The year was 1932. Amelia Earhart was flying alone from North America to England in a small single-engined aero plane. At midnight, several hours after she had left Newfoundland, she ran into bad weather. To make things worse, her altimeter (高度表) failed and she didn’t know how high she was flying. At night, and in a storm, a pilot is in great difficulty without an altimeter. At times, her plane nearly plunged (冲) into the sea.

Just before dawn, there was further trouble. Amelia noticed fire coming from the engine. Would she be able to reach land? There was nothing to do except to keep going and to hope.

In the end, Amelia Earhart did reach Ireland, and for the courage she had shown, she was warmly welcomed in England and Europe. When she returned to the United States, she was honored by President Hoover at a special dinner in the White House. From that time on, Amelia Earhart was famous. ks5u

What was so important about her flight? Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean alone, and she had set a record of fourteen hours and fifty-six minutes.

In the years that followed, Amelia Earhart made several flights across the United States, and on each occasion she set a new record for flying time. Amelia Earhart made these flights to show that women had a place in aviation (航空) and that air travel was useful.

9. Which of the following statements is NOT the difficulty which Amelia Earhart met in her flight from North America to England?

A. She was caught in a storm.

B. The altimeter went out of order.

C. Her engine went wrong.

D. She lost her direction.

10. When Amelia Earhart saw fire coming from the engine, what did she do?

A. She did nothing but pray for herself.

B. She changed her direction and landed in Ireland.

C. She continued flying.

D. She lost hope of reaching land.

11. According to the passage, what was Amelia Earhart’s reason for making her flights?

A. To set a new record for flying time.

B. To be the first woman to fly around the world.

C. To show that aviation was not just for men.

D. To become famous in the world.

12. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Amelia Earhart—First Across the Atlantic

B. Amelia Earhart—Pioneer in Women’s Aviation

C. A New Record for Flying Time

D. A Dangerous Flight from North America to England

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes(撞击) through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead! ks5u

Of course he isn't really dead. With any luck he isn't even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast-moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks.

There are two sides of their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress(床垫). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although their work depends on tricks of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman's success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the

way of the explosion just at the right moment.

Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff(悬崖) a thousand feet high. His parachute(降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed.

In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stuntgirls too!

13. Please define(给…下定义) “stuntman”. ks5u

14. What do you think is the most important factor of a successful performance for stuntmen?

15. What can be inferred (推断出) from the author's example of the Norwegian stuntman?

___________________________________________________________________________

16. Please decide if these statements are True (T) or False (F).

1)Most of those stunt actors do their jobs for a living. ____

2)The windows those stuntmen crash through are made of plastic. ____

However, they can also cause problems and unhealthy addictions. This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. This country has the world’s highest percentag e of high – speed Internet services. It has also a high number of game players who are addicted to online games. In 2004, a young man died after playing online games almost nonstop for 86 hours. A 12 – year – old boy stole $ 16,000 from his father to continue online games which he could not get away from. Such problems are spreading to other parts of Asia as well. In 2005, it was reported that about 80 percent of China’s 13.8 million online game players were under 25. And many of these were said to be addicted. Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth. Dr. Sue – Huei Chen, a psychologist (心理学家), discovered some signs of at – risk people. Such people often go online to escape from their problems. And they usually have no friendship or good social skills. They feel the need to spend more and more time online, so they may be absent from school or family. And they become upset if anyone tries to limit their online game playing. 56.The passage is mainly about .

V. Reading Comprehension (15%) A It was 3.21 a. m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the crackling (爆裂声)of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin, Long Island. With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each on through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, collapsed on the lawn. The nine-year-old raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother's room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy remained calm and, as a fireman said later, "acted with all the self-control of a trained adult." On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving his mother. First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden. He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground flo or? Grasping firmly a ball of string from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother's room. Tying one end of the string to her hand he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the ga rden. Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan :"The string will lead you to mother." Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor. 71.Why did Glenn run downstairs first? A.He wanted to find out what was happening. B.He was worried about his mother's safety.

What’s the main idea of this passage ? What does this passage mainly discuss? What’s the topic of this passage ? 2. What’s the best title? The best title for this text is (to tell ) ______. 3. The main purpose of this text is ________. The author’s purpose of writing this text is to _______. What’s the main purpose of the passage?

The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582, in France. Before that year, the new year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25. The celebration culminated (达到高潮) on April 1. With the reform of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year’s Day was moved to January 1. However, in those days news traveled by foot, so many people did not receive the news until several years later. Others, the more obstinate (顽固的) crowd refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the new year on April 1. These backward folk were labeled as “fools” by the general p opulace (民众). They were subject to some ridicule (嘲笑). The tradition eventually spread to England and Scotland in the eighteenth century. It was later introduced to the American colonies of both the English and French. April Fool’s Day thus developed into an international fun fest (联欢会), so to speak, with different nationalities specializing in their own brand of humor at the expense of their friends and families. Pranks performed on April Fool’s Day range from the simple, (such as saying, “Your shoe’s untied!”), to the elaborate(精心制作的). Setting a roommate’s alarm clock back an hour is a common trick. Whatever the prank, the trickster usually ends it by yelling (大叫)to his victim, “April Fool!” April Fool’s Day is a “for-fun-only” observance Nobody is expected to buy gifts or to take their “significant other” out to eat in a fancy restaurant. Nobody gets off work or school. It’s simply a fun little holiday, but a holiday on which one must remain forever vigilant (警觉的), for he may be the next April Fool! 1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. New Year’s Day was celebrated on March 25 after 1582.

1) Which was the USA's strongest earthquakes ? 2) How many people lost their lives and how many people lost their homes in the 1906 earthquake ? 3) How many people lost their lives in the 1989 earthquake? 4) When the 1906 earthquake happened, how many metres did the Pacific plate jump to the north ? 5) How many measures(措施) can we take in order to deal with earthquakes ? 6) What is " The Big One"?
