Some people believe that your nationality can influence your personality. This is why you might hear someone saying “She is a typical(典型的) Australian” or “He is so French”. It seems that people from a certain country share certain similar characteristics.

French

and wine. They are good at singing and dancing.

Chinese

Chinese are friendly people who are hard-working. They are polite because they are careful about “saving face” when dea ling with other people.

Australians

表格填词练习五

In common with many countries, Britain has serious environmental proble ms. In 1952, more than 4,000 people died in London because of the smog. The government introduced new laws to stop smog from coal fires and factories and the situation improved a lot.

Today, London is much cleaner but there is a new problem: smog from cars. In December 1991, there was very little wind in London and pollution increased a lot. As a result, about 160 people died from pollution in just four days.

Part of the problem is the new ‘o ut of town’ shopping centres. In the past, people often walked to shops near their home or went by bus. Now, many people drive to the new shopping

centres. As a result, the small shops have disappeared and more people have to travel to do their shopping.

Critics say that Britain needs better and cheaper public transport. Transport in Britain is very expensive. An early morning train trip from Glasgow to London (about 600km) can cost about

£100, for example. A short 15-minute bus trip can cost over £1.00.

Many people are trying to reduce the use of cars in Britain. Some cities now have special bicycle paths and many people cycle to work. Some people also travel to work together in one car to reduce the pollution and the cost.

表格填词练习六

In the deserts of North Africa and Saudi Arabia lives the smallest of all foxes with the largest of ears. This animal is the fennec fox.

Fennec foxes have ears that are 5 to 6 inches long. That’s big for an animal that weighs less than four pounds. Their ears help shed(去除)body heat. And, as you may have guessed, they also provide great hearing.

It’s also interesting to think about the hair of fennec foxes. Why would a fox that lives in the desert need a thick, fur c oat? Actually, the desert isn’t always warm. During the nighttime, a desert can be terribly cold! A fennec fox’s fur keeps them warm during those desert nights. They also have long bushy tails that they use as a blanket. And the hair on their feet protects them from the hot sand in the daytime.

Fennec foxes live in small communities of dens(兽穴).They spend most of the day sleeping in their dens, out of the hot sun. Then, when night comes, they come out in search of food. In addition to their great hearing, fennecs also use their great sense of smell and big eyes to track down dinner.

Like other foxes, fennecs are omnivores. This means they eat both meat and plants. They like eating birds, eggs, insects, snails, fruit and leaves best.

Fennec fox mothers have one to five babies at a time. The lifespan of a fennec fox is 10 to 12 years. The cream coloration of fennec foxes help them blend into their desert habitat. Still, they have to watch out for predators(捕食性动物). These include caracals ( a type of wild cat ) ,

jackals, eagle owls, hyenas and humans. Humans catch them for their fur and to sell as pets.

Nowadays in school life,a lot of students develop a fear of tests. It’s not because

tests are something to be afraid of. Most students are afraid of tests mainly because they don’t have enough self-confidence and they don’t always think they are well prepared. If you follow the tips below, it’s not difficult to overcome(克服)your fear of tests.

People who know that they are not well-prepared are usually those who fear test m ost. However, most students don’t know when they are truly prepared for a test. As long as(只要)you know that you have studied well and long enough, you have reason to believe that you are well-prepared.

Be confident about yourself. Confidence before a test can bring about two things: either you fail the test and feel as if your confidence was unfounded(毫无根据)or you could actually do well in the test because of your confidence. Some students find that they experience the first result. However, this is only because those students might not have followed the first tip mentioned above. As long as you have studied well, you will be more confident of your chance to succeed in a test. If you feel as if you have not studied hard enough, then you will not be as confident as you should be.

Ask your teacher in advance(提前)about the material that is going to be covered in the test. In this way, you will know what you should prepare for and you can get confidence in the test. But you have to be brave enough to ask. Most students do not ask unless their teacher gives the information first, so make sure that you ask.

You should know that tests are only telling if you have got the knowledge, not how good or bad your IQ is. So, even if you do badly in one test, you should know that there are other tests to come. As long as you think that there is another tomorrow, you can overcome your fear of a test. However, make sure that you are going to prepare well for the other tests.

Fear can be a problem in the process of achieving success. However, with the right attitude(态度) and preparations, you can overcome your fear of tests by using these tips.

Literature is a word used to describe written as well as spoken material. Generally speaking, it is often used to describe anything from creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama

and fiction.

Then why read literature, since it is often imaginary and seems unconnected with real life?

A lot of us read literature for enjoyment and relaxation. It’s always pleasant to read some interesting books in our spare time. In a modern life full of stress, it is our common wish to read some imaginary works and look for relaxation from the stress in life.

Reading literature is more than fun; it also allows us to get knowledge. As a general rule, literature represents a language of a people, and it often gives us an insight(洞察力) into the traditions, attitudes and values of the age in which it was written.

Sometimes literature can even offer us new, creative ways to have a better understanding of the world. It introduces us to new worlds of experiences. We enjoy the comedy and the tragedy of poems, stories and plays; and we may even grow through our literary journey with books. At last we may discover meaning in literature by looking at what the writer says and how he or she says it. In some ways, we explore the human condition and analyze(分析) the way they think and feel the way they feel. Literature helps us think clearly and encourages us to open minds.

So we can certainly say literature is of great importance to us. Why not get going with one

The Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Some parents send their children to the best schools or even foreign countries, for example, England, the US or Australia although it costs much. Many also want their children to take after-school activities. Their children either learn a musical instrument(乐器)or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is , the better it is, so parents often spend a big amount of money on education. Even poor couples buy a computer for their son or daughter.

However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents should kn ow their children’s various skills. Children will usually be good in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize is that today’s children lack(缺乏)confidence.

The problem is that parents only care about their children on how to achieve high marks in exams. They are not teaching children the most important skills that can be helpful to their

growth. These skills also can build their confidence.

Parents can help achieve this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, cleaning

and other housework.

Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life.

Cooking requires patience and time. It is a pleasant but difficult experience. A good cook

always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and successfully finish his job

step by step. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give a child a lot of satisfaction and

confidence.

An old machine such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child as a toy may make

him curious. If he spends hours looking at it and trying to repair it, your child might become an

engineer when he grows up. It’s better to do such activities than teach a child to read a book.

It seems that a family just isn’t complete (完整的) without a pet. But if pets aren’t suitable to

a family’s lifestyle or environm ent, they can quickly lead to problems such as stress or arguments

(争执). To save yourself and your family such problems, treat this decision seriously.

When c hoosing a pet, people must consider the family’s health. Many

people are allergic (过敏的) to cats and dogs. Perhaps a dog or cat with short

hair will be fine. And a dog might not be the best choice for a child who is

naughty (顽皮的) because the dog might bite him or her. Some people can

also have problems with certain pets. It’s a good idea to spend a l ittle time

with the pet around each member of the family before making your decision.

Consider the quality of life of the pet, too. If a pet is used to having space to run around, it

can quickly develop psychological (心理的) problems when it is kept in a small flat all day. If pets

are allowed to run about in areas with lots of traffic, they can meet an early end. Cats shouldn’t be

brought into homes that already have large dogs because they won’t be able to get along well with

each other.

The decision as to what kind of pet to choose is very important. If you find the right one to

your decision is important because it can have effects that last for many years.

Every scientist has a childhood dream. A scientist in China once had a

dream. He wished to grow a new type of rice. This new type of rice would

be as big as peanuts. This person is Yuan Longping —"Father" of Hybrid

rice(杂交水稻).

Yuan Longping was born in 1930. He graduated from the Southwest

Agricultural (农业) University in 1953. He came up with an idea for a Hybrid rice in the 1960s.

Since then, he has devoted himself to research and to the development of new varieties.

In 1973, together with other people, he succeeded in the development of Hybrid rice. This made

China a worldwide leader in rice production(生产). In 1980, the technology (技术) for hybrid, rice

was introduced to the United States. Now his "super rice" has been introduced to more than 20

other countries.

Because of Professor Yuan's hard work, China now produces enough rice to feed her people

every year. Last November an online survey showed that most Chinese believed that Yuan

deserved (应得) a Nobel Peace Prize. In his spare time, Yuan Longping loves playing the violin and listening to music. Every night,

he reads for half an hour before he goes to sleep. He likes swimming, too. It is said that Professor

Summer is coming soon. When is the best time for swimming in the day in summer?

If you would like to swim indoors, a good time in the day is the early hours – the body

has the most energy to use because the body has woken up and will be ready for all

kinds of different activities of the day. The body is going to work with enough energy

and therefore a person will feel more comfortable if he swims during the early hours

of the day.

Swimming early in the day can also be good for anyone who plans to swim outdoors.

The conditions outside will be excellent: the water will not be too cold or too hot, and

the air will be just clean and fine. Everything is suitable.

Usually, it is not a good idea to swim later in the day because one’s body is tired after

work for a whole day and also the weather conditions can be the worst in the later

parts of the day.

However, there are still some exceptions. Different people feel different and one’s

body acts differently at different times of the day. When a person is feeling active and

is not tired at all after work, it may be a better time to swim for him than for others. If

he is alert (警觉的) that time, he is safe in the water.

In a word, the best time can change for every person. The person’s body condition

How important is homework?

According to the Los Angeles Unified

School District(LAUSD), it’s not that important! The district has made a

big change for the 2011-2012 school year. It started on July 1,

homework counts for only 10% of a student’s grade. The district, the

second largest in the country, says its new way can provide a fairer

assessment(评定) of students’ homework and achievements.

The district hopes students only need to spend less time on homework and more time on hobbies and with their families. By reducing the weight of homework toward a student’s grade, a truer picture of the student’s knowledge will be shown in the achievement grade.

However, it doesn’t mean the students can throw out homework. It says that homework is a chance for students to practice their skills and a tool for students to prepare for coming lessons. Still, LAUSD is joining a growing list of schools that have controlled the amount of homework.

How much time children should spend on homework is a hot topic. Harris Cooper, a professor at a university, says that the proper amount of homework time is ten minutes a day multiplied by(乘以) the student’s grade. This means a third grader should spend 30 minutes a day on homework. And a sixth grader would spend 60 minutes. “Good homework in the proper amount will have better effects on them,” he said. “Bad homework or too much homework will have worse effects.”

But some people think homework is an important part of learning. They say many children just won’t try their best if homework doesn’t count toward their grade. Some teachers also think homework is important. They argue that students who do their homework perform better on tests and in school than those who do not. They are

It seems school children all over the world complain about their school food. Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, said that she would prepare a packed lunch for her son if school dinners do not improve. So what do students of your age eat for lunch at school?

Japan

High schools have canteens, which serve everything from noodles to rice, but not burgers and chips. Other children bring food from home such as cold rice balls, meat or fish, pickles(泡菜) and vegetables.

Students take home a menu for the coming month containing notes on nutrition value. Twice a year parents are invited to have a taste of the food. The class with the fewest leftovers(剩饭) at the end of the month receives a prize.

United States

A typical menu from a US school is made up of a hamburger with fried potatoes or roast chicken, lettuce and pickles, fruit and cookies. School lunches must also provide at least one-third of the daily dietary allowances(定量) of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories.

Australia

Meat pies, sausage rolls and hot dogs are all traditional dishes in Australian school shops. But as the nation pays more attention to children’s health, healthier foods have started to find their way onto school menus.

Many schools have used a traffic light system. The sale of red-labelled foods, including pastries, chocolate and soft drinks, is served only twice a week. Healthier green-labelled foods such as sushi, sandwiches, corn and watermelon, however, are available every day.

In some schools, students have a choice of up to 89 foods to choose from, including popcorn and rice.

South Africa

Most of South Africa’s schools do not serve meals at all. Classes end at 1:30 pm and students get their own lunches. Many students bring food from home, usually sandwiches.

Fast food and fried food sell the best among students, which has led to a rise in obesity among children. But as more people began to realize the fact that being too fat may cause different diseases, some schools in towns have led the way towards better nutrition(营养). Now students at these schools are provided with lunches of porridge

Different cultures make different families. For example, there are differences in the way Chinese and Americans raise children.

First, Chinese and American families have different attitudes towards independence (独立). Each Chinese child has been considered to be the apple of parents’ eyes. It is not surprising to see Chinese parents always helping their children with getting

dressed, having meals, bathing, and other things. American parents, on the other hand, teach their children how to do things alone from childhood.

Second, most Chinese parents often make their children have extra classes, such as piano, drawing, or singing lessons. Parents want their children to develop in an all-round way and be better students than other children. The problem is that their children may not be interested in these classes. American parents try to respect (尊重) their childr en’s interests and usually don’t make them do what they don’t like. Third, there is a difference in the way parents in China and American treat mistakes that children make. Many Chinese people believe in the saying, “Spare the rod, spoil the child (不打不成器).” When Chinese parents see their children make mistakes, they often get very angry, some even hit them instead of making them realize their mistakes. This affects the children’s growth and the forming of their character, and also makes the generations gap (代沟) wide. American parents think it is common for people to make mistakes because mistakes are a part of life. They often say, “It’s OK to make mistakes. Making mistakes helps you learn.” They help their children deal with mistakes by giving them ideas about how to turn mistakes into learning opportunities (机会).

Families in China and America are quite different, and one way may seem better than the other, but it is better to think about whether the parents fit the family or not instead

In the past two days, I’ve been to two very different bookstores. They were both in Beijing, and both attracted people in their 20s and 30s. So why were they so different? Because one store was for Chinese people, and one was for Westerners.

At the Western bookstore, in Sanlitun, the books put on display in front–the ones expected to be the most popular–were biographies (传记), books about history, and

books about politics and current (现在的) events. Farther back, there was a big shelf full of novels.

At the Chinese store, at the Beijing airport, there were very few books on history, and books on politics and current events were even harder to find. There were a few biographies, but they seemed to be of an instructive (教育性的) nature; almost all of them were about rich people, and how they got rich. What the store did have was lots and lots of books on how to learn English.

As a Westerner, I found this surprising. The kinds of books I’m used to seeing people read– the kinds that were at the first store–are the kinds people read to escape (逃脱) their daily lives. But here most of the books were on how to get rich and how to study English–how to work better and how to study better.

These Chinese books offered no escape from daily life – only ways to improve it. Perhaps this is another area where Westerners and Chinese people can learn from each other. We Westerners could certainly read a bit more for practical purposes (目的). But I also think Chinese people might benefit (受益) from more of something my

In the United States, each farm family lives on its own fields, and often can’t see any neighbour. Instead of travelling from a village to the fields every morning, American farmers stay on their land all the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on buses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas, there are small schools serving a few families, and the children walk to school. Of course life keeps changing for everyone, including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios, and television set. And of course there are modern machines for farming. Street Markets Around the World

There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer, but for many people, the most exciting way to shop is also the most traditional—at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world. Here are four of them: There are many “floating markets” in Asia; perhaps the most unusual is in Thailand(泰国), at a place called Damned Saduak. Good morning, boys and girl. Today I’ll talk about going online.

W e know that there are too many net bars around us. The Internet can make our lives interesting and enjoyable. Many of us like going online very much because we can learn how to use the computer. We can learn English and read some newspapers and magazines to know more

around us. It can make us clever in playing computer games. Also when we can send e-mails to our friends they can get them at once. It can help us contact people from all over the world.

But some students spend too much time in playing computer games and some stay in the net bars all day and all night. Some girls even get to have boyfriends or some boys get to have girlfriends online. They write too many letters to each other. It takes them too much time to chat online so they do worse in their lessons and they don’t study well any more. I think we mustn’t get online when it is time for us to study. We can do it in summer or winter holidays. I think we should get online with our teachers or parents.

At the same time, if we have lots of free time, we can do some activities after class. We usually have activities from 4:50 to 5:50 in the afternoon. You can play basket ball or football. We also have some interest groups in school, such as drawing, singing and dancing. We can go to the English corner on Monday afternoon. We hope we can spend more time on our subjects or on such

World Sleep Day, on 21st March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world don’t realize it’s very important. As a result, sleep problems are quite comm on.

In 2011, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece did a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Among the people, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, 31.6 percent were diagnosed(诊断) with insomnia(失眠). In addition, 30.7 percent of them have visited doctors for help with sleep problems and 11.6 percent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.

The survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples can’t fall asleep and often wake up in the middle of the night. The main reasons of the problems are pressure(压力) from school or work and a fast pace(节奏) of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also affect sleep and cause poor quality sleep. The survey also found that large numbers of people find it hard to sleep at night. The short term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating(专心). If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase.

There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time

each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.

Getting a good night's sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice

above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

‘USA? Britain? Which country is better to study in?’ We often hear such discussions. As China opens its door, it is a dream for many Chinese students to study abroad. They want to learn about the outside world.

It’s true that studying abroad can help stud ents develop themselves. Their foreign language skills will be improved and it may be easier to find jobs.

But there are problems that should be considered. Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language.

Student s must also learn to live without parents’ care and deal with all kinds of things they haven’t had to do before, like looking after themselves. There are reports about Chinese students abroad running into an ocean of difficulties and giving up finally. When they have to take care of

中考英语英语阅读理解练习题(及答案) 一、英语阅读理解专项练习试卷 1.阅读理解 According to a 2018 study from San Francisco State University, nearly 2. 4 billion people around the world used a smartphone in 2017. By the end of 2019, more than a third of the global population will be using a smartphone. However, smartphone technology can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it sends us unlimited amounts of information. On the other hand, using a smartphone may become an addiction. Erik Peper and Richard Harvey are both health education professors at San Francisco State university. They led the study. Peper explains that smartphone addiction forms connections in the brain that are similar to drug addiction. And these connections form slowly over time. Also, addiction to social media may affect our emotional state. The two professors asked 135 university students about their habit of smartphone use and their feelings. They found that students who used their phones the most reported higher levels of feeling lonely, depressed and anxious. Peper and Harvey do not blame users for their technology addiction. They believe it is the tech industry's desire to make more money that is to blame for the technology addiction. The researchers warm that workers in the technology industry know how to control our brains and turn us into addicts. But the researchers say that we can limit our brains to be less addicted to our phones and computers. Enk Peper suggests timing off our phones before we sleep or do something important. The researchers also suggest taking control of when and where you answer texts or emails. You do not need to answer them all. And you certainly don't need to answer them as soon as you get them. They also suggest putting limits on the time you spend on social media. If you want to catch up with friends on Facebook, set aside a small amount of time to it. You should focus on important tasks and do not allow technology to disturb you. (1)What can we infer from Paragraph 1? A. Smartphone use has become extremely common. B. Most young people can't live without smartphones. C. Smartphones make our life more colorful and convenient. D. Most people consider smartphones as the greatest invention. (2)The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 means smartphone technology____. A. has a brilliant future B. can be better than most people think C. has both advantages and disadvantages D. can give us unlimited amounts of information (3)What did Enk Peper and Richard Harvey find about smartphone use? A. It can help reduce loneliness. B. It's more popular with students.

最新中考英语英语阅读理解试题(及答案) 一、英语阅读理解专项练习试卷 1.阅读理解 That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me. As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets. About a block from my apartment (公寓房间), I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining street-light. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the street. Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired any more, and I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the street anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck (垃圾车) pull up to the street next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other. (1)How did the writer feel when she was walking home after work? A. Cold and sick. B.
