2 Experimental
The PPC used in this work was synthesized in our laboratory with a number—average molecular weight of 88 100 and polydispersity of 2.53.The starch used was unmodified corn starch(CS).Composites with PPC/ starch wetght ratio of 65/35,50/50。40/60.30/70 were prepared by solution mixing method.A typical preparation process is as follow,150 mL chloroform was added to a 500 mL three—neck round bottom flask.
To this flask were then charged 7.5 grams of corn starch.and the mixture was slowly heated up to 50℃
under vigorous stirring followed by introducing 7.5 grams PPC pellets.Upon the PPC pellets being corn— pletely dissolved,the mixing continued for another 30 minutes.The resulting mixture was degassed under

1 Introduction

The variation of tensile strength,tensile modulus and elongation at break with the starch content in PPC/ starch composites are shown in Fig.1 and 2,respee- tively.It can be seen from Fig.1 that the modulus of PPC/starch composites inereased dramatically and line. ally with increasing starch content.However.the im. provement in the tensile modulus iS at the expense of the elongation at break for PPC/starch composites.As shown in Fig.2,the elongation at break dropped sharp— ly from 140.5%for pure PPC to 1.6%for PPC/35% starch composite.rnle tensile strength of the composites increased initially with increasing starch content up to

Abstract:Completely biodegradable composites of poly(propylene carbonate)(PPC)reinforced with unmodified corn starch were prepared by solution casting method.The effects of reinforcement on the morphology,static and dynamic mechanical properties,as well 鹳thermal properties of PPC/starch composites were investigated.Compared with pure PPC resin.the introduction of starch improved the stiffness of the composites significantly,and enhanced the tensile strength to some extent when the starch content was less than 35% (wB).Scanning electron microscopic(SEM)examination revealed the good intedacial adhesion between the fillers and PPC matrix. Gel permeation chromatography(GPC)results showed that the molecular weights of PPC matrices in composite increased compared with that of pure PPC.Moreover.experimental results indicated that the starch addition leaded to a significant improvement in the ther- real stability of the composites.
