2024年高一英语阅读理解专题素质拓展主题2:Zeigarnik效应【核心阅读材料选材:浙江省杭州市高级中学20232024学年上学期期末考试高一英语】①No one likes interruption. We are born to seek balance and order. No matter what it is that you are doing, being interrupted involves a forceful stop midway and then having to reenter your former state, sometimes with great difficulty. Popular belief has it that interruption breaks the flow of your thinking and affects productivity negatively, and so it is advisable that you have an uninterrupted session of intensive work before your next break.②However, a Russian psychologist, Bluma Zeigarnik, might tell you otherwise. The connection between interruption and memory drew her attention when she was dining in a restaurant. She noticed how the waitresses had an amazing memory of the detailed orders yet to be paid for, but little memory of the orders that were already pleted.③Back in her laboratory, she conducted studies in which subjects were required to plete various puzzles. Some of the subjects were interrupted during the tasks. All the subjects were then asked to describe what tasks they had done. It turns out that adults remembered the interrupted tasks 90% better than the pleted tasks, and that children were even more likely to recall the unpleted tasks. To put it another way, unpleted tasks will stay on your mind until you finish them!④In parison to tasks that were already finished and ones that we haven’t even started, halfdone projects are highlighted in the mental todo list our brains draw up for us. Zeigarnik described this finding in the late 1920s, which was later called Zeigarnik effect. One possible explanation is that with interrupted tasks, we are longing for them to be pleted, in order to regain a sense of balance. Finishing them also means that we can finally clear up the mental backlog and give the space to more uping tasks.⑤Zeigarnik’s effect can be found everywhere, especially used in media and advertising. Have you ever wondered why cliffhangers work so well or why you just can’t get yourself to stop watching that series on Netflix? Ernest Hemingway once said about writing a novel, “It is the wait until the next day that is hard to get through.” So next time, when you are interrupted, appreciate it and take advantage of it to promote your productivity.【核心材料知识深挖】这篇文章探讨了干扰对人们思维和生产力的影响,以及Zeigarnik效应。

This will help your kids to learn to schedule their day and will give them a sense of control over how they spend their time.Allow them to study in blocks of time, such as for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle. 【小题2】 .Ideal (理想的)study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner.Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive activity. 【小题3】You’ll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see-—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then. The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times."My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives. From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.【小题1】How did the author get to know America?A.From her relatives.B.From her mother.C.From books and pictures.D.From radio programs.【小题2】Upon leaving for America the author felt_______.A.confusedB.excitedC.worriedD.amazed【小题3】For the first two years in New York, the author _________.A.often lost her wayB.did not think about her futureC.studied in three different schoolsD.got on well with her stepfather【小题4】What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?A. Up until now, I had been old enough to dress myself, but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher, had been through first snow days many times, but I think she may still remember this one.I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn’t fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots.” I didn’t reali ze at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected grown-ups to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.I announced, “They’re on the wrong feet.”She struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again.“They’re my brother’s boots, you know,” I said. “I hate them!”Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn’t an annoying little girl, She pushed and pushed, less gently this time. With a greater sigh, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, “Now, where are yourmittens(连指手套)?”I looked into her eyes and said, “I didn’t want to lose them, so I hid them in the toes of my boots.”【小题1】The little girl was more satisfied with her__________-.A.trousersB.jacketC.boots【小题2】Miss Finlayson had difficulty with the girl’s second boot mainly because_____.A.the girl got them from her brotherB.the girl put something in themC.they were on the wrong feetD.they did not fit the girl well【小题3】Why does the author say Miss Finlayson would remember that first snow day?A.Because the little girl was in her brother’s clothes.B.Because it was the most exciting day of the winter.C.Because the little girl played a trick on her.D.Because the little girl wore a pretty scarf.7._______ you’ve got a chance, you might as well make full use of it.A.Now thatB.AfterC.AlthoughD.As soon as8.---I wonder why he has been acting so strangely these days.---Recent pressure at work may ______ his behavior.A.account forB.make forC.change forD.stand for9.短文改错(每小题1分,满分10分)文章共有10处语言错误,要求你在错误的地方增加、删除或修改某个单词。

AInterviewer:Good evening, and welcome to Between the Pages. This evening,I’ll be talking to Dr.Richard Fairhurst, whose new book The New Age of Invention has just been published. Welcome,Richard!Richard:Thank you. It’s a pleasure to be here.Interviewer:I guess you have been asked about the title of your book before. It suggests that the present day is a new age for inventions, but many people might think that the great age of invention is over.Richard:Well, that’s an interesting point. There have been golden ages of invention throughout history.Think of the four great inventions in Ancient China:gunpowder, papermaking, printing and the compass. These things changed the world forever. Then there were the great Western inventions: the steam engine, the telephone and the radio. And now,we find ourselves in the great new age of technology.Interviewer:So are most of the new great inventions tech-based?Richard:A lot, yes. For example, advances in virtual reality and wearable tech,as well as the flexible battery, mean we should soon be seeing further developments. In addition, important advances have been made in medicine and environmental science thanks to increasing computer power.Interviewer:Can you give us some examples?Richard:Sure.New inventions like3D printers have been used to make replacement hearts and bone parts. In terms of the environment,it is now possible to create an intelligent walking house. It is capable of using GPS technology to travel to different places, with computing technology controlling its“legs”.What's more, huge advances in solar technology mean it can be eco-friendly, too.Interviewer:Impressive stuff!I’ve also been told that you’re an inventor yourself. Is that correct?Richard:Yes,I am,but I’m only one member of a big team—most inventors now work as part of big international teams.Interviewer:I see.So what is it that inspires us to invent things?Richard:Most inventions start with recognising a problem that needs a solution. This was no doubt the reason behind the invention of the wheel in ancient times, which much later developed into the car.!Now,reduced energy supplies and environmental pollution have led to more advancesin the technology of new energy vehicles. But what remains important is that we have an incredible desire to think and create, and that’s the real spirit of invention.Interviewer:One last question. This is the one everyone really wants to know:will anybody ever invent a time machine?Richard:I think you’ve been watching too many movies!Nothing like this has been invented yet and I’d say we’re a long way from an invention like that at the moment! But,as they say,“Never say never!”1.What do we know about Dr.Richard Fairhurst?A.He is an interviewer of a TV programme.B.He is the director of Between the Pages.C.He is a doctor from the local hospital.D.He is the author of The New Age of Invention.2.Richard introduces the four great inventions in Ancient China in order to show.A.their advantages over the inventions in the WestB.his broad knowledge in the field of science in the pastC.the existence of the golden ages of invention in historyD.their uselessness for the development of the society now3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Most inventors prefer working by themselves present.B.The desire to solve problems inspires A.What is standard English? Is it spoken in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand? Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. Many people believe the English spoken on TV and the radio is standard English. This is because in the early days of radio, those who reported the news were expected to speak excellent English. However, even on TV and the radio you will hear differences in the way people speak. When people use words and expressions different form “standard language”, it is called a dialect. American English has many dialects, especially the Midwestern, southern, African American has many dialects. Even in some parts of the US, two people from neighboring towns speak a little differently. American English has so many dialects because people have come from all over the world.Geography also plays a part in making dialects. Some people who live in the mountains of the eastern US speak with an older kind of English dialect. When Americans moved from one place to another, they took their dialects with them. So people from the mountains in the southeastern US speak with almost the same dialect as people in the northwestern US. The US is a large country in which many different dialects are spoken. Ever since middle school, my sister Wang Wei and I have dreamed about taking a great bike trip. Two years ago she bought an expensive mountain bike and then she persuaded me to buy one. Last year, she visited our cousins, Dao Wei and Yu Hang at their college in Kunming. They are Dai and grew up in western Yunnan Province near the Lancang River, the Chinese part of the river that is called the Mekong River in other countries. Wang Wei soon got them interested in cycling too. After graduating from college, we finally got the chance to take a bike trip. I asked my sister, “Where are we going?” It was my sister who first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River from where it begins to where it ends. Now she is planning our schedule for the trip.I am fond of my sister but she has one serious shortcoming. She can be really stubborn. Althoughshe didn’t know the best way of getting to places, she insisted that she organize the trip properly. Now I know that the proper way is always her way. I kept asking her, “When are we leaving and when are we coming back?” I asked her whether she had looked at a map yet. Of course she hadn’t; my sister doesn’t care about details. So I told her that the source of the Mekong is in Qinghai Province. She gave me a determined look -- the kind that said she would not change her mind. When I told her that our journey would begin at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters, she seemed to be excited about it. When I told her the air would be hard to breathe and it would be very cold, she said it would be an interesting experience. I know my sister well. Once she has made up her mind, nothing can change it. Finally, I had to give in.Several months before our trip, Wang Wei and I went to the library. We found a large atlas with good maps that showed details of world geography. From the atlas we could see that the Mekong River begins in a glacier to move quickly. It becomes rapids as it passes through deep valleys, traveling across western Yunnan Province. Sometimes the river becomes a water fall and enters wide valleys. We were both surprised to learn that half of the river is in China. After it leaves China and high altitude, the Mekong becomes wide, brown and warm. As it enters Southeast Asia, its pace slows. It makes wide bends or meanders through low valleys to the plains where rice grows. At last, the river delta enters the South China Sea.6. The text mainly tells us that the author and his sister___________.A. plan and make preparations for their bike tripB. take a bike trip along the Mekong RiverC. do some research on the Mekong RiverD. are fond of cycling and travelling7. What can we learn from the text?A. They would need others' help during their trip.B. They knew well about the Mekong River before.C. They gave up their trip because they would meet with many difficulties on the way.D. Their trip would be very difficult because there would be many difficulties on the way.8. Why did Wang Kun keep asking Wang Wei questions?A. Because he wanted to give her as much help as he could.B. Because he wanted to persuade her to give up the trip.C. Because he knew very well about the Mekong River.D. Because he wanted to organize the trip himself.9. The spelling of English has always been a problem but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. Then people could spell words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn’t made until the time of the late Qing Dynasty. Three men did most of the important early work on dictionaries: Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray. These men spent nearly all of their lives trying to collect words for their dictionaries. For them, it wasn’t only a job; it was a wonderful journey of discovery. The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.Murray had never been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metreunderground. In winter it felt like a barn, he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o’clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening. Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, including his two daughters. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It included more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the reading?A.
