孔子曰：“豫则立，不豫则废”，意思是凡事如果不做好计划，必将失败。老祖宗的话今天已经成为了工商管理界的金科玉律。能否成功地使用笔者的背单词的方法的关键，就在于能否作出周密的计划，并且坚决的执行下去

笔者现在以最经典地红宝书为例，系统地讲解一下背单词地全过程。

红宝书共51个List，每个List在12－13页之间。平均每个List有121个单词，平均每页10个。请本书的读者在第一次背单词的时候，为自己定下的记忆标准一定不能太高。过高的标准只能增加学习者的记忆量，降低工作效率，挫伤其信心，有百害而无一利。有些同学喜欢第一遍背单词的时候就把拼写，音标，英文翻译全部都背下来，背一个单词需要好几分钟，被单词的效率自然很低。对于GRE和GMAT的考生而言，前两者（拼写和发音）根本没有必要完全记住，有模糊记忆即可，因为这两种考试对单词的考察标准只是再认而已，除了个别的形近词之外（如：ascent/accent/assent），背词者根本不必去研究其准确的拼写和发音，而应该把自己的记忆标准定位于再认（识别）。

至于英文释义，笔者认为一定要看，但是在一个大的背词周期结束以前（约一个月左右），除非是对这个单词的中文释义不理解，否则不适合去研究，原因很简单，因为学习者此时的单词量还不够，对于大多数英文释义都存在着理解上的问题。

初记单词时需要记忆的内容是：

1．单词的外观特征，达到能够识别此单词即可。比如单词的长短，起始字母，特征（如中间有两个元音ee）等等。就比如我们认人，我们只要大致知道一个人的性别，高矮，胖瘦，老幼，服装，就能够知道是张三还是李四。而他到底身高1.83还是1.84米，体重是160斤还是150斤根本就不需要知道。实际上，我们人类的识别系统极其发达，有的时候即使我们对一个人的特征数据一点也说不出来。对于单词也是如此，只要看到时能够认识它，就达到了背单词的目的。而且随着日后对单词不断地重复，我们对单词的记忆慢慢加深，到那时你自然就会在不经意间记住很多单词的拼写和发音。
