Hurricanes are like super massive storms with crazy heavy rainand winds that can knock stuff over and cause flooding. Tornadoes are skinny but strong winds that spin around really fast in a funnel shape. And wildfires are out of control fires that spread quickly through dry woods and fields.Then Dr. Williams talked about man-made disasters, which are caused by humans instead of nature. Some examples are house fires, car accidents, chemical spills, and terrorism. We learned that house fires are one of the most common disasters and can be really dangerous and spread fast. Chemical spills happen when poisonous liquids or gases get loose and can make people sick. And terrorism is when people do violent attacks to hurt others on purpose, which is just awful.After teaching us about the different disasters, Dr. Williams showed us lots of pictures and videos of what they look like and the damage they can cause. It was crazy to see buildings crumbled from earthquakes, whole neighborhoods flooded from hurricanes, and houses and forests burned down from wildfires. The videos of tornadoes sucking up everything in their path were really wild too! Those disasters are no joke.The scariest part was learning about what to do if one of those disasters strikes where you live. Dr. Williams taught us steps to get prepared, like making an emergency pack with food,water, medicines, and supplies. Also having an emergency plan and meeting spot for your family. And knowing the evacuation routes to get out quickly.If there is an earthquake, we should drop down on the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops. Never go outside during an earthquake unless you absolutely have to because stuff could be falling. For tornadoes, get to the lowest level of the building away from windows, like a basement if you have one. For fires, get outside right away and never hide from firefighters. Dr. Williams stressed that following instructions from emergency workers is super important.She also talked about the brave people who respond to these disasters, like firefighters, police officers, ambulance crews, and search and rescue teams. We learned about their special training and equipment to fight fires, provide medical care, search for survivors, and secure dangerous areas. They have tough jobs but help save so many lives!After a disaster happens, there is a lot of damage and people are left without homes, food, or other supplies they need. She said it was going to be about something super important that we all need to know - disaster preparedness and response! I didn't know much about that, but it sounded exciting.On Monday, a firefighter named Captain Michael came to our classroom. He towered over us in his firefighter uniform and hat. He had a kind smile though, and said we could just call him Mike."Hey kids!" he started. "Has anyone here ever experienced an emergency like a fire, earthquake, hurricane, or other disaster?" A bunch of hands shot up around the room."It can be really scary, can't it?" Mike said. "But don't worry, that's why I'm here today - to teach you all about how to prepare for emergencies and what to do if one ever happens."First, Mike talked about different types of disasters that can happen depending on where you live. He said in our area, the biggest risks are earthquakes, fires, and severe storms. He showed us pictures on his computer of damage from past disasters. There were crumbled buildings, flooded streets, and raging wildfires. It looked really frightening!But Mike assured us that we shouldn't be too afraid, because there are lots of things families can do to get ready just in case. He said the most important thing is to make an emergency plan and put together a disaster supply kit.For the emergency plan, Mike said every family should pick a safe meeting place to go to outside their home, and another place across town to meet up if you can't go home. He also said we need to learn emergency phone numbers and have anout-of-state contact person to call to check in. I got to practice calling 9-1-1 and my grandma's number, since she lives far away.The supply kit is a portable bin or backpack that you pack with essential supplies to take with you if you have to evacuate quickly. Mike showed us examples of things to include like:Food and water for at least 3 daysFlashlight and batteriesFirst aid kitBattery-powered radioPersonal supplies like medication, spare glasses, diapers, etc.Extra cashComfort items like toys or booksMike said we should practice grabbing our kit and evacuating from our home twice a year. He also recommended having supplies in our car and using kid-safe storage spots like under beds or in closets.After learning how to get prepared, Mike taught us what to do during different emergencies. For earthquakes, he showed us the drop, cover, and hold on drill - getting under a sturdy desk or table and holding on until shaking stops. For fires, he said to get outside quickly and call 9-1-1 from a safe spot. And for severe storms, he said to go to an underground shelter or interior room without windows.The most exciting part was when Mike let us try on part of his firefighter gear! We put on the heavy yellow jacket, boots, and helmets. I felt so strong and brave wearing it. Mike said firefighters' special equipment protects them so they can rescue people and put out fires. Their gear looked really cool up close.At the end, Mike said the most important things are to stay calm, listen to emergency officials, and never be afraid to ask for help. He reminded us that first responders like firefighters, police, and paramedics are always ready to come to the rescue.I had so much fun at Mike's disaster lecture.
