There is an old joke about quitting smoking. “Quitting is easy. I did it several times!” There is, in reality, some truth to it. Statistics show that most smokers quit several times before they quit forever. Don’t give up, and keep trying!
I too, tried to quit several times. Every smoker knows the health risks of smoking, but we still do it. I smoked for about two dozen years, a pack a day. From my previous quitting attempts, I guess I got things “immunized (免疫的)” to those. I held on. I kept some things in my mouth and hands when I got restless. Gum, pens, guitar, whatever. When things got really bad, I used to run into a movie theater and watch movies. Luckily, I am a movie fan. Watching movies took my mind off cigarettes for a while. I used to go to any public place where cigarettes are banned. I kept a few cigarette substitutes (代替者) for some weak moments. This is what worked for me. Distraction! I used to distract myself with something else, anything that would take my mind off smoking.
It has been almost a year since I quit. Now, I have found another job. My cough has improved a lot and I can breathe better. I am healthier, look younger, and seem more energetic. I don’t think I can go back to smoking ever. Strangely enough, the smell of smoke makes me sick now. Strange, but true!
My message is —you can quit smoking. Do not give up if you have failed a few times. Distract yourself. It will work. The longer you smoke, obviously, the harder it will be to quit. But you can make it. I did it. So can you.

Charles Blackman is famous for his beautiful painting of dreams. In 1956, he heard for the first time Lewis Carroll’s extraordinary tale of Alice in Wonderland—the story of a Victorian girl who falls down a rabbit hole, meets a lot of funny characters and experiences all kinds of things. At that time, Blackman’s wife was suffering f rom progressive blindness. The story of Alice moving through the strange situations, often disheartened by various events, was similar to his wife’s experiences. It also reflected so much of his own life. All this contributed to the completion of the Alice in Wonderland paintings.

Almost everyone label me an optimist(乐天派).But even optimists can temporarily lose hope. This was the case for me on a particular cold and gloomy January day. I felt overwhelmed by the painful challenge I was dealing with in my personal life. Marriage, health, and financial struggles had joined forces to create a tornado of emotion that threatened to crush my spirit. I felt angry. About midway through the day, I left work to get some lunch. Still feeling negative, I noticed that the sun had come out for a brief moment. I began to think about my negative attitude and reminded myself that I was responsible for choosing my state of mind. While I could not ignore the pain I was going through, I could choose to dwell on（老想着）the negative or I could choose to shift my thinking to a more positive focus. Even as I consciously reminded myself of this truth,
I felt incapable of making the shift.

HANGZHOU, April 4 (Xinhua) —Another H7N9 bird flu case has been confirmed in east China's Zhejiang Province, the provincial health department said Thursday, bringing the country's total number of cases to 10.
The patient is a 64-year-old man from Huzhou City. He became ill on March 29 and was admitted to a hospital in Huzhou on March 31.
On Thursday, medical experts confirmed that he was infected with the H7N9 bird flu strain after the provincial center for disease control and prevention said late Wednesday that he tested positive for the virus.
An investigation has found that all 55 people who had close contact with the man have not showed any abnormal clinical symptoms, the department said.
So far, China has confirmed 10 H7N9 cases —four in Jiangsu Province, two in Shanghai Municipality, one in Anhui Province and three in Zhejiang. The two patients in Shanghai and one in Zhejiang have died.
Health authorities and hospitals in many Chinese provinces have been on high alert for H7N9 cases.
In Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province, which neighbors Zhejiang, five hospitals have been selected and ordered to be ready to treat H7N9 patients, though no cases have been reported there. China's health authorities have promised transparency(透明) and cooperation to the World Health Organization (WHO) in regards to human infections of the new strain of bird flu.
