When it comes to Oracle backup and recovery, VERITAS® has one goal in mind – simplify the complexity of database backup and recovery while increasing availability. NetBackup™ for Oracle does this by interfacing to both Oracle7’s Enterprise Backup Utility (EBU) and Oracle8’s Recovery Manager (RMAN). Both EBU and RMAN provide a methodology for ensuring business-critical Oracle applications are safely backed up and can be recovered quickly. Additionally, NetBackup has demonstrated its performance leadership by being the first Oracle backup solution to break the 1 terabyte per hour barrier. VERITAS NetBackup provides complete data protection for Oracle running in Windows NT and UNIX environments. Organizations can centrally manage all aspects of backup and recovery for database and non-database files from intuitive, graphical user interfaces, thus allowing consistent backup policies to be set across the enterprise. NetBackup’s “data center” strength media management provides organizations with the ability to perform all aspects of media management, including library sharing. In addition, NetBackup’s Java interface provides complete real-time and historical analysis of all backup and recovery operations. In fact, NetBackup is used by Oracle internally.

System Requirements
Implementation Flexibility Administrators can define backup schedules with the graphical scheduling interface. The scheduler within NetBackup can execute backups on a daily/weekly/monthly basis – or even by the hour. A backup window can be defined to ensure that backups are not run outside of a predefined window. Lastly, administrators can give backup classes descriptive, multi-word names for tracking and reporting. Breakthrough Technology A breakthrough concept available to Oracle users is File System Level Block-level Incremental Backup (BLIB). This new concept in backup is currently available to Oracle users allocating their databases on VERITAS File System™ on Solaris and HP-UX platforms. It negates the need to scan the entire database in order to perform incremental backups, greatly reducing elapsed time and resource consumption. Support for additional operating systems is in development. The Complete UNIX and Windows NT Solution NetBackup 3.2 is the only solution that provides equal functionality and performance combined with intuitive graphical user interfaces for Oracle in both UNIX and Windows NT environments. Customers can choose UNIX servers, Windows NT servers or a combination as their backup server platform without sacrificing scalability or ease-of-use.
