Unit 4 SharingⅠ.阅读理解APatients in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease often struggle to remember recently learned information, meaning they forget things like important appointments or where they left their keys. But it seems that these memories are not lost. They are still filed away in the brain somewhere; they just can't be easily accessed. Now, researchers at MIT have developed a means of getting back me mories in mice suffering from Alzheimer's. The method relies on a technique that uses light to control genetically modified neurons (转基因神经元). Currently it is too early to be used in human trials as it involves inserting light emitting(发光) equipment into the subjects' brains, but the same principles still apply, the researchers said.“The important point is that this is evidence of the concept. That is, even if a memory seems to be gone, it is still there. It's a matter of how to get i t back,”said the senior researcher Susumu Tonegawa. The team took two groups of mice, one genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer's and one healthy. They then placed them into a room and gave them a mild electric shock. All of the mice showed fear when put back an hour later. When placed in the room a third time several days later, the Alzheimer's mice acted normally. They had forgotten the shock. The researchers were then able to bring back the memory of the shock by activating(激活) the cells in which the memories were stored. Even when the mice were put into an unfamiliar room, they showed fear when the cells associated with the shock were activated.“Shortterm memories seem to be normal in order of hours. But for longterm memories, these earlyAlzheimer's mice seem to be damaged,”said the lead researcher Dheeraj Roy.“Directly activating the cells that we believe are holding the memory helps them get it back. This suggests that it is indeed an access problem to the information, not that they are unable to learn or store this memory.”[语篇解读] 本文主要介绍了利用光控制转基因神经元使早老性痴呆病患者恢复记忆的技术。

Unit 4 SharingⅠ.阅读理解A[2020·合肥高三第二次质量检测]A simple project to help a family in need stopped Luke Mickelson in his tracks. In 2012, he and his family were inspired to build and donate a bunk bed, one bed on top of the other, after learning there were local children who slept on the floor. Shocked to discover how widespread this need was in his community, Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need.Born and raised in Idaho, Mickelson, now 41, had a thriving career. He coached his kids' sports teams and fished in the nearby river. But when he met children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course.Using safety guidelines and his daughter's bunk bed as a model, Mickelson started buying wood and supplies to build beds with his own money. He recruited friends and family members to help around the holidays. As the word spread, interest and involvement from his and other communities flooded — along with Mickelson's bunk bed output. “That first project, we built 11 bunk beds in my garage,〞 he said. “The next year, we did 15. Then it doubled every year. In 2017, we built 612 bunk beds.〞With the motto “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town〞, the nonprofit and its more than 65 branches have built and delivered more than 1,500 free beds to children across America. But along with the rapid growth, Mickelson was faced with a tough choice: advancing his career or his nonprofit. He chose the latter and went from making “great money to zero mo ney〞. He's never looked back. “I found that the need I have isn't financial,〞he said. “The need I have is seeing the joy on kids' faces, knowing that I can make a difference.〞1.Why did Mickelson set up Sleep in Heavenly Peace?A.To help the poor children.B.To make a big fortune.C.To inspire his community.D.To get more donations.2.What do we know about Luke Mickelson?A.He had his own fish farm.B.He changed his career from time to time.C.He used to sleep on the floor when he was a kid.D.He originally had a relaxing and pleasant life.3.How did other people react to Mickelson's project?A.They showed little interest in it.B.They were supportive and involved in it.C.They were doubtful about the safety of the bunk bed.D.They volunteered to buy beds with their own money.4.What is Mickelson's attitude to the nonprofit?A.Ambiguous. Among the highlights this year is the “Spruce Woods〞 suite. Sculpted by Christopher Pascoe and Jennie O'Keefe of Canada, it describes a camping scene complete with a classic microbus, a forest, and even an artificial campfire. There is also the artfullycarved “Living Ocean〞 suite to remind visitors of the importance of saving our oceans. The room is full of carved sea life that includes coral and a shark “swimming〞right over the ice bed. “The suite is inspired by global warming and the overfishing that affects our oceans,〞 says artist Jonathan Paul Green. “I also think the idea of using frozen water from a river in north ernSweden to create an ocean with shells, fish, and coral is exciting.〞The nearby “Haven〞suite is a “magical gate of ice〞 guarded by two large animals. “We are inspired by the meeting between people and want to create an experience that stimulates curiosity and creativity,〞 says artist Jonas Johansson. “It feels like a dream to get to work with ice that allows our love for light, shine, and reflection to wander freely from thought to creation.〞Regardless of whether visitors select the carved suites or the basic ice rooms, the temperature is always set to a bonechilling -5 ℃! That is why guests are advised to snuggle(蜷伏) up inside sleeping bags and wear gloves and winter hats all night. Not surprisingly, most end up spending just a single night at this unique hotel before moving on to the conventional and warmer hotels nearby.5.What does the underlined phrase “bucket list〞 mean in the text?A.A shopping list of buckets.B.A list of travelling destinations.C.A list of expensive hotels.D.A list of exciting ideas.6.What can we know about the icehotel?A.It is rebuilt every year.B.Its rooms are expensive.C.It organizes camping activities.D.It lies in a coastal city.7.Where does the inspiration of “Living Ocean〞 suite come from?A.Art and literature.B.Ocean life and voyages.C.Climate change and human influence.D.The meeting of people.8.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.An Adventure to the North PoleB.An Experience Close to NatureC.A Taste of Cold: A Night in a VillageD.A Winter Destination: Sweden's IcehotelⅡ.完形填空[2020·济南市高三学习质量针对性检测]When I was young, my understanding of life was simple. Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its squirrel bridge. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars. The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day's coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会). The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere jokingly named the bridge “Nutty Narrows”.After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started construction. They built the 60foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire h ose(消防水带). It cost $1,000.It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching_them_the_ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the wornout bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.Peters died in 1984, and a tenfoot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.15. Some people said it was an expected thing while others asked: Why now? What will you do?For me, making the move to Israel is the fulfillment of a dream that has lasted for my 47 years of life. I have always known that Israel is my home. Over the years Israel has been in my heart, but I have found a number of reasons to put off making it my permanent residence: kids, the economy, education...you name an excuse, and at some point I have probably used it.Truthfully, I believe that I was always just a little bit scared. And of course I still am, with the fear factor that is reported by the press surrounding the Israeli military and economy. However, it has come to the point when I have realized that for over 2 000 years we yearned for this land, and for 47 years I have denied the opportunity to make it my home. I am finally ready to fully grasp this opportunity.Over the years, I have always loved visiting Israel. I have traveled there with my family, and enjoyed introducingthousands of travelers to the country. And as far as waiting for the "perfect"condition under which to make aliyah, I believe the time is now!I have been asked many times if I am nervous about movingto Israel. Before I answer, I remember that we have overcomethe Greeks, the Romans, the Russian killings, Hitler and the Holocaust(大屠杀), and the armies of seven countries. How can I not feel confident that I, and my family, will overcome any difficulties that may come our way? the summer learning gap. Some call it thesummer learning setback.Put simply,it means the longer kidsare out of school, the more they forget. The only thing theymight gain is weight.Recent studies show that children gain weight more quickly in the summer vacation than when they are in school. Most American schools follow a traditional ninemonth calendar.Students get winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a yearround calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. But many experts point out that the number of class days in a yearround school is generally the same as in a traditional school.Last year,a study at Ohio State University reported that yearround students did not learn any more than other students.Lead researcher Paul von Hippel said “yearround schools don’t really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spre ad it out across the year”.Across the country, the research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer vacation than other students.Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer the programs that can help. But calling them “summer schools” could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins,Ron Fairchild, recently wrote about this issue on his blog.He said that in American culture, the idea of the summer vacation is connected to the beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. He said a research on groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term summer school. They said it created an image of children being forced to do work they missed during the school year.36.Which of the Seattle has its Space Needle. They built the 60foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose(消防水带). It cost $1,000.It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching_them_the_ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapersall over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the wornout bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, h undreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.Peters died in 1984, and a tenfoot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.20. Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient—no matter where he or she may be.Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(症状)is the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(远程诊断)will be based on real physiological data(生理数据)from the actual patients. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural (countryside) care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster needs—especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing the global access to medical data and experts’ opinions. But there is one problem. Bandwidth(宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex medical pictures around the world, —CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second generation Internet and the third generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of m edical information, experts’ opinions and diagnosis are common. 【文章大意】本文主要讲述人们将来可以在网上看病, 医生可以根据病人的生理数据做出远程诊断。

课时提升作业三十四选修7Unit 4Sharing(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AWith golden sunshine and a gentle breeze, autumn is the most beautiful season in the year. This is a great time to go outside and have fun. Go to a valley to see red maple trees, go and pick fruit in an orchard or find an open field to fly your kite in.However, for many high school students, these great activities may be just a dream. With plenty of work to do, they spend all their hours indoors, struggling for a high mark in their exams. Of course, study is one of the most important things for teenagers. But life is definitely much more than that.Sometimes we spend so much time studying that we forget how to make life wonderful. In doing so, we lose the real purpose of life —to be a valuable and happy person. To enjoy just how great it is to be alive, we have to put down our books and pens and look around us.Going out and enjoying the beautiful countryside often helps our creativity in our work. Chinese craftsman, Lu Ban, created a saw to help woodworkers. But if he hadn’t walked outside, he would not have been inspired by a kind of toothed grass. We could also suppose if Newton hadn’t rested under that apple tree, then hewouldn’t have been hit by an apple, and his classic theories would not have come out.Going out is not only a break from hard work, but a chance to add to life experience. So come on, give your brain a good rest. Step out of the books and get your bag ready for an autumn outing. We are sure you will get much more than knowledge from the exciting journey.【文章大意】文中作者列举了当今高中生忙于学习没时间外出的现状, 说明了外出会有很多收获, 鼓励学生们走出去, 去获取更多东西。
