Reading report—Wuthering Heights
The author of Wuthering Heights is Emily Bronte and this is the only novel of her. Emily Bronte was an English novelist and poet, best remembered for her solitary novel, now considered a classic of English literature. Her two sisters, Charlotte and Anne were also the famous authors, so they were commonly called “the three sisters of Bronte” on literature history in England.
Wuthering Heights was not well received by the reading public. Many readers thought it was sordid and unnatural at first. It was until 1850, when Wuthering Heights received a second printing by the introduction of Charlotte, that it attracted many readers.
I will give a brief introduction of the novel. It is
a story about love and revenge. The story is narrated by Lockwood, a gentleman visiting Thrushcross Grange. Heathcilff was adopted by Mr. Earnshaw on the Livepool Street. He lived with Mr. Earnshaw’s son Hindley and his daughter Catherine. Hindley hated Heathcliff but his sister like him after their father died. Hindley became the host of the family. He treated Heathcliff
as a farmer and insult him. At the same time, Cathy and Heathcliff loved deeply each other. Meanwhile, Linton, the son of Thrushcross Grange paid court to Cathy and visit her very often. Cathy made up her mind to get married with him. Heathcliff was very angry and went out. Heathcliff came back with a lot of money after three years. He cheated Hindley' belongings by gambling. He raised up Hensley’s son, Hareton Earnshaw He did the things all for revenge. He married Linton’s sister Isabella. Cathy died after she gave birth to little Catherine. Isabella discerned Heathcliff and left him. She procreated little Linton and died. Heathcliff rose up little Linton, but giving him little love. He let little Linton love little Catherine. Heathcliff kidnapped little Catherine and forced her to marry his son. Just on their wedding day, Linton died and Heathcliff got all Linton’s belongings. He finished his revenge. Little Linton also died after they married. As the time goes on, little Catherine and Hareton loved each other. But Heathcliff didn’t stop them because he was importuned by Cathy. He stayed at his own room all day and didn’t have meals or sleep.
At last he died.
From this novel, we can see that Heathcliff did everything just for revenge. Including he ruined Hindley by gambling and enticed Isabella to marry him, but abusing her after they married and so on. Heathcliff committed suicide at last. His death was a die for their love, and expressed his undying love for Catherine. Before he died, he gave up his revenge for the next generation. This reflected that he actually had a good nature, but the cruel reality made him lose the nature. Although Catherine loved Heathcliff deeply, but she decided to marry Linton finally. She cheated her own feelings and paid a painful price for her behavior. Fortunately, little Catherine and Hareton can live together finally.。
