1National Open University Management English 3 Coursework AnswersQuestion 1:The advantages of a virtual team lie in its flexibility, diversity, and potential cost savings. Virtual teams allow for greater flexibility in terms of team members' locations and work schedules, enabling organizations to leverage talent from around the world. This diversity can lead to more innovative solutions and a broader range of perspectives. Additionally, virtual teams can often be more cost-effective than traditional teams, as they eliminate the need for office space and related expenses. However, virtual teams also face challenges, such as communication barriers, lack of trust, and difficulty in fostering team cohesion. Communication in virtual teams may be hindered by factors such as time zone differences, language barriers, and technological issues. This can lead tomisunderstandings and decreased productivity. Trust is also harder to establish in virtual teams, as team members may have limited opportunities for face-to-face interaction. Without trust, collaboration and effective teamwork become more challenging. To overcome these challenges, organizations must prioritize clear communication, trust-building activities, and team-building efforts. Providing virtual team members with the necessary tools and technologies for communication and collaboration is essential. Regular video conferences, virtual team-building exercises, and establishing clear goals and expectations can help foster trust and cohesion within virtual teams.Question 2:Cultural intelligence (CQ) refers to an individual's ability to function effectively in culturally diverse settings and interact with people from different cultural backgrounds. Cultural intelligence is essential in today's globalized world, where businesses often operate across borders and cultures. Individuals with high CQ are able to navigate cultural differences, understand and respect diverse perspectives, and adapt their communication and behavior to suit different cultural contexts. There are four key components of cultural intelligence: mindfulness, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral.Mindfulness involves being aware of one's own cultural biases and assumptions and being open to learning about other cultures. Cognitive refers to a person's knowledge and understanding of different cultural norms, values, and practices. Motivational relates to an individual's interest and willingness to engage with other cultures and learn from them. Behavioral involves the ability to adapt one's behavior and communication style to be more effective in cross-cultural interactions. To enhance cultural intelligence, individuals can engage in cross-cultural experiences, such as studying or working abroad, attending cultural events, and seeking out opportunities to interact with people from different backgrounds. It is also important to be curious, empathetic, and open-minded when engaging with people from diverse cultures. Building relationships and establishing trust with colleagues from different cultural backgrounds can also help develop cultural intelligence and facilitate effective communication and collaboration.篇22024 National Open University Management English 3Q1: Writing1. Environmental pollution has become a serious problem worldwide. Discuss the causes and effects of this problem and suggest some possible solutions.Answer:Environmental pollution has been a growing concern globally, with detrimental effects on human health and the ecosystem. There are various factors contributing to this issue, including industrial activities, transportation emissions, agricultural practices, and waste disposal. These activities release pollutants such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and other toxic chemicals into the atmosphere, water bodies, and soil. The effects of environmental pollution are widespread and significant. Air pollution, caused by emissions from vehicles, factories, and power plants, can lead to respiratory diseases, asthma, and other health problems. Water pollution, resulting from the discharge of chemicals and sewage into rivers and oceans, can harm aquatic life and contaminate drinking water sources. Soil pollution, caused by the use of pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture, can degrade soil quality and affect crop yields. To address this pressing issue, several solutions can be implemented. Firstly, governments should enforce strict regulations on industries to reduce emissions and implement clean technologies. This can include setting emission standards, investing in renewable energy sources, and promoting sustainable practices. Secondly, individuals can contribute by reducing their carbon footprint through actions such as using public transportation, conserving energy, and recycling waste. Furthermore, education and awareness campaigns can help raise public consciousness about the importance of preserving the environment. In conclusion, environmental pollution is a critical challenge that requires immediate action. By addressing the causes of pollution, understanding its effects, and implementing effective solutions, we can work towards a cleaner and healthier planet for future generations.Q2: Reading2. According to a recent study, nearly half of all jobs in the United States are at risk of being automated within the next two decades, withlower-skilled workers being particularly vulnerable.Q2(a): What are the advantages and disadvantages of automation and artificial intelligence in the job market?Answer:The advantages of automation and artificial intelligence in the job market include increased productivity, efficiency, and cost savings for businesses. These technologies can perform repetitive tasks at a faster pace and with greater accuracy than human workers, leading to higher output and improved quality of products and services. Additionally, automation can help reduce human error and safety risks in hazardous environments. However, the disadvantages of automation and artificial intelligence include job displacement, income inequality, and social disruption. As machines take over tasks previously performed by humans, many workers are at risk of losing their jobs or facing reduced wages. This can lead to economic hardship, unemployment, and a widening wealth gap betweenhigh-skilled and low-skilled workers. Moreover, the rapid pace of technological change can result in social tensions, resistance to innovation, and challenges in retraining the workforce.Q2(b): How can individuals and organizations adapt to the changing job market influenced by technology?Answer:Individuals and organizations can adapt to the changing job market influenced by technology by investing in education, training, and skills development. Lifelong learning and continuous upskilling are essential for staying competitive in a digital economy. Individuals can acquire new skills in fields such as data analysis, programming, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity to enhance their employability and job prospects. Organizations can also provide training programs, mentorship opportunities, and career advancement paths to help employees transition to new roles and responsibilities.Furthermore, collaboration between government, industry, and academia is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by automation and artificial intelligence. Policymakers can enact laws and regulations to protect workers' rights, promote job creation in emerging industries, and support displaced workers through social safety nets and retraining programs. Industryleaders can invest in research and development, innovation, and workforce planning to anticipate future skills requirements and technological trends. Academic institutions can offer tailored curriculum, certifications, and apprenticeships to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. In conclusion, the impact of technology on the job market is significant and complex, requiring a multi-faceted approach to adaptation and resilience. By understanding the advantages and disadvantages of automation and artificial intelligence, and by taking proactive steps to upskill, reskill, and innovate, individuals and organizations can navigate the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing digital landscape.Overall, the key to success in the evolving job market lies in embracing new technologies, acquiring relevant skills, and fostering a culture of innovation and lifelong learning. By staying agile, adaptable, and forward-thinking, we can harness the potential of automation and artificial intelligence to create a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.篇3National Open University Management English 3 Examination Answer Sheet2024Part I Listening Comprehension Section A1. APart V WritingSection ADear Sir/Madam,I am writing to express my concerns about the recent changes in the company's policies. As a long-time employee, I have witnessed first-hand the impact of these changes on morale and productivity. I believe that it is important for the management to consider the opinions and feedback of the employees before implementing such drastic measures. One of the major issues that I have noticed is the lack of communication between the management and the employees. Many of us feel left in the dark about the reasons behind the changes and how they will affect us in the long run. This has led to a feeling of distrust and uncertainty among the staff.Additionally, the sudden increase in workload and expectations has put a strain on our mental and physical health. It is important for the management to understand thatemployees are the backbone of the company and theirwell-being should be a top priority.I would like to suggest that the management consider holding regular meetings with the employees to address any concerns and provide updates on the changes. It is important for us to feel involved in the decision-making process and to have a voice in how the company is run.I hope that my concerns will be taken into consideration and that the company can work towards creating a more positive and supportive work environment.Yours sincerely,[Your Name]Section BThe Importance of Time ManagementTime management is a crucial skill that everyone should possess in order to achieve success in both their personal and professional lives. They are relentlessly 5)__ optimistic __ and persistent; they have both intellectual skills and the ability to work well with other people; and they love their work. In fact, 6)_ for _ these people, work is more like an obsession than a job. Of course, many of the questions about greatness 7)__ remain __, unanswered. What roles so genetics and environment 8)__ play __in the question ? How can we know who among our 9)contemporaries will be remembered as great and which people, though famous today, will be 10)__ forgotten __ in the future? It’s also possible that our 11)_ view _ of who is great is not always fair or accurate. For example, the of 12)_ achievement__ women are not recognized as often as they should be.Finally, we can’t even be 13)__ sure__ if it is really good to be great. Maybe the happiest people are the normal ones. Normal people aren’t endowed 14)_ with _ what it takes to be great, bu t they also don’t have to worry 15)_ about _ the burdens of history.Unit 2Gratitude is defined as the art of showing 1)__ appreciation __ for every kindness, great and small. Usually, 2)__expressing _ gratitude costs very little, but its rewards can be great. When gratitude is owed but not given, however, as when we 3)_ fail _ to recognize a generous act on someone else’s 4)_ part _, this denial can lead to sore feelings, and even resentment. Sometimes, truly deep gratitude calls for personal sacrifice. One 5)_ example __ is a mother of world war II soldier who traveled from her home 6)_ through __ the U. S. to visit the French family who had 7)___ sheltered ___ her son from Nazis. She was driven to 8)__ do this unselfish generosity which this family had shown her son. In sum, the 12)_ key _ to gratitude is thoughtfulness, or 13)_ taking __ pains to consider the feeling of others as well as out own. Being generous and 14)_ unselfish _ with our affection and sentiments is one thing we all can do to make the world a more pleasant place. For all of these 15)_ reasons _ gratitude is something of which none of us can give too much..Unit 3Traditional western ways of thinking can often lead to an 1)_ impasse _ when we are confronting a truly difficult problem. This happened to Dr. Edward Jenner when he was trying to 2)_ come _ up with a vaccine for the deadly disease known as smallpox. Jenner was 3)_ able _ to solve the problem he faced by changing the 4)_framework within which he looked at it. Rather than focusing on people who had smallpox, he 5) looked carefully at those who seemed never to get the disease. This change in 6)_tactics _ is an example of what is known as “lateral thinking.” The term means choosing not to approach a problem head-on, but instead looking at it 7)__ sideways _. In lateral thinking, being able to take in and 8)_consider _ all kinds of ideas, no matter how unlikely they might seem, is of the9)_ utmost _ significance. Lateral thinking can help all kinds of people, from smokers who want to give10)__ up _ their habit, to archers who need to relax in order to perform 11)_ at _ their best. This idea does not 12)_imply that solutions which come from vertical thinking are always deeply 13) flawed _ . The truth is that different ways of thinking have different 14)_ advantages when you get stuck struggling with a problem head-on, thinking laterally can help you to shift your point of view and perhaps see a 15)_ solution you wouldn’t other wise notice.Unit 4A recent educational experiment s howed that the difference between “gifted” children and regular ones may have as much as to do with 1)__expectations__ as with intelligence. An elementary school teacher was 2)_deceived__ into thinking that her students were above average in intelligence. She then 3)__managed__ to get them to do outstanding work, even though their true IQs were well within the normal range. It seems that her belief in her students’ intelligence was enough to turn them 4)_into_ better learners. It’s difficult to 5)__pinpoint __exactly how such beliefs are expressed. It 6)__may __have to do with how a teacher talks to the class: many positive, supportive expressions and few expressions of impatience, annoyance, or 7)__irritation__.Non-verbal communication, including 8)_facial __expressions, probably plays a role too. But because I wanted to 2)__ emulate__ some of the more well-read inmates, I decided to do something about it, I began by copying 3)__over _ the dictionary. You know the dictionary had all kinds of information. It’s something like an encyclopedia in 4)_miniature _. But the most important result 5)_of _ studying dictionary was that it gave me the word 6)_ base __ I needed to read 7)_ effectively __. Soon, I could pick up8)_ almost _ any book and read it. Many people say that no true 13)__ rehabilitation _ is possible in prison. But I felt that I learned more there than I could have in any college, even if no degree was 14)__conferred __ on me. After all, where else could I have 15)_ combated _ my own ignorance more effectively than in a place where I could be left alone and allowed to read for up to 15 hours per day?Unit 6what does a young child’s ability not to eat a marshmallow 1) _ have _ to do with success in life? Quite a lot, as it turns out. The 4-year-old who is able to 2)__ hold out __ in order to receive a second treat is 3)_ demonstrating _ more self-control than will serve him or her well as an adult. This ability to control one’s 4)__impulses __ is just one part of what is called Emotional Intelligence. The children who demonstrate it will grow up to be better adjusted and 5)_ more _successful. She and I are both somewhat 2)_ shy _ introverted people who like to read. My father is a man of action 3)_rather _ than words. While my mother and I tend to worry a lot, my father is an 4)_ optimist _ who’s never had a sleepless night in his life. When I was young, my father and I fought 5)_ constantly _. For each question there are four answers. Read the passages carefully and choose the best answer to each of the questions. Put your choice in the ANSWER SHEET. (20 points)Text 1A scientist once said: “I have concluded that the earth is being visited by intelligently controlled vehicles fro m outer space.”If we take this as a reasonable explanation for UFOs (unidentified flying objects), questions immediately come up.“Why don’t they get in touch with us, then? Why don’t they land right on the White House lawn and declare themselves?” people asked. In reply, scientists say that, while this may be what we want, it may not necessarily be what they want.“The most likely explanation, it seems to me,” said Dr. Mead, “is that they are simply watching what we are up to -- that responsible society outside our solar system is keeping an eye on us to see that we don’t set in motion a chain reaction that might have unexpected effects for outside our solar system.”Opinions from other scientists might go like this: “Why should they want to get in touch w ith us? We may feel we’re more important than we really are! They may want to observe us only and not interfere with the development of our civilization. They may not care if we see them but they also may not care to say ‘hello’.”Some scientists have also suggested that Earth is a kind of zoo or wildlife reserve. Just as we set aside wilderness areas and wildlife reserves to allow animals and growing things to develop naturally while we observe them, so perhaps Earth was set aside ages ago for the same purpose. Are we being observed by intelligent beings from other civilizations in the universe? Are they watching our progress in space travel? Do we live in a gigantic “zoo” observed by our “keepers,” but having no communication with them?Never before in our history have we had to confront ideas like these. The simple fact is that we, who have always regarded ourselves as supreme in the universe, may not be so. Now we have to recognize that, among the stars in the heavens, there may very well be worlds inhabited by beings who are to us as we are to ants. 16. People who ask the question “Why don’t they get in touch with us... and declarethemselves?” think that ________.[A] there are no such things as UFOs[B] UFOs are visitors from solar system4大家版词典级31年考研英语真题及答案[C] there’s no reason for UFOs sooner or later[D] we are bound to see UFOs sooner or later17. According to Dr. Mead, the attitude of beings from outer space toward us isone of ________.[A] unfriendliness[B] suspicion[C] superiority[D] hostility18. The tone of the writer is that of ________.[A] doubt[B] warning[C] indifference[D] criticismText 2The use of the motor is becoming more and more widespread in the twentieth century; as an increasing number of countries develop both technically and economi cally, so a larger proportion of the world’s population is able to buy and use a car. Possessing a car gives a much greater degree of mobility, enabling the driver to move around freely. The owner of a car is no longer forced to rely on public transport and is, therefore, not compelled to work locally. He can choose from different jobs and probably changes his work more frequently as he is not restricted to a choice within a small radius. Travelling to work by car is also more comfortable than having to use public transport; the driver can adjust the heating in winter and the air conditioning in the summer to suit his own needs and preference. There is no irritation caused by waiting for trains, buses or underground trains, standing in long patient queues, or sitting on windy platforms, for as long as half an hour sometimes. With the building of good, fast motorways long distances can be covered rapidly and pleasantly. For the first time in this century also, many people are now able to enjoy their leisure time to the full by making trips to the country or seaside at the weekends, instead of being confined to their immediate neighbourhood. This feeling of independence, and the freedom to go where you please, is perhaps the greatest advantage of the car. When considering the drawbacks, perhaps pollution is of prime importance. As more and more cars are produced and used, so the emission from their exhaust-pipes contains an ever larger volume of poisonous gas. Some of the contents of this gas, such as lead, not only pollute the atmosphere but cause actual harm to the health of people. Many of the minor illnesses of modern industrial society, headaches, tiredness, and stomach upsets are thought to arise from breathing polluted air; doctors’ surgeries are full of pe ople suffering from illnesses caused by pollution. It is also becoming increasingly difficult to deal with the problem of traffic in towns; most of the important cities of the world suffer from traffic congestion. In fact any advantage gained in comfort is often cancelled out in city driving by the frustration caused by traffic jams: endless queues of cars crawling one after another through all the main streets. As an increasing number of traffic regulation1989年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题5schemes are devised, the poor bewildered driver finds himself diverted and forced into one-way systems which cause even greater delays than the traffic jams they are supposed to prevent. The mounting cost of petrol and the increased license fees and road tax all add to the driver’s worries. In fact, he mu st sometimes wonder if the motor car is such a blessing and not just a menace.19. More and more people can afford to buy and use cars because ________.[A] an increasing number of cars are being produced[B] the cost of cars is getting cheaper with the development of technology[C] lots of countries have become more developed[D] the use of cars has proved to be more economical20. The advantages of having a car are best experienced in the driver’s ________.[A] freedom in choosing his job[B] comfort during the travels[C] enjoyment of his leisure time[D] feeling of self-reliance21. What is considered by the writer as the greatest menace to the people causedby the widespread use of motor cars?[A] air pollution[B] traffic jams[C] fatal diseases[D] high costText 3Manners nowadays in metropolitan cities like London are practically non-existent. It is nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to elbow an elderly woman aside in the dash for the last remaining seat on the tube or bus, much less stand up and offer his seat to her, as he ought. In fact, it is saddening to note that if a man does offer his seat to an older woman, it is nearly always a Continental man or one from the older generation. This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued about by young men, who say that, since women have claimed equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with courtesy and that those who go out to work should take their turn in the rat race like anyone else. Women have never claimed to be physically as strong as men. Even if it is not agreed, however, that young men should stand up for younger women, the fact remains that courtesy should be shown to the old, the sick and the burdened. Are we really so lost to all ideals of unselfishness that we can sit there indifferently reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves “First come, first served,” while a grey-haired woman, a mother with a young child or a cripple stands? Yet this is all too often seen.Conditions in travel are really very hard on everyone, we know, but hardship is surely no excuse. Sometimes one wonders what would have been the behaviour of these stout young men in a packed refugee train or a train on its way to a prison-camp during the War. Would they have considered it only right and their proper due to keep the best places for themselves then?Older people, tir ed and irritable from a day’s work, are not angels, either6大家版词典级31年考研英语真题及答案-- far from it. Many a brisk argument or an insulting quarrel breaks out as the weary queues push and shove each other to get on buses and tubes. One cannot commend this, of course, but one does feel there is just a little more excuse. If cities are to remain pleasant places to live in at all, however, it seems imperative, not only that communications in transport should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and polite. All over cities, it seems that people are too tired and too rushed to be polite. Shop assistants won’t bother to assist, taxi drivers growl at each o ther as they dash dangerously round corners, bus conductor pull the bell before their desperate passengers have had time to get on or off the bus, and so on and so on. It seems to us that it is up to the young and strong to do their small part to stop such deterioration.22. From what you have read, would you expect manners to improve among people________?[A] who are physically weak or crippled[B] who once lived in a prison-camp during the War[C] who live in big modern cities[D] who live only in metropolitan cities23. What is the writer’s opinion concerning courteous manners towards women?[A] Now that women have claimed equality, they no longer need to be treateddifferently from men.[B] It is generally considered old-fashioned for young men to give up theirseats to young women.[C] “Lady First” should be universally practiced.[D] Special consideration ought to be shown them.24. According to the author communication between human beings would be smootherif ________.[A] people were more considerate towards each other[B] people were not so tired and irritable[C] women were treated with more courtesy[D] public transport could be improved25. What is the possible meaning of the word “deterioration” in the lastparagraph?[A] worsening of general situation[B] lowering of moral standards[C] declining of physical constitution[D] spreading of evil conductSection III Cloze TestFor each numbered blank in the following passage there are four choices labeled [A], [B], [C] and [D]. Choose the best one and put your choice in the ANSWER SHEET. Read the whole passage before making your choice. (10 points)One day drought may be a thing of the past at least in coastal cities. Vast areas of desert throughout the world may for the first time _____ and provide millions of hectares of land where now nothing grows.1989年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题7By the end of this century this may not be mere _________. Scientists are already looking into the possibility of using some of the available ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. In these regions there are vast ice-caps formed by snow that has fallen over the past 50,000 years. Layer ____ layer of deep snow means that, when melted, the snow water would be pure, not salty as sea-ice would be. There is so much ________ pure water here that it would need only a fraction of it to turn much of the desert or poorly irrigated parts of the world into rich farmland. And what useful packages it would come in! It should be possible to cut off a bit of ice and transport it! Alternatively perhaps a passing iceberg could be ________. They are always breaking away from the main caps and floating around, pushed by currents, until they eventually melt and are wasted. Many icebergs are, of course, far too small to be towed ________ distance, and would melt before they reached a country that needed them anywhere. It would be necessary to locate one that was _______ and that was big enough to provide a good supply of ice when it reached us. Engineers think that an iceberg up to seven miles long and one and a half miles wide could be transported if the tug pulling it was as big as a supertanker! Even then they would cover only twenty miles every day. However, ________ the iceberg was at its destination, more that 7,000 million cubic metres of water could be taken from it! That would probably be more than enough for any medium-sized city even in the hottest summer! But no doubt a use could be found for it. ________, scientist say, there would not be too much wastage in such a journey. The larger the iceberg, the slower it melts, even if it is towed through the tropics. This is because when the sun has a bigger area to warm __________, less heat actually gets into the iceberg. The vast frozen centre would be unaffected.26. [A] come to life[B] come into existence[C] come into activity[D] come round27. [A] speculation[B] imagination[C] computation[D] expectation28.
