Not a dollhouse, but a livable space with bed, kitchen, storage-everything you’d need to live. Why did I decide to build a house? I hoped it would give me skills that really matter in life, such as using tools for construction. And in building the house, I would understand how much labor goes into a home and trulyappreciate what I am living in.But this past year, life gave me a heavy hit: My father, one of my best friends and my tiny house construction partner, died in a traffic accident. This is where my enthusiasm conics from now: the desire to finish my house for my father. Because of this decision, I now have some life experiences that some adults don’t have. I can relate not only to people who want to build a house, but also to people who have lost a parent. And to all of them, I can say that giving up is not a choice.Still, without the help of my friends and family. I would probably stop my project. My friend Luke came to help the week after my father died; he knew I needed to get my walls up. The guidance from fellow tiny house builders and their families has been helpful. Putting windows in is no easy. And installing electricity is not something you do in your dreams. Ten hours of stabbing your fingers with metal string and getting shocked a couple times is not ideal.Sometimes when people get a hard knock, they stay down. I didn’t. I didn’t only want to show that anyone can build their own house; I also wanted to show that when I was handed lemons. I not only made lemonade. I made a delicious lemon cake.(1)One reason why the author decided to build a house was to .A . save some moneyB . learn some life skillsC . realize her father’s dreamD . improve her living conditions(2)After her father’s death, the author .A . lives on her ownB . decided to give up her planC . still looks at lifepositivelyD . has helped many needy families(3)When doing her construction work, the author .A . got a lot of help from other peopleB . decided to lower her expectationsC . had to leave things unfinishedD . found it less challenging (4)The underlined part “gel a hard knock” in the last paragraph probably means .A . get knocked downB . do a challenging taskC . experience something newD . have an unpleasant experience3. 阅读理解Sound travels very well through water-much better, in fact, than it does through air. So it shouldn’t be surprising that many ocean animals make noise. They use sound to communicate and hunt. As biologist Brandon Southall says, “Their whole world is related to sound.”Dolphins whistle, organizing hunts. Lovesick whales sing so loudly they can be heard hundreds of miles away. But these days they aren’t the only ones sounding off. They have more and more competition from human machines.Every day, thousands of huge containe r ships sail across the world’s oceans. On top of the engine noise, the ships’ propeller make a loud noise all the time. All that can make it hard for ocean animals trying to listen out for friends, or dinner. Animals swimming nearby a ship can be deafened or even killed.Underwater construction can also be dangerously loud. Whenconstruction machines called pile drivers were used during repairs to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, dead fish appeared.Geologist pound on the seafloor too, trying to find oil wells and map Earth’s surface. The results are useful lo science, but all that hammering probably gives ocean animal a headache. As people realize how important sound is to ocean animals, they are looking for ways to reduce human noise. Ships could get quieter just by slowing down. Engineers are also trying to find quieter propeller ships. Now some companies are using a simple invention called a bubble curtain, which makes sound waves passing through it lose energy and gel quieter. It seems to work - when bubble curtains were fixed on the San Francisco bridge project fish deaths dropped. We still have a lot to learn about sound in the oceans, but together we can help keep the sea a quieter place.(1)Dolphins and whales arc mentioned to show .A . sound travels very well through waterB . they are surprisingly noisy in the seaC . the ocean is filled with soundD . ocean noise is a big problem (2)What is happening to ocean animals these days?A . Human noise is causing danger to their safety.B . There is less food in the ocean for them.C . They are being killed in large numbers.D . They are losing their hearing.(3)During the first repair to the bridge, some fish .A . started to dieB . were attracted to itC . got quiet underwaterD . sufferedfrom headaches(4)Bubble curtains are used to .A . research on fishes underwaterB . build the San Francisco bridgeC . stop noisy machines workingD . reduce construction noise4. 阅读理解The vast majority of people can buy pretty much anything they need. Not anything they want, necessarily, but anything they need to achieve a satisfactory degree of creature comfort: clothing, water, shoes and food.During my childhood, a Michael Pollan book would have been the prize of my year, were I to find it waiting under my Christmas tree or open it upon my birthday. I also used to be thrilled at receiving necessary things, like simple socks or gloves, as present. Nowadays I have too many gloves. I purchase leather gloves online that appear to be a good deal or just because I like their look.Prosperity is a good thing, right? Yes, of course. But for me, I find that the greater ease with which such a generous gift is purchased, the less significance it has when given. This is why I try harder at gifts. My first line of dealing with this problem is simply understanding the effect of a little time spent. Even writing out a thoughtful or funny card goes a lot further than a “cute top” purchased from a popular shopping website.Need help? Go to your printer. There’s paper in there. Fold one sheet in half and draw a heart on the front. Open it up and fill the card with a poem or a few words of your own. Not only is it obvious that you took the time to selectyour words and write them down, but now you force the reader to stop for a short time and consider what you were trying to accomplish with them. The effort made by the two of you is the gift.No matter how you decide to spend a little more time on your giving, the point is just quite simply that you do. You don’t have to give a pe rson a handmade paper boat to get a reaction. But you won’t be sorry if you do.(1)What does the author think of his childhood gifts?A . They weren’t what he wanted.B . They weren’t easy to get.C . They looked good.D . They were useful.(2)What does the u nderlined part “this problem” in paragraph 4 refer to?A . How to make a good deal.B . How to choose a popular gift.C . How little a bought gift matters.D . I low long the time spent on gifts is.(3)A handmade card appears to be more significant because .A . certain information is deliveredB . it provides a sense of achievement.C . it takes the giver some time to finish it.D . both the giver and the receiver are making an effort.(4)The author writes the text mainly to .A . encourage readers to make giftsB . advise readers to buy helpful giftsC . inform readers of the importance of givingD . persuade readers to make reasonable purchase二、完形填空5. 完形填空More and more people around the world are taking a look at urban farming. The good side was watered by rivers and was filled with trees and abundant food, while on the wrong side there was hardly any water or plants, and wild beasts crowded together. The Mokoko had the misfortune of having always lived there, with no way to cross to the other side. Their life was hard and they lived in permanent terror of the beasts.Along the edge of the cliff separating the two sides, a skinny but strong tree grew, with which they could build two poles. There was no doubt that the tribe would choose the great chief and doctor to use the poles. But when the two of them were given their chance to make the jump, they didn’t dare to. They thought that the pole could break or it would not be long enough. They put so much energy into these thoughts that they gave in.But into that tribe were born Nam and Ariki, a pair of young hearts. One day, they decided to take up the poles. Nobody stopped them, but everyone did try to discourage them, trying to present how dangerous the jumping was, using a thousand explanations.“And what if what they say is true?” wondered the young Naru.“Don’t worry. I am a bit scared too, but it doesn’t look so difficult,”replied Ariki, ever determined.“But if it goes wrong, it will be a terrible end,” continued Naru, undecided.“Perhaps the jump will go badly. But staying forever on this side of the island surely won’t work out well either.”“You’re right. Let’s do it tomorrow.”And on the next day, Naru and Ariki jumped to the good side of the island. When taking up the poles, while feeling their desire, the fear hardly allowed them to breathe. And while flying through the air, helpless and without support, they felt that something must have gone wrong and death awaited them. But when they landed on the other side, they thought the jump really hadn’t been so bad after all.24. What situation were the Mokoko faced with?A. Moving.DTwo heads are better than one. It means that two people working together have a better chance of solving a problem than one person alone. But not everyone likes working in a group. There can be a number of reasons why people dislike group work. Some may feel nervous or uneasy in group situations. Others might have had a bad experience with individuals who did not work well as a team. Another comment is that teachers or instructors fail to provide roles for group members. This may create a situation where everyone or no one wants to lead. Whatever the issue, the result is the same: the group does not realize its goal.Cooperative (合作的) learning is an educational method that can help to solve this problem. There are many methods of cooperative learning. Today we will talk about one: giving each person in a small group a specific duty to reach a shared goal. For example, if learners are divided into groups of four people each, their roles might be: leader, writer, checker and speaker. This structure helps ensure that everyone takes part equally in group work and allows each member to play a meaningful part in completing the shared goal. Before dividing learners into groups, it is a good idea for the teacher o r club’s instructor to first have knowledge about the language skill levels of participants. The goal is to make each group a mixture of higher- and lower-level language learners. Putting too many people with similar skill levels together could make the work too difficult or easy. Role cards can be a helpful tool in this method of cooperative learning. Their purpose is to remind learners of each person’s role. Before the cooperative activity, the role of the teacher or activity instructor is to explain two things to the group: the main job for the activity and how the cooperative roles work. The personin charge may appoint these roles or let the English learners choose them. Then, during the activity, the instructor’s job is to watch the groups and provide more guidance when needed. After the activity, the instructor may wish to provide feedback to groups on their work and their use of cooperation. With this cooperative learning method, you can say that four heads are better than just one.32. What’s the out come if people do not enjoy group work?A. The aim of the group can not be achieved.B. Specific roles will be given to group members.C. Group members will feel at ease in groups.D. Group members will fail to work individually.33. Why does the teacher need to know about those who take part in the activity?A. To find out language learners with similar levels.B. To clarify higher- and lower-level language learners.C. To combine learners with different language levels.D. To increase the difficulty in finishing the work.34. Which of the following is TRUE about the role of instructors?A. To offer group members timely help at each step.B. To listen to the response from group members.C. To help the English learners choose their favourite roles.D. To make clear about the task and working principles of the roles.35. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. Two Heads Are Better than One.B. Cooperation Is a Must in Learning.C. Group Work Makes a Great Difference to Learners’ Achievement.D. The online school no w provides more than 580 million online lessons in over 36 la nguages. Last fall, Khan created a physical school in Californi a.The Khan Lab School runs differently from traditional schools. There’s no homework or grades, and students — ranging fro m ages five to 12 — share the same classroom. “It’s only 150 years that we separated children by age in classrooms,” said Khan. “The idea is that you can learn a lot from the students who are a little older than you and if you’re 12 years old you c ould exercise a lot of leadership being a teacher assistant for t he younger students.”The school also breaks up the students based on their “independence level,” rather than their age. “Whatever independenc e level you’re on — whether in math, reading or writing — you ’re on your own track,” he explained.Another unique feature of the school is that it runs all day, all-year long. Khan said the problem with the current school sche dule is that they do not have enough learning time. “The gap between the U.S. and Shanghai test scores can be explained by time in the classroom,” Khan said. “You have the summer l earning loss, which is not only time that you’re not learning wh en you could be, but also you’re forgetting the things that you learned at the end of last year.”Now Khan Lab School enters its second year. Researchers in the United States studied 100,00 0 women during an eight-year period, beginning in 1994. All of the women were fifty or older. The study was part of the Women’s Health Initiative org anized by the National Institutes of Health. The women were asked questions measuring their beliefs or i deas about the future. The hopeful w omen were also 30% less likely to have died from heart disea se after the eight years.Hilary Tindle from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania was the lead author of the report. She said the study confirm ed earlier research that linked optimistic feelings to longer life. The researchers also gathered information about people’s education, financial earnings, physical activity and use of alcohol or cigarettes. Independent of those things, the findings still showed that optimists had less of a chance of dying during th e eight-year period. Some women who answered the questions were found to be hostile (怀敌意的), or highly untrusting of others. These women were 16% m ore likely to die than the others. They also were 23% more lik ely to die of cancer. The study also found women who were not optimistic were m ore likely to smoke and have high blood pressure or diabetes. They were also more likely not to exercise.Tindle says the study did not confirm whether optimism leads to healthier choices, or if it actually affects a person’s physical health. She also says the study does not prove that negative emotions or distrust lead to bad health effects and shorter life. Yet there does appear to be a link that calls for more research.13. But staying forever on this side of the island surely won’t work out wel l either.”“You’re right. Before dividing learners into groups, it is a good idea for the teacher or club’s instructor to first have knowledge about the language skill levels of participants. What’s the outcome if people do not enjoy group work?A. Cooperative Learning Contributes to the Success of Group Work.第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Some students attend charter schools(特许学校).Charter schools are self-governing. Certain companies operate (经营) some charter schools. They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools. They receive tax money just as other public schools do. Charter schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning. These governments provide the schools with the agreement called a charter that permits them to operate.Charter schools are different because they do not have to obey most laws that govern traditional public schools. Each school can choose its own goals and decide what to teach and how to teach them in their own way. Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools. The government strongly supports charter schools as a way to reorganize public schools, which are failing to educate students. But some education unions are against charter schools. One teachers' union has just released the results of the first national study, which compared the progress of students in both traditional schools and charter schools. The results of the study show that charter school students performed worse on math and reading tests than the students in traditional public schools. Some experts say the study is not fair because students in charter schools have more problems than students in traditional schools. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.Sports 1:Basketball.We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.Sports 2:GymWe will be using St.Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing their park . First , it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst.Three activities, skipping , jogging , outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.Sports 3: HikingHiking(远足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr.Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.Sports 4:SwimmingThe Kowloon City Aqueatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside . We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour(i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity . The pool will have two lifuguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.1.It can be inferred from the passage that __________.A.students taking part in basket ball will walk to the courts.B.every student can gain admission to one of the four sportsC.hiking students can have a regular rest in the shade of treesD.students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water2.It can be concluded that __________.A.each sport will take only on hourB.students will be charged for the four sportsC.all the sports will take place at Kowloon PeakD.teachers will accompany students on each sport3.The purpose of the memo is to __________.A.attract students’ interest in the programmeB.require the parents to select a sport for their childC.help the staff explain the programme to the parentsD.remind teachers and lifeguards to be present on timeBTim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for over 30 years near Buffalo, New York--he in computers, she in special education. "Teaching means everything to us," Tim would say. In April 1998, he learned he would need a heart operation. It was the kind of news that leads to some serious thinking about life's purpose. Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure describing Imagination Library, a program started by Dolly Parton' s foundation (基金会) that mailed a book every month to children from birth to age five in the singer's home town of Sevier, Tennessee. "I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire," Tim recalls. He placed the brochure on his desk, "as a reminder."Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still on the desk, Tim clicked on imagination library .com. The program had been opened up to partners who could take advantage of book and postage discounts. The quality of the books was of great concern to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they went to Dollywood for a look-see. "We didn't want to give the children rubbish," says Linda. The books-reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists and Dollywood board members-included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats's The Snowy Day and newer books like Anna Dewdney's Llama Llama series.Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and got to work. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: "This program introduces us to books I've never heard of ."The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. "Some people sit there and wait to die," says Tim. "Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left."4. What led Tim to think seriously about the meaning of life?A. His health problemB. His love for teachingC. The influence of his wifeD. The news from the Web5. What did Tim want to do after learning about Imagination Library?A. Give out brochures.B. Do something similar.C. Write books for childrenD. Retire from being a teacher.6. according to the text, Dollly Parton is _________.A. a well-known surgeonB. a mother of a four-year-oldC. a singer born in TennesseeD.a computer programmer7. What can we learn from Tim's words in the last paragraph?A. He needs more money to help the children.B. He wonders why some people are so busy.C. He tries to save those waiting to die.D. He considers his efforts worthwhile.CDiana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year-old twin sons: a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart."I have two kids in college, and I want to say 'come home,' but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education," says Jacobs. The Jacobs family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid from the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school. With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around. At the same time, tuition(学费)continues to rise. A report from the NationalCenter for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982 to 2007, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade."If we go on this way for another 25years, we won't have an affordable system of higher education," says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. "The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt."Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.8. How did the Jacobs manage to solve their problem?A. They asked their kids to come home.B. They borrowed $20,000 from the school.C. They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.D. They got help from the school and the federal government.9. Financial aid administrators believe that _________.A. more families will face the same problem as the JacobsesB. the government will receive more letters of complaintC. college tuition fees will double soonD. America's unemployment will fall10. What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?A. They blamed the government for the tuition increase.B. Their income remained steady in the last decade.C. They will try their best to send kids to college.D. Their debts will be paid off within 25 years.11. According to the last paragraph, the government will_________.A. provide most students with scholarshipsB. dismiss some financial aid administratorsC. stop the companies from making student loansD. go on providing financial support for college studentsDStudents and Technology in the ClassroomI love my Blackberry—it's my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备) and truly communicate with others. On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule—no laptops, iPads, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy. Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There's no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students. The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I'm sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.12. Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with __________.A. the course materialB. others' misuse of technologyC. discussion topicsD. the author's class regulations13. The underlined word "engage"in Para.4 probably means __________.A. exploreB. acceptC. changeD. reject14. according to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may __________.A. keep students from doing independent thinkingB. encourage students to have in-depth conversationsC. help students to better understand complex themesD. affect students' concentration on course evaluation15. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author _________.A. is quite stubbornB. will give up teaching historyC. will change his teaching plan soonD. values technology-free dialogues in his class II.七选五(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)MuzakThe next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? 16 It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak". About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak" everyday. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. ____72 ______If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? 18 Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak doeswhat it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. 19 Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.20 . They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. B Beneath the tranquil settings of Yellowstone National Park in the US lies an enormous magma chamber (熔岩腔膛) . It’s responsible for the geysers (间歇泉) and hot springs that define the area, but for scientists at Nasa, it’s also one of the greatest natural threats to human civilization as we know: a potential supervolcano. When Nasa scientists came to consider the problem, they conceived a plan to drill up to 10km down into the supervolcano, and pump down water at high pressure. The circulating water would return at a temperature of around 350C (662F), thus slowly day by day extracting (提取) heat from the volcano. But drilling into a supervolcano does not come without certain risks, namely triggering the eruption you’re intending to prevent. Therefore, the idea is to drill in from the supervolcano from the lower sides, starting outside the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park, and extracting the heat from the underside of the magma chamber. “This way you’re preventing the heat coming up from below from ever reaching the top of the chamber which is where the real threat arises,” Wilcox says. Such a plan could be potentially applied to every active supervolcano on the planet, and Nasa’s scientists are hoping that their blueprints will encourage more practical scientific discussion and debate for tackling the threat. “When people first considered the idea of defending the Earth from an asteroid (小行星)impact, they reacted in a similar way to the supervolcano threat,” Wilcox says. “People thought, ‘As puny (微不足道的) as we are, how can humans possibly prevent an asteroid from hitting the Earth.’ Well, it turns out if you engineer something which pushes very slightly for a very long time, you can make the asteroid miss the Earth. So the problem turns out to be easier than people think. In both cases it requires the scientific community to invest brain power and you have to start early. But Yellowstone explodes roughly every 600,000 years, and it is about 600,000 years since it last exploded, which should cause us to sit up and take notice.” 24. Which of the following words is closest in meaning to the underlined word “conceived”? A. approve B. oppose C. form D. stop 25. According to Nasa’s plan, _______________. A. Water pumped down at high pressure would return hot. B. Heat can be completely extracted from the volcano soon. C. Drilling into a supervolcano is by no means risky. D. Heat from below is expected to reach the top of the chamber.
