I usually kept to myself, had only a few friends, and rarely spoke in class. My parents were always very busy, so they never pushed me to become more involved in activities and meet more people. I was perfectly happy by myself. I spent much of my time with my nose buried in a book. The only times that I ventured away from the comforts of my bedroom were when I explored the seemingly endless aisles of stocked bookshelves at my favourite bookstore. In retrospect, it was no surprise that I read with such an incredible appetite. Reading was my escape. My favourite books were adventure and travel stories—stories that brought the readers to exotic, unexplored, or dangerous places. These were places I longed to go, and they were adventures I yearned to experience, but I knew it was all just a fantasy. I had a hard time working up the nerve to talk to a fellow classmate, I knew there was no way I could travel around the world and live out one of these adventures. Therefore, I read. I read every book I could find that promised adventure, excitement, or escape. By the time I graduated from high school, I had probably read more books than our school had in its library. It was quite an achievement, but no one knew about it except for me. I told no one because I had no one to tell. My only friend was Justin, and that relationship only existed because we had been next-door neighbours for fifteen years.Like most of my classmates, I applied to college and eventually worked up the courage to go. It wasn't easy. I had lived at home with my parents my whole life, and I rarely ever thought about leaving. However, it had finally become inevitable; I couldn't stay with them forever. I attended a local college and moved out to live in a dormitory with a roommate. It would be an understatement to say that I was nervous. I was terrified. My roommate's name was Greg, and the first few weeks of school were very awkward. He kept trying to start conversations and be friendly. I was able to answer his questions, of course, but I found it difficult to keep the conversation going. I just wasn't used to it—I had no practice at this sort of thing. Then one day I returned from an afternoon class and found him reading a Jack London book. Suddenly, I found that I had ahundred questions to ask Greg. Did he like Jack London? Which was his favourite book? Did he read a lot? What other authors did he like? The list was endless. To my surprise, Greg was also in love with adventure and travel books. One of his dreams was to travel around the world and follow in the footsteps of some of history's greatest explorers. There must have been magic at work that day. It was as if my shyness suddenly disappeared. Greg and I talked for hours about our favourite books and dreams of travel. I also found it easier to talk to other people at school and make friends since that day. I felt like the world opened up to me. So many things suddenly seemed possible. In fact, Greg and I are planning a great adventure for this summer! It may have taken me a while, but I finally found a way to break out of my shell and start enjoying life.41.
As a foreigner doing business in the United States, I feel very rushed. I am used to friendly opening exchanges when doing business. Here in Chicago, things are different. There is no time for getting to know each other. This does not seem L1 to me. There is no chance to develop a sense of trust when people meet to talk over issues. There are no C2 like tea or coffee before discussing business, though this is a D3 in my country. When we discuss business it starts with a N4 chat. I think that it is important for business partners to get familiar with each other first and to feel relaxed. If the exchange is too O5 , there is a risk that something will be forgotten. Some possibilities go without being A6 when there is too much pressure. I don’t believe this is the best strategy for proper communication. Besides, the E7 is that they just don’t care about you as an individual here. You are basically just another G8 of making money. All of this used to create a real I9 for me. At first, it caused me to have a little __K10__ with American business partners as possible. Gradually, though, I have come to understand the cultural differences between our two countries. This has really helped me to feel more comfortable doing business here.Keys: L C D N O A E G I K3、汉译英1她连水都不愿喝一口,更别提留下来吃饭了。

1单元I, for one, am from ready to use online courses for my learning. Don’t get me wrong.I am very happy about all the communication and learning opportunities the courses have given us. But for me those opportunities should not be used to replace classroom activities. In other words, they are only tools to help me learn what has already been served in the classroom.I love the classroom. I love classmates. There are forty students in my class right now, and I think it’s great. I even love having classmates who are better than me. And, let’s not forget the smell of ink on paper , the sound of chalk on a blackboard, the hardness of a wooden bench or the heat inside the classroom in early September. I love it all. But most of all,I love having a teacher—a “real live”teacher. I get excited when I am in the classroom with a good teacher. I learn in a way that has been proven to work. I am given insight not only into a certain subject, but also into the world. What makes having a classroom teacher so .special? A good teacher pushes me to succeed. A good teacher rewards me with praise when I have done well and stays positive and gives me hope when I am down .I don’t believe that a teacher using a virtual classroom can .reach out tome in the same way. A teacher communicating.through the Internet cannot share the same type of relation a classroom teacher and student share.I guess that I am lucky to have access to so many excellent classroom teachers. I will never forget the kindness and commitment that those teachers have shown me. Their examples make it hard for me to accept away of learning that does not include them. It was 1981, and (1)although there might have been a couple of news stories about a new disease, AIDS wasn't a real (2)concern yet. Over the (3)next couple of years, news stories about AIDS became very common, (4)however, they did not provide very much helpful information. (5)Rather, the media was happy to report stories that confirmed (6)whatever racial or sexual prejudices we may have had. There were stories about monkeys in Africa (7)being the source of the disease and it was most commonly believed that only sex between two men could spread the disease. The understanding was (8)that the only protective steps someone would need to take were to stay away from gay (同性恋的) men and monkeys. This lack (9)of serious information and education about the disease led to prejudice and unsafe sexual behaviors by many.(10)By the time I reached college, the cat was out of the bag, men and women having sex together could also be (11)infected with the disease. Sex education had taken (12)on a more serious meaning; now it was about protecting yourself from disease. Still the prejudices (13)remained. Although common contact between individuals including kissing was considered safe, most were afraid to (14)come in contact with others who had AIDS. It is commonly believed that prejudice kept the government (15)from acting more quickly to offer better education and do scientific research. Since that time, education and funding for research has improved, but prejudice and misinformation cost us a lot of time in getting started.Y our answers Correct answers 1. although 2. concern 3. next 4. however 5. I have heard just about as much complaint about today’s workplace I can take Contrary to the viewyoung people seem to have that things were better for prior generations, the fact is that there have never been so many greats job for people wanting to enter the workforce. There are educational opportunities that have never exist before , and the standard of living is getting better all the time. Frankly, people who lack courage and commitment shouldn’t blame anyone but themselves for not taking the opportunities that are there for them.My first job was working as a trashman . I hauled trash for six years before I got promoted to the position of manager. I wasn’t scared of hard work. By the time the day was finished , my shoulder would hurt ,but I never complainted I even assisted others and worked extra hours when I was needed .Unfortunately , young people today seem to be lacking the same desire I had to work hard.I can boast that I never quit a job without being offered a better one. We can’t all start out at the top. Most of us need to pay out dues and work from the bottom up. After managing the small company for which I hauled garbage I found a job with the city public works office managing a small department. Now ,after 25 years of working in the garbage business , I manage all of the city’s trash removal. Along the way I learned that a job well done is never looked down on, and the person who does it will always triumph.Where is the “can do”attitude that makes our country great ? It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you work hard and do your best .Y oung people need to commence with finding a line of employment that needs them , and quit looking for perfection in their initial position. If work were supposed to be enjoyable, it wouldn’t be called “work”.7单元I was walking from the door of my apartment building to the corner store. All of a sudden, a slight man wearing a stocking cap leaped from behind a (1)parked car and stuck a pistol, or at least what I thought was a gun, into my side. My heart beat fast, and I became very light-headed. It was (2)as if I was in a dream and my body was not attached to my brain. (3)Instinctively, I raised my hands in the air, though he didn't tell me to do so or say anything at all; he just reached around and (4)searched the back pocket of my trousers for anything (5)valuable.The next thing I knew was he was gone, and (6)so was my wallet. And then I just stood there with my heart pounding and my head spinning (头晕) for (7)what seemed to be an eternity. I heard the footsteps and the cough of a man walking past, which then (8)faded away. I became more (9)conscious of where I was, and then, all at once, I could feel my legs (10)trembling. I moved sideways to the steps of the closest building and sat down.Other victims may have felt angry or frightened, but I was just confused. I hadn't been (11)hurt or even hit. He wanted my money, so he took my money and left. There was no "Give me your money (12)or I'll shoot" like in the movies. He was fast, he was silent, and he was gone. I tried to remember the (13)details of what had just happened, but it all happened (14)so fast that it seemed to have not happened at all. I wasn't even sure if the man had a gun or not. I wouldn't be able to (15)identify theoffender even if he were standing right in front of me.A few minutes later, I called and (16)reported the robbery to the police operator. An officer called me back after an hour for (17)additional details. He asked me if there was anything unusual about the man who had (18)robbed me, but I couldn't accurately describe the man.The next day, I went to the police station and looked through alb ums of photos of criminals who had (19)committed similar robberies. (20)Accurately, there had been several similar robberies in my neighborhood in the past couple of weeks by a man who had an odd hat. I didn't remember a hat, and I was unable to identify the man who robbed me.1. parked2. as if3. And, like most people, I have a (2)hard time dragging myself from my bed or even rolling over to write some of (3)what I have dreamt in a notebook that I have left on the nightstand. I have often tried, but most of the time I am unable to do (4)justice to my dream. The dream is always (5) more detailed than what I write down. Dreams are like water; the different parts of your (6)unconscious brain just seem to flow together into strange stories.I have a hard time (7)explaining explain why things in my dreams happen. (8) Why is there a dog in a pink dress running up the stairs in a church I've never been in before? Why do I often fly in my dreams, (9) as though I am driving a car that (10)does not exist, in a sitting position only a few feet from the ground? The following is an even greater (11)mystery: why do dreams feel so real when I am dreaming and shortly after I wake up, but make (12) less sense the longer I am awake? Sometimes my dreams really tell a story and I am completely (13) entertained fun of. I say to (14) myself right after I wake up, "Wow, that would (15) make a great movie." I try to hold (16) on to the story, but it isn't easy. As soon as I get a chance, I tell the story to the next person I see. I am always surprised when they are (17) not impressed . They say something like, "Well, I'm sure it was very meaningful for you." Either I have failed to (18) capture the dream with my words, or the dream is only important to me. I guess we are all (19) seeking a little meaning in our dreams: some deep dark (20) secret we have hidden in our subconscious or a recipe for our own happiness. When the lecture was over, students (4) ____ the professor. So it is obvious that they were (5) ____. These exercises include such activities as listening to special music while sleeping. He also (9) ____ vitamins. Everything (10) ____ is sold by Warrick himself. As one can imagine, Warrick has (11) ____ greatly by selling products to hopeful students. Already, he has made millions of dollars. And his lecture (12) ____ have made him a national hero. This wouldn't be bad if he was actually (13) ____ students. If students were reaching the peaks he promised, there wouldn't be a problem.
