructionofxintheinterestingregionwhereHERAseesrisingvaluesoftheprotonstructurefunctionasxdecreases[8,9].Thereisgreattheoreticalinterestinknowingifthephotonhasasimilarbehaviourtotheprotonatlowxbecauseofitshadron-likecharacter,orwhetherthephoton’sdirectcouplingtoquarkpairsmakesavisibledifference.AtfirstsighttheHERWIGandPYTHIApredictionssuggestthatthesemeasurementsmightbeimpossibleatLEP.Butthereishope.Makinguseofthesampledhadronicenergyintheendcapsandluminometers,theobservedenergyflowsseeninfigure3arebynomeansasstrongly
