Purpose and goal:

This course is designed with a practical goal: to train students in the techniques of experimental phonetic in order to prepare them for more advance research in phonetics and phonology within linguistics, speech technology, communication disorder, and language acquisition. It will provide the student with hands-on experience in methods of experimental phonetic research, including audio recording, acoustic speech database construction, recording and interpreting speech air flow and pressure, static palatography, and the design of perception tests. In addition, students receive training in writing up experimental results for publication.

Prerequisites:

It is better for you to have finished ‘Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology’and ‘Experimental Phonology and Sound Change’ which I taught last year at Zhejiang and Shanghai Universities, before you take this course..

Since this is a bilingual course (required text, reading materials, homework assignments, project introduction written in English; but don’t worry, you cou ld use Chinese to answer questions and write the project, etc.), a good English-reading ability is obligatorily required for all students who enroll in the course.

Coursework:

Reading assignments; in-class participation; six group homework projects.

Homework projects: The class will be divided into research teams who will work on homework projects together. One student of the team will presents results during the lectures for each topic. The homework projects are the focus of the course, and will occupy much of our time together in the class meetings. The projects are designed to be specific enough to be doable, while introducing students to general research methods in experimental phonetics. Each student should turn in a final project based on his/her own interesting topic related the experimental phonetics in the end of the long semester.
