A It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him. And he seemed to want to stay that way too. But a year ago when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit, I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible. I was facing serious problems, and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine. In desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key, so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it. Two weeks later, it showed up in my inbox: a muchthought, threepage letter. Dad, a 68yearold retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists andturns”. I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened it up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late.I cried because at first, in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit “Send”. We’ve since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough stuff more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes, but I’m glad I found a way to talk to mine. 21. The author’s dad can be best described as ________. But what about Tom, the motorbike shop owner, Joe Knight and Karen Berman? Tom, Joe and Karen are all characters in a comic book. But Mr. Knight and Ms. Berman are real people. In 2006, they wrote a book called Financial Intelligence ―― a manager’s guide to knowing what the numbers really mean. It was written for people who need to learn quickly about finance (财政). The book explains, in simple ways, oftencomplex methods of keeping financial information. It became a bestseller. Recently a comic book, which provides the same information asFinancial Intelligence in easytounderstand picture form, is published by Smarter Comics. This book consists of a textbook and a graphic(插画的) novel. It tells the story of Tom, a repairman who must quickly learn how to direct the motorbike repair shop his father founded. Tom has no experience with finance, and is struggling with the business. Joe Knight and Karen Berman help him. Artist Dave Wachter drew pictures for the comic book. Franco Arda, the founder and head of Smarter Comics, formerly worked as an investment banker. He started the company almost three years ago with his own money. He wanted to create educational comics that increase understandi ng. “I think almost everybody understands the phrase ‘a picture says a thousand words’, so, I mean, probably 90 percent of us grew up with comics and they understand that comics help us to learn a concept much quicker than text alone,” he said. “Within an hour, you can get the idea of finance with this book very quickly and not in a boring way. Once you get these pictures, you get the basic knowledge of finance.” “The new comic book is available in paperback(平装本). There will also be versions for iPad and iP hone users,” he added. 25. Or it was considered an unhealthy escape from real life and its duties. Daydreaming has always had a bad reputation, but now scientific research has showed that daydreaming may actually improve your mental health and creativity. It can even help you achieve your desired goals. Now some people are taking a fresh look at daydreaming. Some think it may be a very healthy thing to do. Researchers are finding daydreaming, they tell us, is a good means of relaxation. But its benefits go beyond this. A number of psychologists have conducted experiments and have reached some surprising conclusions. Dr. Joan T. Freyberg has concluded that daydreaming contributes to intellectual growth. It also improves concentration, attention span, and the ability to get along with others, she says. In an experiment with school children, the same researcher found that daydreaming led the children to pay more attention to details. They had more happy feelings. They worked together better. Another researcher reported that daydreaming seemed to produce improved selfcontrol and creative abilities. But that’s only part of the story. The most remarkable thing about daydreaming may be its usefulness in shaping our future lives as we want them to be. Industrialist Henry J. Kaiser believed that much of his success was due to the positive use of daydreaming. He maintained that “you can imagine your future”. Florence Nightingale dreamed of becoming a nurse. The young ThomasEdison pictured himself as an inventor. For these famous achievers, it appears that their daydreams came true. Of course daydreaming is no substitute(代替者) for hard work. You have to work hard to develop skills. Daydreaming alone can’t turn you in to your heart’s desire. But in combination with the more usual methods of selfdevelopment, it might make a critical difference. And who knows: You might see your own daydreams come true. 29. From the scientific research, a few minutes’ daydreaming will ________. A. relieve stress effectively B. improve grades C. escape from real life and duties D. gain a positive attitudes towards exams 30. According to Dr. Joan T. Freyberg, daydreaming can ________. A. reduce failure in examinations B. help rapid and continuous physical growth C. improve selfcontrol and creative abilities D. benefit improvement of concentration 31. What does “the story” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. The attention. B. The conclusion.C. The contribution.D. The concentration. 32. Nightingale and Edison are examples to explain that daydreaming probably________. A. earns a good reputation B. takes the place of hard work C. pictures future profession D. turns the desire into reality D The global figures reveal that even the Americans put Britain to shame when it comes to taking exercise. Britain has one of the most sedentary populations on the earth, with almost twice the proportion of people defined as “inactive” as in neighboring France. In the UK, 63.3 percent of the population fails to meet recommended levels of physical activity, increasing their risk of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. By contrast, 40.5 percent of US citizens are inactive, despite more than 30 percent of them being obese. Now, there’s good news. Smart foods that tell the brain you have eaten enough could hold the key to beating obesity, researchers have claimed. They hope the foods will contain a special chemical which mimics (模仿) the message our gut (肠道) sends to the brain when it is full. By sending the message earlier, the brain can be fooled into not overeating. “We know nutrients interact with gut cells, which send chemical messengers――hormones ―― to the brain to signal ‘stomach full’,” Dr. Jens Holst said. This message from our food to gut to brain is now being used to fight obesity. Holst discovered GLP1, which acts on parts of the brain that regulate appetite. “There is a raft of hormones, which will tend to help end a meal,” said Dr. Holst. “We don’t know much about which nutrients are involved and whether we can handle how food interacts with those signaling systems and how those systems are integrated(整合) at different levels in the brain.” The team hopes their research could lead to drugs which mimic the message, and hopes to eventually make food that can also contain the messages. “It would be even better if we could come up with smart foods,” said Holst. 33. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “sedentary” in Paragraph 1? A. Proud. B. Inactive. C. Silent. D. Energetic.34. What message could smart foods probably tell the brain? A. Which food tastes good. B. When to stop eating. C. How to get enough nutrition. D. How to live a healthy life. 35. What can we learn from the passage? A. Smart foods still have a long way to go. B. Dr. Holst doesn’t think highly of smart foods. C. There will be more and more overweight people. D. It’s fashionable to stay slim at present. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

You will most probably find this passage ______.A. on a webpageB. in a magazineC. in a text bookD. in a guidebookBEvery human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. Scientists and experts have proved the uniqueness of finger-prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case. The ridge (脊状) structure on a person's fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by new one which bears a reproduction of the original pattern. It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed. Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take.Finger-prints can be made very easily with printer's ink. They can be recorded easily. With special methods, identification (识别)can be achieved successfully within a short time. Because of the simplicity and low cost of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain. His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident. When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye. Special techniques are used to “print” them. Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible ifa print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained.4. If a person is hungry , or tired or cold , his dreams may include a feeling of this kind.If the covers on your body, such as a quiltor a blanket have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping on the ice and snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experience you have today. So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has an effect on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and the interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, home-sick soldiers of their families and prisoners of freedom. To show you how this is happening while you are asleep and how your needs and wishes can all be joined together in a dream , here is the story of the experiment.A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbed cotton. He would dream he was in hospital and his charming girlfriend was visiting him , sitting on the bed and feeling gently his hands! There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanations of dreams , though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that do not come true.In other words, dreams are a way of having your wishes carried out.8. AIt’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him. And he seemed to want to stay that way too.But a year ago when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit, I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible. I was facing serious problems, and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine. In desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key, so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it.Two weeks later, it showed up in my inbox: a muchthought, threepage letter. Dad, a 68yearold retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he madein career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists and turns”.I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened it up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late. I cried because at first, in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit “Send”.We’ve since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough stuff more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes, but I’m glad I found a way to talk to mine.21. The author ’s dad can be best described as ________. But what about Tom, the motorbike shop owner, Joe Knight and Karen Berman?Tom, Joe and Karen are all characters in a comic book. But Mr. Knight and Ms. Berman are real people. In 2006, they wrote a book called Financial Intelligence ——a manager’s guide to knowing what the numbers really mean. It was written for people who need to learn quickly about finance (财政). The book explains, in simple ways, oftencomplex methods of keeping financial information. It became a bestseller.Recently a comic book, which provides the same information as Financial Intelligence in easytounderstand picture form, is published by Smarter Comics. Artist Dave Wachter drew pictures for the comic book.Franco Arda, the founder and head of Smarter Comics, formerly worked as an investment banker. He started the company almost three years ago with his own money. He wanted to create educational comics that increase underst anding. Once you get these pictures, you get the basic knowledge of finance.”“The new comic book is available in paperback(平装本). There will also be versions for iPad and iPhone users,” he added.25. A number of psychologists have conducted experiments and have reached some surprising conclusions.Dr. But that’s o nly part of the story. The most remarkable thing about daydreaming may be its usefulness in shaping our future lives as we want them to be. Industrialist Henry J. Kaiser believed that much of his success was due to the positive use of daydreaming. He maint ained that “you can imagine your future”. Florence Nightingale dreamed of becoming a nurse. The young Thomas Edison pictured himself as an inventor. For these famous achievers, it appears that their daydreams came true.2做题破万卷,下笔如有神天才出于勤奋Of course daydreaming is no substitute(代替者) for hard work. You have to work hard to develop skills. Daydreaming alone can’t turn you into your heart’s desire. But in combination with the more usual methods of selfdevelopment, it might make a critical difference. And who knows: You might see your own daydreams come true.29. From the scientific research, a few minutes’ daydreaming will ________. A. relieve stress effectively B. improve gradesC. escape from real life and dutiesD. gain a positive attitudes towards exams30. According to Dr. Joan T. Freyberg, daydreaming can ________. A. reduce failure in examinationsB. help rapid and continuous physical growthC. improve selfcontrol and creative abilitiesD. benefit improvement of concentration31. What does “the story” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. The attention. B. The conclusion. C. The contribution.D. The concentration.32. Nightingale and Edison are examples to explain that daydreaming probably ________. A. earns a good reputation B. takes the place of hard work C. pictures future profession D. turns the desire into realityDThe global figures reveal that even the Americans put Britain to shame when it comes to taking exercise. Britain has one of the most sedentary populations on the earth, with almost twice the proportion of people defined as “inactive ” as in neighboring France. In the UK, 63.3 percent of the population fails to meet recommended levels of physical activity, increasing their risk of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. By contrast, 40.5 percent of US citizens are inactive, despite more than 30 percent of them being obese. Now, there ’s good news. “We know nutrients interact with gut cells, which send chemical messengers ——hormones —— to the brain to signal ‘stomach full ’,” Dr. Jens Holst said. This message from our food to gut to brain is now being used to fight obesity. Holst discovered GLP 1, which acts on parts of the brain that regulate appetite. “There is a raft of hormones, which will tend to help end a meal,” said Dr. Holst. “We don ’t know much about which nutrients are involved and whether we can handle how food interacts with those signaling systems and how those systems are integrated(整合) at different levels in the brain.”The team hopes their research could lead to drugs which mimic the message, and hopes to eventually make food that can also contain the messages. “It would be even better if we could come up with smart foods,” said Holst.33. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “sedentary” in Paragraph 1?A. Proud.B. Inactive.C. Silent.D. Energetic.34. What message could smart foods probably tell the brain? A. Which food tastes good. B. When to stop eating. C. How to get enough nutrition. D. How to live a healthy life.35. What can we learn from the passage? A. Smart foods still have a long way to go. B. Dr. Holst doesn’t think highly of smart foods. C. There will be more and more overweight people. D. It’s fashionable to stay slim at present. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained.24. If a person is hungry , or tired or cold , his dreams may include a feeling of this kind.If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping on the ice and snow. To show you how this is happening while you are asleep and how your needs and wishes can all be joined together in a dream , here is the story of the experiment.Aman was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbed cotton. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that do not come true.In other words, dreams are a way of having your wishes carried out.28. AAn earthquake is a trembling or shaking of the ground caused by the sudden release(释放) of energy stored in the rocks below the surface. Generally, earthquakes last only seconds. Strong ground shaking during a medium(中等的) to large earthquake generally lasts about 10 to 30 secon ds. Aftershocks(余震)can occur once in a while for weeks or even months. Many people think that there is an “earthq uake season” or a ki nd of “earthquake weather”. As a matter of fact, there isn’t. Ea rthquakes can occur at any time of the year and at time of day or night. Earthquakes occur under all weather conditions-sunny, wet. or cold without any special weather tendency(倾向).Also, you don’t need to worry that the ground will open up and swallow people when earthquakes occur. Open ground crack s may form during an earthquake, for example, to land sliding or ground falling. However, such cracks tend to be open gaps (they don’t“swallow”) that a person could stand in afterwards .The safest place in an earthquake is an open field because b uildings and falling objects can injure or kill you. If you are ind oors, when you feel the ground start to shake, take cover immediately under a table or strong piece of furniture, placing som ething between falling objects and yourself. Don’t attempt to u se the stairs or an elevator to get out of the building. 21.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage ?A.Earthquakes usually last 10 to 30 seconds.B.After a big earthquake, there are many more quakes. AIt‟s hard to talk to Dad sometimes. In desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key, so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it.Two weeks later, it showed up in my inbox: a much-thought, three-page letter. Dad, a 68-year-old retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists andturns”.I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened it up earlier but was grateful it wasn‟t too late. I cried because at first, in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simp le: I just had to hit “Send”.We‟ve since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven‟t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough stuff more manageable and life s weeter. In 2006, they wrote a book called Financial Intelligence ——a manager‟s guide to knowing what the numbers really mean. It was written for people who need to learn quickly about finance (财政). The book explains, in simple ways, often-complex methods of keeping financial information. It became a best-seller.Recently a comic book, which provides the same information as Financial Intelligence in easy-to-understand picture form, is published by Smarter Comics. A number of psychologists have conducted experiments and have reached some surprising conclusions.Dr. Another researcher reported that daydreaming seemed to produce improved self-control and creative abilities. But that‟s only part of the story. The young Thomas Edison pictured himself as an inventor. For these famous achievers, it appears that their daydreams came true.Of course daydreaming is no substitute(代替者) for hard work. You have to work hard to develop skills. Daydreaming alon e can‟t turn you into your heart‟s desire. But in combination with the more usual methods of self-development, it might make a critical difference. And who knows: You might see your own daydreams come true.29. What does “the story” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. The attention.B. The conclusion.C. The contribution.D. The concentration.32. Nightingale and Edison are examples to explain that daydreaming probably ________.A. earns a good reputationB. takes the place of hard workC. pictures future professionD. turns the desire into realityDThe global figures reveal that even the Americans put Britain to shame when it comes to taking exercise. Britain has one of the most sedentary populations on the earth, with almost twice the proportion of people defined as “inactive” as in neighboring France. In the UK, 63.3 percent of th e population fails to meet recommended levels of physical activity, increasing their risk of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. By contrast, 40.5 percent of US citizens are inactive, despite more than 30 percent of them being obese. Now, there‟s good news. “We know nutrients interact with gut cells, which send chemical messengers——hormones —— to the brain to signal …stomach full‟,” Dr. Jens Holst said. This message from our food to gut to brain is now being used to fight obesity. Holst discovered GLP1, which acts on parts of the brain that regulate appetite. “There is a raft of hormones, which will tend to help end a meal,” said Dr. Holst. “We don‟t know much about which nutrients are involved and whether we can handle how food interacts with those signaling systems and how those systems are integrated(整合) atThe team hopes their research could lead to drugs which mimic the message, and hopes to eventually make food that can also contain the messages. “It would be even better if we could come up with smart foods,” said Holst.33. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “sedentary” in Paragraph 1?A. Proud.B. Inactive.C. Silent.D. Energetic.34. What message could smart foods probably tell the brain?A. Which food tastes good.B. When to stop eating.C. How to get enough nutrition.D. How to live a healthy life.35. What can we learn from the passage?A. Smart foods still have a long way to go.B. Dr. Holst doesn‟t think highly of smart foods.C. There will be more and more over-weight people.D. It‟s fashionable to stay slim at present.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Generally, earthquakes last only seconds. Strong ground shaking during a medium(中等的) to large earthquake generally lasts about 10 to 30 seconds. Aftershocks(余震)can occur once in a while for weeks or even months. Many people think that there is an “earthquake season” or a kind of “earthquake weather”. As a matter of fact, there isn’t. Earthquakes can occur at any time of the year and at time of day or night. Earthquakes occur under all weather conditions-sunny, wet. or cold without any special weather tendency(倾向). Also, you don’t need to worry that the ground will open up and swallow people when earthquakes occur. Open ground cracks may form during an earthquake, for example, to
land sliding or ground falling. However, such cracks tend to be open gaps (they don’t “ swallow”) that a person could stand in afterwards. The safest place in an earthquake is an open field because buildings and falling objects can injure or kill you. If you are indoors, when you feel the ground start to shake, take cover immediately under a table or strong piece of furniture, placing something between falling objects and yourself. Don’t attempt to use the stairs or an elevator to get out of the building. 21.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.Earthquakes usually last 10 to 30 seconds. B.After a big earthquake, there are many more quakes. C.Cracks in an earthquake are very dangerous. D.What usually injures people during an earthquake are falling buildings. 22.The reason why there isn’t “earthquake weather” is that ____________. A.an earthquake only lasts seconds and doesn’t happen frequently. B.an earthquake can happen at any time and in any kind of weather. C.when an earthquake happens is related to the weather D.earthquakes don’t change with the seasons 23.The underlined word “swallow” in Paragraph3 probably means “___________”? A.take sb. / sth. in B.make sb. frightened C.make room for sb. to stand in D.make the ground slide B Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England. His parents’ house was in north London, but during the Second World War Oxford was considered a safer place to have babies. When he was eight, his family moved to St Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At eleven Stephen went to St Albans School, and then on to University College, Oxford, his father’s old college. Stephen wanted to do Mathematics, although his father would have preferred medicine. Mathematics was not available at College, so he did Physics instead. After three years and not very much work he was awarded a first class honours degree in Natural Science. 2
Stephen then went on to Cambridge to do research in Cosmology, there being no one working in that area in Oxford at the time. His supervisor was Dennis Sciama, although he had hoped to get Fred Hoyle who was working in Cambridge. After gaining his Ph. D, he became first a Research Fellow, and later on a Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. After leaving the Institute of Astronomy in 1973 Stephen came to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, and since 1979 has held the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. The chair was founded in 1663 with money left in the will of the Reverend Henry Lucas, who had been the Member of Parliament for the University.
