V olunteering means spending time and effort helping somebody or something. In my case, I’ve volunteered at an animal shelter (收容所) to help feed and walk dogs.Back in 2021, some friends and I went to an animal shelter outside of Beijing. There, I wasable to give food to the animals. There were not only dogs at the shelter, such as foxes and chickens. Our main goal was to help the dogs by giving them walks. Many of the dogs were kept in big cages (笼子) along with other dogs and ate from a big bowl together. I felt a bit sad for the dogs since many of them looked old and needed a bath. However, I made sure to give one of the dogs a good walk. I remember it was a big black dog with curly hair. The dog was very gentle, but it did not want to walk very far. It was also a bit shy and just wanted to look at the other dogs. Still, when I took out a tennis ball to play fetch (捡球), it really enjoyed it. I liked watching the dog run through a group of ducks trying to get the ball back.V olunteering for the dog shelter is helpful for both the workers and the dogs. I really enjoyed my time there. I highly recommend it!9.What does volunteering mean to the author?A.Spending time and effort.B.Feeding and walking dogs.C.Remembering a black dog.D.Enjoying the time really.10.Why was the author sad for the dogs in the shelter?A.They stayed with foxes and chickens.B.They ate from the same big bowl.C.They had to sleep in some cages.D.They looked old and needed a bath. 11.How did the author probably feel while watching the dog run through ducks?A.Funny.B.Surprised.C.Relaxed.D.Hopeless. 12.What do you think the author will highly recommend according to the text?A.You should think about volunteering a lot.B.You should go to the shelter inside Beijing.C.You should try volunteering at an animal shelter too.D.You should help not only workers but also the dogs. Some people are very careful about everything they do. On the other hand, some people are risk-takers — they do things without thinking too much about the results. Teenagers especially tend to (倾向于) take more risks than others. Why is this?Anna Van Duijvenvoorde, a psychologist at Leiden University in the Netherlands, uses computer games to find out why some people are more impulsive (容易冲动的) than others. Inone game, players are asked to click on a balloon on a computer screen. Every time they click, they gets bigger. The bigger the balloon is at the end of the test, the larger their reward will be. But if the balloon gets too big, it’ll explode (爆炸) and the player will get nothing.Van Duijvenvoorde found that when teens played this game, a part of their brain called the striaturn (纹状体) would become more active. This part of the brain controls our emotional response (情绪反应) to rewards another part of the brain, the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) helps us control our decision-making process. It turns out that young people have more active striaturns and less active prefrontal cortexes, which affects their ability to make careful decisions. You might have already guessed that teens tended to pop more balloons during the game than adults — mainly because they are more willing (愿意的) to take risks and don’t take the time to think carefully.“The teen brain is like a car with a very strong engine (引擎),” Van Duijvenvoorde said, “______”13.It’s known from the text that risk-takers belong to those who ______.A.do everything more carefully than any of the others B.do things without thinking too much about the resultsC.are too careful to do everything they can D.are careful enough to do everything they can 14.In order to know why some people are more impulsive than others, Van Duijvenvoorde______.A.asks some players to do a computer game B.works as a psychologist at LeidenUniversityC.clicks on a balloon on a computer screen D.tries to make balloons explode more easily 15.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in the text?A.players B.balloons C.adults D.teens16.What do you think Van Duijvenvoorde would say finally?A.But they are not good at driving.B.People might guess them easily.C.Its brakes (刹车) just don’t work as well.D.It took them more time to think carefully.阅读短文,从文后所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。
Taking the subway in Shanghai is an experience that many people have come to appreciate due to its efficiency, convenience, and affordability.Heres a detailed English composition about the experience of traveling by subway in Shanghai.Title:A Journey Through Shanghais UndergroundShanghai,a bustling metropolis,is known for its impressive skyline and vibrant city life. One of the most efficient ways to navigate this vast city is through its extensive subway system. My recent experience of taking the subway in Shanghai left me with a profound appreciation for this mode of transportation. The Beginning of the JourneyMy journey began at the Peoples Square Station,a major hub in the heart of the city. The station was bustling with activity, yet surprisingly organized. The signs were clearly marked in both English and Chinese, making it easy for foreigners to navigate the system.I purchased a singletrip ticket from the automated ticket machines, which were userfriendly and accepted both cash and card payments.Navigating the SystemThe subway map was comprehensive, detailing every station and line with precision. The Shanghai Metro operates multiple lines, each colorcoded for easy identification.I was traveling on Line2,which connects the city center to the Pudong International Airport. The frequency of the trains was impressive they arrived every few minutes, ensuring minimal waiting time for passengers. The Subway RideBoarding the train was a smooth process. The platforms were spacious, and there were clear markings indicating where the train doors would open.Inside the train, the carriages were clean, welllit, and airconditioned, providing a comfortable ride even during the peak hours.Announcements were made in both Mandarin and English, informing passengers of the next station and any changes in the service.Observations During the JourneyOne of the most striking aspects of the subway ride was the diversity of the passengers. From business professionals to tourists, from students to elderly locals, the subway catered to a wide range of people. There was an unspoken rule of maintaining a quiet and respectful environment within the train, which made for a peaceful commute.Exiting the SubwayUpon reaching my destination,I followed the clear exit signs to leave the platform. The subway stations were equipped with elevators and escalators, making them accessible for people with mobility issues. The integration of technology was evident with digital screens displaying realtime information about train arrivals and departures. ConclusionThe Shanghai subway system is a testament to the citys commitment to modern infrastructure and efficient public transportation. It offers a fast, reliable, and costeffective means of getting around the city.My journey was not only a practical experience but also a cultural one, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Shanghais residents and visitors alike. In conclusion, taking the subway in Shanghai is more than just a means of transportation its an experience that encapsulates the essence of this dynamic city.Whether youre a local or a tourist, the subway is an indispensable part of exploring and understanding Shanghai.。
