AMy Favorite Building21. Which of the following places is in memory of the emperor’s wife?A. The Taj Mahal.B. The Experience Music Project Museum.C. Westminster Abbey.D. The Seven Wonders of the World.22. If a couple visit Experience Music Project Museum, they should pay_______.A. $0B. $4C. $2D. $623. Whose favorite building can reflect the history of Great Britain?A. Keira’sB. Dylan’sC. Frank’sD. Aaron’sBMy dog died.Yes, she was very old, deaf, and partially blind. She had long lost her youthful energy. Watching her settle into her bed was as painful for me as it was for her. In the past few months, she had b egun to bark at strangers and at neighbors. All this from a dog who didn’t mind if a grandchild pulled her tail.Knowing her decline doesn’t lessen the loss, however. My husband had found her abandoned on his farm and brought her home. She was a black and dirty bag of bones who got nervous when we approached.I like to think that the 13 years she spent with us were filled with love. Every so often, though, my husband would remind me that her days were counted, and we agreed that if she showed any signs of pain, we would put her down. No need for her to suffer, no need for us to cling. I prepared myself for her departure.Yet, when it came on a bright, hot Tuesday afternoon, I wasn’t ready. I was angry about the unfairness of it all.I wanted my two youngest sons, who live out of state, to say their goodbyes. As if we could negotiate with death, with fate. It seems to me that no matter what the circumstances are, we always think we have more time. We fool ourselves to justify ourbehavior. We can’t really liv e every day as if it were our last. It would be exhausting. But we could be able to conduct ourselves in a reasonable manner if we thought everyone we loved wouldn’t be around for another sunrise. We do love our pets, don’t we? They become an integral nece ssary part of the family. So I can’t help but cry.I still look for her in my home office, where she slept. I still expect her to come sit at my feet or to scramble to the front door when one of the children stops by. And I miss my routine of the walks, the feeding and the bathing.I miss her presence and the sense of being shadowed around the house; but more than anything I miss the knowledge that she loved me so unconditionally and without question.24. How was the author’s life with her dog?A. Joyful.B. Upsetting.C. Surprising.D. Troublesome.25. How did the author feel when her dog died?A. She was calm because of the preparations for the day.B. She was heart-broken as if she had lost a family member.C. She was happy that the dog was now free from pain.D. She was at a loss about how to deal with death.26. What does the author think about living every day as the last day?A. It is meaningless and exhausting.B. It makes people justify their behavior.C. It makes people accept death peacefully.D. It helps people value their loved ones.27. The author wrote this article mainly to ______.A. express how much it hurt to lose her dogB. encourage readers to keep a petC. persuade people to accept what happens in lifeD. show what she got from raising a dogCIf you have ever talked about your dreams with your friends, you may have noticed something interesting. Some of your friends rarely remember their dreams, while others can describe their dreams very clearly. Why do people remember dreams differently? The answer is simple: they are two different types of dreamers ——low-recall dreamers and high-recall dreamers.According to researchers at the Lyon Neroscience Research Center in France,high-recall dreamers reported they remembered their dreams almost every day while low-recall dreamers said they only remembered their dreams once or twice a month, reported Live Science.Perrine Ruby, a lead scientist at the research center in Lyon, studied 41 people (21 high-recall dreamers and 20 low-recall dreamers) and recorded their brain activity. She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction (前颞顶叶交界处) was more active in high-recall dreamers. This was true both when they were sleeping and awake. This area of the brain is responsible for collecting and processing information from the outside world. This means that high-recall dreamers are more sensitive to what is happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond more strongly to hearing their own names. When they are sleeping, they tend to be woken up more easily by sounds and movements.By closely studying people’s brain activity, Ruby found that high-recall dreamers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low-recall dreamers do.And it is during these short periods of wakefulness that the brain memorizes dreams. This is not hard to understand. Just try to think of your own sleeping experience. If you are restless (焦躁的) during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams, but if you sleep well and soundly, you tend to remember very little in the morning. This is because “you never get a chance to remember”, Robert Stickgold, a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post.As another research project at the University of Turku in Finland showed, dream content can also affect our memory. Negative dreams are easier to recall than ordinary dreams. Nightmares are often recalled because they are emotionally negative, and such dreams evoke (引起) fear.28. What can we know about high-recall dreamers, according to the article?A. They have very little brain activity when they sleep.B. They can remember their dreams clearly.C. They don’t know how to describe their dreams.D. They remember their dreams twice a week.29. Compared to high-recall dreamers, low-recall dreamers ______.A. have higher quality sleepB. have more sleepless nightsC. are more easily woken at nightD. respond faster when hearing their names30. What is the main purpose of the second to last paragraph?A. To explain Ruby’s fi ndings.B. To attract readers’ interest in future studies.C. To show the advantages of being a low-recall dreamer.D. To suggest what to do to become a low-recall dreamer.31. What did the research project in Finland find?A. Ordinary dreams can help our brain rest.B. Dreams are often affected by our emotions.C. Nightmares often happen when we don’t sleep well.D. Negative dreams are more likely to be recalled.DPreparing to go to Chinese university is exhausting enough. But when studying abroad, you need to worry about things like new tests, essays, recommendations, college choices and visa applications. The first thing you should do after picking the country you want to study in is to make a list of universities, including a dream school (a school you may not get into, but is at the top of your list), a safety school (a school you can definitely get into), and several schools in between. Look at the websites of those universities and you will get a complete list of everything you need for your applications. The most important element in any application will be your standardized test scores, so pick a time as early as possible to take an exam prep course. If you are in a lecture hall with a teacher telling jokes, you are probably just wasting your time. As a reference point, US students who attend top universities spend between 500-1,000 hours studying for the SAT, so probably you should do more. You are also going to need to think about how to tell a story about yourself. Chinese students have a reputation for being very hardworking, but also for sometimes lacking creativity or intellectual curiosity. You need to show the university that you are excellent because of your own personality, not because your parents have forced you to be excellent. Are you int erested in sports? Make sure to play on your school’s team. Universities want to see that you have interests of your own and can show initiative (主动性).Finally, find a consultant to help you through the application process. You will need this help, but be as cautious as you can. Some agents will try their best to help students fulfill their dreams, but there are some irresponsible ones who care more about the fees paid by students.32. What’s the point of the article?A. To introduce some top overseas universities.B. To give advice on how to apply to a foreign university.C. To inform readers about how to prepare for the SAT.D. To tell readers how to choose a good overseas school.33. When preparing to go to a foreign school, you are advised to _____.A. m ake a list of the universities you’re interested inB. take some exam prep coursesC. spend about 500 hours preparing for the SATD. write a good story to prove you are hardworking34. What does the underlined word “cautious” in the last paragraph probably mean?A. earlyB. confidentC. carefulD. prepared.35. What can we conclude from the article?A. It is better to have your parents help you with your applications.B. Foreign universities put a lot of emphasis on their students’ creativity.C. Sports fans have greater opportunities to go to foreign universities.D. Consulting agencies don’t help your application much.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career. I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career. I then found myself a job. Looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next week. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with these children. One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me, I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should attend a course and get a qualification if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and
