Linear Motors Basic

The linear motor is a novel motor; it is a kind of transmission device with electrical energy directly

into linear motion mechanical energy. It can be seen that a rotary motor is cut open along the radial and

outreached to a planar form, as shown in Fig 4.1.2. One side evolved from the stator is called the

primary, and one side evolved from the rotor is called the secondary. In practical applications, primary

and secondary will be manufactured into different lengths to ensure the coupling between primary and

secondary unchanged in the scope of the required journey. Linear motor can be short-primary,

long-secondary may also be long-primary, short secondary. Taking into account the manufacturing costs,

operating costs, the current linear motor is usually short-primary long-secondary.

Take a rotary servo motor and unwrap it. So now what was the stator is now a forcer and the

rotor becomes a coil or magnet rail. With this design, the load is connected directly to the motor.

Direct linear motion is achieved without any rotary to linear transmission devices.

Linear motor technology is not new. Step motor and brushed linear motor products have been

available for quite some time. Brushless technology is becoming increasingly popular as applications

take advantage of its technology.
