1. WRITING TASK 1 2. WRITING TASK 2WRITING TASK 1You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.1.The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010. The two pie charts provide information on the percentage of British students in a particular English University who could speak various languages other than English in the years 2000 and 2010.It can be seen that the highest percentage of students in both years was comprised of those whose only other language was Spanish. It is also apparent that the proportion of students without the ability to speak a foreign language had fallen dramatically by the decade.Spanish speaking British students made up 30% of the total number of British students at the university in 2000, and by 2010, this figure had risen slightly to 35%. Similarly, those who had learnt another language other than English or the ones listed, had grown noticeably from 15% to 20%, as likewise had those who spoke two foreign languages (10% to 15%). The percentage of the British students able to speak German remained constant at 10%.Meanwhile, for those who spoke no foreign language, the figure had dropped sharply from a fifth in 2000 to a tenth in 2010. Following a similar, albeit less dramatic, falling trend were those whose only other language than English was French —from 15% to 10%.
举例:样题第一套(此处省略原文)Q8:The writer is considering deleting the underlined sentence. Should the sentence be kept or deleted?A. Kept, because it provides supporting evidence about the benefits of walking.B. Kept, because it provides an additional example of a community stakeholderwith whom transportation planners work.C. Deleted, because it blurs the paragraph’s focus on the community stakeholderswith whom transportation planners work.D. Deleted, because it doesn’t provide specific examples of what the numerousbenefits of walking are.
This passage is adapted from Jane Austen, Emma, originally published in 1815. Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.这一段描述了小说主角的性格特点“She was the youngest of the two daughters of a most affectionate, indulgent father, and had, in consequence of her sister’s marriage, been mistress of his house from a very early period. Her mother had died too long ago for her to have more than an indistinct remembrance of her caresses, and her place had been supplied by an excellent woman as governess, who had fallen little short of a mother in affection.这一段结尾引出了另外一个人物“Sixteen years had Miss Taylor been in Mr. Woodhouse’s family, less as a governess than a friend, very fond of both daughters, but particularly of Emma. Between them it was more the intimacy of sisters. Even before Miss Taylor had ceased to hold the nominal office of governess, the mildness of her temper had hardly allowed her to impose any restraint; and the shadow of authority being now long passed away, they had been living together as friend and friend very mutually attached, and Emma doing just what she liked; highly esteeming Miss Taylor’s judgment, but directed chiefly by her own.这一段描述了两人的关系“The real evils indeed of Emma’s situation were the power of having rather too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself; these were the disadvantages which threatened alloy to her many enjoyments. The danger, however, was at present so unperceived, that they did not by any means rank as misfortunes with her.埋下伏笔,暗示未来有变化“Sorrow came—a gentle sorrow—but not at all in the shape of any disagreeable consciousness. —Miss Taylor married. It was Miss Taylor’s loss, which first brought grief. It was on the wedding day of this beloved friend that Emma first sat in mournful thought of any continuance. The wedding over and the bride people gone, her father and herself were left to dine together, with no prospect of a third to cheer a long evening. Her father composed himself to sleep after dinner, as usual, and she had then only to sit and think of what she had lost.变化终于发生了,主角意识到自己失去了什么“The event had every promise of happiness for her friend. Mr. Weston was a man of unexceptionable character, easy fortune, suitable age and pleasant manners; and there was some satisfaction in considering with what self-denying, generous friendship she had always wished and promoted the match; but it was a black morning’s work for her. The want of Miss Taylor would be felt every hour of every day. She recalled her past kindness—the kindness, the affection of sixteen years—how she had taught and how she had played with her from five years old—how she had devoted all her powers to attach and amuse her in health—and how nursed her through the various illnesses of childhood. A large debt of gratitude was owing here;“but the intercourse of the last seven years, the equal footing and perfect unreserve which had soon followed Isabella’s marriage on their being left to each other, was yet a dearer, tenderer recollection. It had been a friend and companion such as few possessed, intelligent, well informed, useful, gentle, knowing all the ways of the family, interested in all its concerns, and peculiarly interested in herself, in every pleasure, every scheme of her’s;—one to whom she could speak every thought as it arose, and who had such an affection for her as could never find fault.变化给主角带来的痛苦“How was she to bear the change? —It was true that her friend was going only half a mile from them; but Emma was aware that great must be the difference between a Mrs. Weston only half a mile from them, and a Miss Taylor in the house; and with all her advantages, natural and domestic, she was now in great danger of suffering from intellectual solitude. She dearly loved her father, but he was no companion for her. He could not meet her in conversation, rational or playful.痛苦没有解决“The evil of the actual disparity in their ages (and Mr. Woodhouse had not married early) was much increased by his constitution and habits; for having been a valetudinarian* (follow link to endnote) all his life, without activity of mind or body, he was a much older man in ways than in years; and though everywhere beloved for the friendliness of his heart and his amiable temper, his talents could not have recommended him at any time.她和父亲的关系这是一篇历史类的小说This passage is from Andrew Carnegie, "Wealth," originally published in 1889. Arriving penniless in Pennsylvania from Scotland in 1848, Carnegie became one of the richest people in the UnitedStates through the manufacture of steel.“The problem of our age is the proper administration of wealth, that the ties of brotherhood may still bind together the rich and poor in harmonious relationship. The conditions of human life have not only been changed, but revolutionized, within the past few hundred years. In former days there was little difference between the dwelling, dress, food, and environment of the chief and those of his retainers. . . . The contrast between the palace of the millionaire and the cottage of the laborer with us today measures the change which has come with civilization.作者指出了时代问题,同时描述了社会背景“This change, however, is not to be deplored, but welcomed as highly beneficial. It is well, nay, essential, for the progress of the race that the houses of some should be homes for all that is highest and best in literature and the arts, and for all the refinements of civilization, rather than that none should be so. Much better this great irregularity than universal squalor. Without wealth there can be no Maecenas.* (Follow link to endnote.) The “good old times” were not good old times. Neither master nor servant was as well situated then as to day. A relapse to old conditions would be disastrous to both—not the least so to him who serves—and would sweep away civilization with it. But whether the change be for good or ill, it is upon us, beyond our power to alter, and, therefore, to be accepted and made the best of. It is a waste of time to criticize the inevitable.作者发表观点,认为改变没有不好,人们应该接受必然的到来“It is easy to see how the change has come. One illustration will serve for almost every phase of the cause. In the manufacture of products we have the whole story. It applies to all combinations of human industry, as stimulated and enlarged by the inventions of this scientific age. Formerly, articles were manufactured at the domestic hearth, or in small shops, which formed part of the household. The master and his apprentices worked side by side, the latter living with the master, and therefore subject to the same conditions. When these apprentices rose to be masters, there was little or no change in their mode of life, and they, in turn, educated succeeding apprentices in the same routine. There was, substantially, social equality, and even political equality, for those engaged in industrial pursuits had then little or no voice in the State.作者详细描述过去的制造业,用以解释变化如何到来“The inevitable result of such a mode of manufacture was crude articles at high prices. Today the world obtains commodities of excellent quality at prices, which even the preceding generation would have deemed incredible. In the commercial world similar causes have produced similar results, and the race is benefited thereby. The poor enjoy what the rich could not before afford. What were the luxuries have become the necessaries of life. The laborer has now more comforts than the farmer had a few generations ago. The farmer has more luxuries than the landlord had, and is more richly clad and better housed. The landlord has books and pictures rarer and appointments more artistic than the king could then obtain.作者指出制造业的改变带来的前后对比“The price we pay for this salutary change is, no doubt, great. We assemble thousands of operatives in the factory, and in the mine, of whom the employer can know little or nothing, and to whom he is little better than a myth. All intercourse between them is at an end. Rigid castes are formed, and, as usual, mutual ignorance breeds mutual distrust. Each caste is without sympathy for the other, and ready to credit anything disparaging in regard to it. Under the law of competition, the employer of thousands is forced into the strictest economies, among which the rates paid to labor figure prominently, and often there is friction between the employer and the employed, between capital and labor, between rich and poor. Human society loses homogeneity.作者指出了这种变化的代价:劳资冲突“The price which society pays for the law of competition, like the price it pays for cheap comforts and luxuries, is also great; but the advantages of this law are also greater still than its cost—for it is to this law that we owe our wonderful material development, which brings improved conditions in its train.作者指出了这种变化是利大于弊的*Endnote.Gaius Maecenas (70 to 8 B.C.E.) was a great patron of the arts.。

The chart below shows the average time 16-22-year olds spent on playing video games in four different countries between 1992 and 2022.Summarize the details. Select and report the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
让我们先来看一下3w(when, where, what)。
The bar chart compares the amount of time spent on video games on average by youngsters aged between 16-22 years old from four countriesin two years 1992 and 2022.
It is evident that in 1992, the largest amount of time (85 hours) allocated to video games was from young people in country B. This was narrowly followed by country C and country A where respectively 78 hours and 76 hours were spent while it took the minimal hours for thisage group to play video games in country D, standing at merely 50.

The Impact of Social Media on SocietySocial media has become an integral part of our daily lives. It has revolutionized the way we communicate, share information, and connectwith others. However, its impact on society is a topic of ongoing debate. One major concern is the effect of social media on mental health. Studies have found a correlation between excessive social media use and increased feelings of anxiety and depression. Constant exposure to carefully curated and idealized versions of other people's lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Additionally, cyberbullying and online harassment have become prevalent issues, causing further harm to individuals' mental well-being.Another area of concern is the rise of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms. With the ease of sharing information, false stories and misleading content can quickly spread to a large audience, undermining the credibility of traditional news sources. This poses a significant challenge for society, as it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources of information.Furthermore, social media has had a profound impact on privacy and personal data protection. Users often unknowingly share personal information with third-party companies, which can lead to privacy breaches and security risks. The Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018 revealed how user data was harvested and used for targeted political ads, raising serious ethical questions about the role of social media in manipulating public opinion.Despite these concerns, social media also offers opportunities for positive change. It has provided a platform for marginalized voices to be heard and has facilitated social movements and activism. It allows for the dissemination of information and ideas on a global scale, promoting cultural exchange and understanding. In conclusion, the impact of social media on society is complex and multifaceted. While it has undoubtedly brought about significant changes in how we communicate and access information, it also raises important concerns regarding mental health, misinformation, and privacy. As users of social media, it is crucial that we are aware of these issues and actively work towards creating a safer and more responsible online environment.【问题一】What is one major concern about the impact of social media on society?【解析】One major concern about the impact of social media on society is its effect on mental health. 1、When we were cleaning the garage, my sister and I found the old soccer ball in a dark corner we used to play with when we were young.(A) the old soccer ball in a dark corner we used to play with when were young.(B) in a dark corner from when we were young the old soccer ball we played with(C) in a dark corner the old soccer ball we used to play with when we were young(D) the old soccer ball in a dark corner, we used to play with it when we were young(E) the old soccer ball, having played with it when we were young,in a dark corner句子的原意不难理解,应为,当我们清理车库的时候,我的姐姐和我在角落里发现了我们儿时玩的足球。
1. WRITING TASK 1 2. WRITING TASK 2WRITING TASK 1You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.1.You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The charts below show household spending patterns in two countries between 1995 and 2015.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Write at least 150 words. The pie charts compare five categories of household expenditure in the UK and New Zealand in the years 1995 and 2015.It is noticeable that the proportion of spending on food and drink fell in both countries over the 20-year period, while spending on utility bills rose.In 1995, 29% of an average New Zealand household budget went on food and drink, while the equivalent figure for a UK home was 23%. By 2015, expenditure on food and drink had fallen by 4% in New Zealand, and by a full 10% in the UK. By contrast, both countries saw an increase in expenditure on utility bills for the average home, from 27% to 31% in New Zealand and from 26% to 28% in the UK.Leisure activities accounted for the highest proportion of UK household spending in both years, but only the third highest proportion in New Zealand. In fact, in 2015, New Zealanders spent only half as much in relative terms on recreation (17%) as UK residents (34%). In both countries, transport costs and other costs took roughly 15% and 11% of household budgets respectively.
1.1.The chart below shows the shaping and growth of the forests in Yellowstone National Park after a fire disaster. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. The diagram illustrates in four stages the recovery of the forests in Yellowstone National Park after a fire disaster. According to the diagram, in the first picture, while the old forests still exist, they drop bad wood to the soil under them, which makes the soil more fertile, then lightning and fire strike, destroying the forests completely. And the growth of new forests starts right at this point. The second picture demonstrates that in the first 50 years after the devastating fire, saplings emerge where the old forests used to stand. The second five decades see the saplings grow in build while descend in overall number. In the next two centuries, the young trees continue to thrive in Yellowstone, because of the fertile soil and the ample sunlight. Then, three hundred years after the fire, the number of trees decline to roughly the same as the old forests. These five pictures show us that it takes as long as three centuries for a destroyed forest to be fully recovered.2.The diagrams below show the development of the village of Kelsbey in 1780, 1860 and 2000. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. The three diagrams illustrate what the village of Kelsbey looked like in 1780, 1860 and 2000. In 1780, Kelsbey had only 100 homes in the northeast, but there were a lot of woods in the east of the village and four farms in the middle. In the western part of the village, there was a river running from north to south. The year 1860 saw a doubling in the number of homes. However, the number of farms and woods decreased dramatically. At that time, a bridge could be seen over the river and a road was constructed, linking the river to the homes. 140 years later, the number of homes increased drastically to 500, but the farms and woods completely disappeared. Some schools and sports fields were established in the southeast of the village. A new southbound road was built, which connected the residential areas with the schools and sports facilities. Some shops opened along the eastern part of the river and to the south of the river, a wetland for birds came into being.。

The following sample Essay prompt is followed by an annotated version of the source text that suggests some of the ways that students might analyze the text in response to the prompt. The annotations are only examples of elements of the passage students may choose to write about. As you read the passage below, consider how Paul Bogard uses Evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims.Reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence.Stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choice or appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed.Adapted from Paul Bogard, “Let There be Dark.”2012 by the Los Angeles Times. Originally published December 21, 2012.At my family’s cabin on a Minnesota lake, I knew woods so dark that my hands disappeared before my eyes. I knew night skies in which meteors left smoky trails across sugary spreads of stars. But now, when 8 of 10 children born in the United States will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way, I worry we are rapidly losing night’s natural darkness beforerealizing its worth. This winter solstice, as we cheer the days’ gradual movement back toward light, let us also remember the irreplaceable value of darkness. All life evolved to the steady rhythm of bright days and dark nights. Today, though, when we feel the closeness of nightfall, we reach quickly for a light switch. And too little darkness, meaning too much artificial light at night, spells trouble for all.Already the World Health Organization classifies working the night shift as a probable human carcinogen, and the American Medical Association has voiced its unanimous support for “light pollution reduction efforts and glare reduction efforts at both the national and state levels.” Our bodies need darkness to produce the hormone melatonin, which keeps certain cancers from developing, and our bodies need darkness for sleep.Sleep disorders have been linked to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and depression, and recent research suggests one main cause of “short sleep”is “long light.”Whether we work at night or simply take our tablets, notebooks and smart phones to bed, there isn’t a place for this much artificial light in our lives. The rest of the world depends on darkness as well, including nocturnal and crepuscular species of birds, insects, mammals, fish and reptiles. Some examples are well known —the400 species of birds that migrate at night? in North America, the sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs—and some are not, such as the bats that save American farmers billions in pest control and the moths that pollinate 80% of the world’s flora. Ecological light pollution is like the bulldozer of the night, wrecking habitat and disrupting ecosystems several billion years in the making. Simply put, without darkness, Earth’s ecology would collapse . . .In today’s crowded, louder, more fast-paced world, night’s darkness can provide solitude, quiet and stillness, qualities increasingly in short supply. Every religious tradition has considered darkness invaluable for a soulful life, and the chance to witness the universe has inspired artists, philosophers and everyday stargazers since time began. In a world awash with electric light. . . how would Van Gogh have given the world his “Starry Night”? Who knows what this vision of the night sky might inspire in each of us, in our children or grandchildren?Yet all over the world, our nights are growing brighter. In the United States and Western Europe, the amount of light in the sky increases an average of about 6% every year. Computer images of the United States at night, based on NASA photographs, show that what was a very dark country as recently as the 1950s is now nearly covered with a blanket of light. Much of this light is wasted energy, which means wasted dollars. Those of us over 35 are perhaps among the last generation to have known truly dark nights. Even the northern lake where I was lucky to spend my summers has seen its darkness diminish. It doesn’t have to be this way. Light pollution is readily within our ability to solve, using new lighting technologies and shielding existing lights. Already, many cities and towns across North America and Europe are changing to LED streetlights, which offer dramatic possibilities for controlling wasted light. Other communities are finding success with simplyturning off portions of their public lighting after midnight. Even Paris, the famed “city of light,” which already turns of fits monument lighting after 1 a.m., will this summer start to require its shops, offices and public buildings to turn off lights after 2 a.m. Though primarily designed to save energy, such reductions in light will also go far in addressing light pollution. But we will never truly address the problem of light pollution until we become aware of the irreplaceable value and beauty of the darkness we are losing.Assignment: Write an essay in which you explain how Paul Bogard builds an argument to persuade his audience that natural darkness should be preserved. In your essay, analyze how Bogard uses one or more of the features listed in the box above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage.Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Bogard’s claims, but rather explain how Bogard builds an argument to persuade his audience. 用词:a) The descriptive words used in this sentence add visual intensity, evoking the wonder of the night sky.
