The curious child reached up to grab the wire of a hot kettle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her tiny infant frame. Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie horribly burnt, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, using tissue(组织) taken from unburned areas of Ammie’s body, doctors performed complex skin transplants(移植) to close her wounds and control her injuries, an operation thattook about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent 12 more operations to repair her body. When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age 4, other pupils made cruel comments or simply wouldn’t play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she recalled, “some children refused to become friends because of that.”Today, aged 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further skin transplants. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers inspiration and hope to other young burns victims. She is a member of the Scottish Bu rned Children’s Club, a charity set up last year. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridge shire for the charity’s first summer camp. “I’ll show them how to get rid of unkind stares from others.” she says. Ammie loves wearing fashionable sleeveless tops, and she plans to show the youngsters at the summer camp that they can too. “I do not go to great lengths to hide my burns scars,” she says, “I gave up wondering how other people would react years ago.”25. Ammie will teach the younger children at the Graffham Water Center to___________. A.face others’ unkindness bravely B.hide their scars by proper dressingC.live a normal life D.recover quickly27. What can be the best title of the passage?A.A Seriously Burned Girl Survives B.Ways to Get Rid of Unkind Stares C.Permanent Scars and Pain for a Girl D.A Seriously Burned Angel of HopeCLove to sink into your chairs and relax when you get to school? Then you willnot be happy to hear that schools all over the world are seriously considering exchanging traditional desks for ones with no seats at all — Yes, that means you will be encouraged to stand through those already too long math and science lessons! Why would anyone even think of putting kids to such cruelty? Experts say it improves their health and helps fight obesity. While that may seem a little far-fetched (牵强的) the officials at the few schools around the world seem to agree.Among them are educators from the College Station Independent School District in Texas, who recently completed a week-long experiment involving 480 students across three elementary schools. The 374 kids that agreed to participate in the study were provided a device that helped record step count and calorie consumption over the entire period. All 25 teachers involved in the study reported that students appeared to be more alert and concentrate better, when allowed to stand. The one thing that did surprise the researchers was that younger kids were more willing to stay standing than kids in higher grades. They believe this may have something to do with the fact that after years of being asked to “sit still”, older kids have a harder time adjusting to this unexpected freedom.American schools are not the only ones reporting success with stand-up desks. Four Catholic schools in Perth, Australia, which have been testing them since October 2013, have seen similar results. In May 2014, Grove House Primary School in Bradford, West Yorkshire, became Europe’s first test one, with a seven-week trial that involved the use of desks made by Ergotron in their fifth-grade classrooms. While official results are not out yet, early reactions from both teachers and students, have been extremely encouraging. The findings of these studies and others done previously, all seem to mean that allowing kids to move around in classrooms is a win-win for students and teachers —it helps kids get healthier and provides educators with a more engaged audience.28. According to the first paragraph, what may make the students at school unhappyis that _____.A. they have to exchange desks with each otherB. they have to exchange traditional desks for chairs with no seatsC. there are no seats for them to sit in classD. the officials show no sympathy to them at all29. What is most likely to be the result of the seven-week trial?A. The standing desks can’t be used at all.B. It is good for students to use stand-up desks.C. More tests should be done in other schools.D. The students are different in personality.31. Why do the teachers like the standing desks?A. Because the educators can draw the students’ attention.B. Because the standing desks can keep the students concentrated.DA ban on smoking in public places has come into force in China – home to a third of the world’s smokers. The move is aimed at controlling the number of deaths from smoking-related diseases, running at a million a year. But the rules have been criticized, because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore them. Many business owners hate rules that force them to ban smoking on their premises (经营场所) because many customers do not like the rules and complain. The rules do not allow smoking in places like restaurants, hotels, railway stations or theatres, but not at the office.Employers have a duty to warn staff off the dangers of smoking but do not have to forbid them from lighting up at their desks.Shanghai introduced similar rules a year ago, but people do not seem to take much notice of them. Often you find people smoking at the next table while you are eating your meal or having a drink in a bar. The problem is that the rules do not include punishments for businesses or individuals who ignore them.It appears that many Chinese people are unaware of the dangers of smoking. Research suggests that only one in four knows the harm cigarettes of second-hand smoke can cause.Officials say they have to try to persuade people not to smoke to reduce the numbers dying from smoking-related diseases. At the same time the government makes a lot of money from the sales of cigarettes by the state-owned firm that makes and sells all tobacco products throughout the country.32. The number of smokers in China makes up about ______ of the world’s smokers.A. 66%B. 44%C. 33%D. 55%33. We can replace the underlined part in the passage with _______.A. are concerned aboutB. are curious aboutC. don’t knowD. don’t care34. Why have the rules been criticized by some people?A. Because those people don’t want to be punished.B. Because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore therules.C. Because the rules are ignored by all the people who smoke.D. Because nobody takes notice of the rules.35. If the government wants to ban smoking in public places, ______.A. only rely on educating peopleB. make more money from the sales of cigarettesC. do punish those who ignore the rulesD. let people know more about the dangers of smoking第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Researchers say bedtime rules may improve a child's development.A new study found better results in fouryearolds who go to bed around the same time every night and sleep at least eleven hours.Getting less than that led to lower abilities in language, reading and early math skills. Researchers studied about eight thousand children whose parents took part in the research on early childhood. The parents answered questions by telephone at nine months and again at four years. Researcher Erika Gaylor asked parents to follow routines (惯例) like reading books or telling stories to their children.Children who go to bed after nine o'clock took longer to fall asleep and slept less.Children also got less sleep if they did not have bedtime routines. A separate study found that more sleep may even make a person run faster. The study was small — seven players in the Stanford University football team. For the study, they aimed for (争取) at least ten hours of sleep each night during the season. After seven to eight weeks of more sleep, the players ran faster in short training races. They also felt less sleepy during the day. Stanford sleep researcher Cheri Mah says sleep should be part of a player's training program. This is some of her advice: Adults should try to get seven to eight hours of
